PINE WOODS
We were surrounded by tall pine trees spaced roughly 5 m apart from each other and continuing for at least 80 m in any direction. A large diaphragm condenser microphone was placed roughly 2 m from the Tabla. In a studio condition we would usually be miking at around 20 cm from the instrument. However here our main objective was of course to capture the acoustic environment.
The acoustic properties of the woods were pleasing. Although the sound was not altered too greatly there was a gentle well-balanced reverb similar to a subtle artificial reverb used by music producers in studio recordings.  Of particular note was the effect on the Tabla's brightest sound 'TI'. The sound appeared to be coming from an area some 30 or 40 m away and perhaps from a greater height. The recordings show this by way of considerably more (wet) reverb on the brighter sound than the relative dryness of the other sounds.This one sound also had the effect of greater volume than the other sounds which were relatively well balanced and unaffected by the space. WHY IS THIS? 
Perhaps another point to mention would be that the space was quite beautiful and as such must have affected the perception of the music to the listener/viewer. There was a comment made, 'this is the environment in which Tabla was designed to be played'.

The Original mix is a warm deep twisted journey and on the remixes front, we have Nick Robson delivering two mixes, one goes dubbier and the second one slightly clubbier edge. Japan based Yuuki Hori then churns out a very cool mix that sit between progressive and tech house and lastly Brazilian Rodrigo Soria finishes off the EP with a deep tech house mood.

SPANISH ARTIST CUARTERO DEBUTS WITH THE DYNAMIC 'ABANDONADO' EP ON DESOLAT X The Desolat X series welcomes in spring with a package of peak-time house rollers by Spain's rising star Cuartero, who has already caused a stir with previous releases on labels such as VIVa Music, Moon Harbour Recordings and Butch's Bouq Records. Both 'Abandonado' and 'Children's Game' are perfectly executed examples of peak-time hedonistic house and their thumping beats are characterised by driving drums, pulsating bass, spoken world samples and percussion flourishes throughout. 'Strike' slows down the tempo, adding exotic sounds and samples that create a brooding tense house record. 'Sweet In the Morning' again operates at a slightly slower BPM, with a deeper groove and percussion spirals sweeping throughout the track. Normal service resumes on 'Remember Then' which rounds off the EP in fine style. It is another rolling house cut, which features deep bass, hip-hop sample and 808 whirls. All in all the 'Abandonado' EP is a classy debut release from Cuartero, and his best release to date. Label artwork by Digital Primate.

Scene leading tech house artist, DJs and Stereo Productions label bosses Chus & Ceballos follow up their essential BPM sampler with another fantastic compilation entitled Miami 2017. Aimed at the up coming conference in Miami, the 20 track compilation shows off all of Stereo Productions roster, with lots of artists old and new all offering up killer new cuts. 

From deep and driving to more peak time stuff, this once again shows the Spaniards behind the label have really got their finger on the button. 

Things kick off with one of the most charted artists in the world in the form of Dennis Cruz, then the likes of Rafa Barrios, David Herrero Italians and Lapsus Music bosses Supernova and Oscar L and Sean Collier all come correct. DJ Dep is on fire with his Lets Go Dancing, tracks like Back to Basics are raw and groove driven from UnoMas and Dave Sol and the bosses also appear with an edit of Tiny Garcia. 

Elsewhere the underground anthems keep on coming from names like Reblok, Sound Diffusion, Tony Dee and KIKDRM. German Slend serves up one of many bubbly highlights with Tonite, Adapter get tribal with Are U Pray and Harvy Valencia’s Wannabe is the sort of infectious and smooth tech that has made this label so admired. 

This is a compilation jam packed with hits and is the sort of thing that is sure to soundtrack many of the events at the WMC this year.

Heres a mix of some deeper sleazier style of Tech/House/Nu-Disco I've been feeling lately. 

Reminds me of the Industrial/Nu-Beat/EBM-ish stuff that led me to deep house and techno in the early 90's. 

Recorded live in one take on two Pioneer 800s and a little Numark 2 channel mixer. No beat syncing, edits, cuts or any other post production wizardry...

