Description: recording made on a spring afternoon among the green Tuscan hills at the foot of a small woods. The flowing water of a small stream can be heard and among the trees there is a hoopoe's nest, also very audible during the recording. Present in the background in the distance is the traffic of an extra-urban road and some airliners flying at cruising altitude.

Continuing with my comparisons between the Schoeps Mk 2 and the CCM 4 (mk 4). This was a challenging one as urban noises makes the comparison a little less 'like for like conditions' but generally if you listen to the bird quality over everything else you will hear a significant difference between the two.

Grasscut, the duo of Andrew Phillips and Marcus O’Dair, return in February with a new single, Curlews/September Night’s Sky – the first single from the band’s forthcoming third album, Everyone Was A Bird, to be released by Lo Recordings in May 2015. 

Whilst first performed in collaboration with the Kronos Quartet to over 4,000 people in a warehouse in Poland, Curlews origins lie much closer to home. It’s meditative piano intro, soaring strings and sense of open skies and distant horizons inspired by the British coastline. “I’d started it on the train from Birmingham to Wales,” say Phillips, “and as I reworked it later for the album the music, especially the piano and string rhythms, kept pulling me back back to the Mawddach Estuary. I kept stripping layers and layers away, till eventually the melody, mood, and words were exposed – like they'd always been there.”

“The poet Harriet Tarlo cautions against the lazy use of ornithological metaphors for human emotion, but watching the curlews on the estuary, I really thought: this is me, digging around in the mud till I find it. I hope that's not lazy.”

That sense of place and belonging resonates throughout much of Grasscut’s work, and the forthcoming album features liner notes from the renowned landscape writer Robert Macfarlane. 

Alongside Curlews comes September's Night Sky, a story of a spring equinox in the Southern Hemisphere. Scored by fragmented keyboards, guitars and sweeping strings it brings to mind the sense of both majesty and fragility that a starry night can inspire.

Le 15 février à 19h, Phaune Radio ouvre encore une fenêtre sur des éclats d’ici et d’ailleurs : des battements d’ailes, des chants vibrants, des souffles et des frémissements, des lignes de forces, des mélodies éphémères et bientôt disparues.

À l’occasion des 20 ans de Sonatura, Grégoire Chauvot et Mélia Roger ont rassemblé ces instants de vie saisis par les membres de l’association. Chaque enregistrement, une empreinte sonore, un fragment de paysage vivant qui, en nous, continue d’évoluer.

Always difficult recording nocturnal subjects when you can't see them, especially with a parabolic dish that's super directional. I don't think I got it 'smack' on with this recording but I'm more gutted that the female wasn't present as prior to me getting the recording gear out, she was doing an epic bubbling call back to the male and it would have made such a nice recording but a car pulled up and she flew off...Till next time owls!