Recognized as one of Malaysia’s most prominent figures in the music scene with over 20 years of experience in the industry, Alam has dedicated most of his years embracing the culture. Not only is he one of the backbones behind KL's leading establishments, but he has also definitely proven himself to be considered as one of the pioneers of this generation firing up the local and international clubbing scene. 

Known to be characterized as a house and techno DJ, Alam has always been upfront with what he does; his versatile roots comprises an endless amount of diverse sounds and unparalleled grooves. Regardless, he manages to deliver an experience of sound, which always leaves the crowd with wanting more.

With past residencies at major institutions such as Kuala Lumpur’s premier underground club; The Backroom KL, to the more recent Kyo KL, other worldwide venues he’s graced the decks include The Egg London, Eden & Ibiza Rocks Bar, and having recently played under the ‘Music For Freaks’ banner at 528 Ibiza. He’s played at JENJA & Red Ruby in Bali, Kilo Lounge in Singapore, and opened for Danny Tenaglia at Ce La Vi during the Singapore Formula1. He’s also played at Brown Alley & Ffour Melbourne, Oma Hong Kong (Clockenflapp Festival Afterparty), he’s opened for Dubfire at Cha Cha Moon in Koh Samui, and featured at Mustache Bangkok, The Lighthouse & Broma in Vietnam, as well as Indonesia’s infamous Stadium Jakarta and Embassy / Co2.

Alam has also had the privilege of playing alongside a remarkable list of artists, which includes the likes of Nic Fanciulli, Joris Voorn, Seth Troxler, Jamie Jones, Stacey Pullen, Moodymann, Radio Slave, Kenny Dope, Robert Hood, Butch, Ashley Beedle and many more.

In 2005, Alam moved to Australia, where he developed an impressive following playing alongside Melbourne’s finest and hosting his own successful nights at some of the city’s forefront venues. It was his residency with Darkbeat that kick-started his international career, leading to opportunities in supporting world-renowned event brands such as Resident Advisor, Balance Music, Future Entertainment & Hardware Corp, followed by a number of stints on Kiss FM - Australia’s Dance Music Channel.

After 7 years based overseas, Alam returned to his homeland and joined Ohrwurm as a partner. The collective have been responsible for shaping the Kuala Lumpur scene over the past decade, and have featured iconic names from John Digweed to Michael Mayer, Gerd Janson and Amelie Lens, to live acts such as Guti, KiNK and Stimming, amongst countless others.

In 2014, Alam launched his own recording studio named Decibel Soundlab, which is a one-stop resource for all kinds of audio related productions. On the production note, he’s released 2 EPs on Love International, as well as on his own imprint; Ohrwurm KL Recordings, which was launched in August 2021. His first ever EP ‘Kaleidosimple’ was released on Redflux Cinnabar in 2009 with remixes from Nick Robson, Rodrigo Soria, and Yuuki Hori. The release was charted numerous times and received widespread praise with support from DJs on shows like FriskyRadio and Proton. 

Other highlights to mention was playing at Vietnam’s Epizode festival for 2 years in a row, and not forgetting his 9hrs marathon set he did at The Sweatbox in Elysium. Alam was also selected as one of the supporting acts for Circo Loco 2019 in Malaysia. Throughout the years he’s been featured on Data Transmission, Mixmag Asia, United We Stream, Ibiza Live Radio, UB Radio Bangkok, and Malaysia’s very own Red104.9FM & Capital 88.9FM, as well as interviews on KLue, Juice Magazine, The Star Newspaper, Coconuts KL, and recently on The City List Kuala Lumpur.

In conjunction with celebrating his 20 years of DJing, Alam hosted 20 livestreams during the Covid pandemic in 2020, featuring some of the best local talents, which concluded with a finale video filmed by Effilix Production. Two of Alam’s videos were included in Mixmag’s “Top 20 Livestreams of 2020”. His aim was to showcase Malaysia’s talents on a global scale. The livestreams continued for another year with ‘Ohrwurm presents Micasa Sucasa’. There is still much to come, as this is only the beginning of his musical chapter as Alam continues to progress immensely across the global dance music culture.
