For the 27th edition of our DECENNIUM series we bring you this exclusive DJ set from Natural Selection resident @second_storey. 

One of the greatest things about 2020 for us was bringing Second Storey (Alec) into the Natural Selection family. Born and bred in UK, now based in Berlin, Alec has been at the forefront of the underground Electronic Music scene for well over a decade and releasing on mammoth labels such as Frustrated Funk, TRUST and Aus Music is fully testament to that. A professional drummer with a lifelong passion for music and a love of experimenting with new sounds, Alec isn’t constrained by boundaries, which is one of the reasons why he has slotted in perfectly with our musical ethos. His roots in bass-heavy Techno and Electro pulse throughout his tracks, whilst he meticulously cares for the defining quality to his craft; Funk. Alec's tracks regularly feature in sets / mixes from an extensive list of heavyweight artists, most notably in recent times, the legendary Autechre. 

Alec has DJ'd and played live all over the UK and Europe. His debut set for Natural Selection as part of our collaboration with Delsin Records, was sadly postponed due to the pandemic, however we were ecstatic to finally have Alec cement his residency at our live stream at FOLD in August last year, playing alongside Ansome, Sigha and fellow residents Kodah, Voicedrone and SWARMM. Keep your ears to the ground for the new date for our Delsin collaboration in which Alec forms part of one of our most lethal lineups to date.

To have such an esteemed artist with us on the Natural Selection frontline is an absolute honour and we are proud to be able to present to you his exquisitely crafted DECENNIUM mix.

DECENNIUM28 - Craigie Knowes

The 28th edition of our DECENNIUM series comes courtesy of Craigie Knowes founders, Mitch Hunter and Max Spittal.

Hailing from Glasgow and Perth, @craigie-knowes is a record label which has gained a reputation for furious, underground club cuts purpose built for the dance-floor. Since 2015 the label has released a prolific array of music from the likes of Jensen Interceptor, DJ Overdose, Carl Finlow, James Shinra, Cygnus and more. Beyond this they have also released two stellar compilations in support of the charity War Child of which the likes of Legowelt, Luke Vibert, London Modular, etc. have all supported and featured. 
 
Mitch and Max themselves are a renowned DJ duo, who would normally be found gigging around the globe pre-pandemic, spinning a diverse selection of underground electronic music soaked in attitude. Their exclusive, heavy-hitting mix for our DECENNIUM series perfectly showcases the Craigie Knowes sound and was an absolute pleasure to listen to and kept us moving from start to finish.

The recording of our final digital journey in the Silo on March 20th 2021 after so many years of amazing memories, new friendships and transporting musical experiences in this place. 

It was through hosting our residency at Griessmuehle that our collective formed back in the day, and later the label. The initial Mechatronica releases only came about, after we connected deeper with artists that we booked to play our nights at GM.

The venue on Sonnenallee has sadly been demolished now to pave way for another unnecessary new building project in this city. 

Griessmuehle has changed name and will open at a new great location in Berlin - follow @revier_suedost for updates.

Stay safe and we hope to see you all soon, whenever it will be possible to dance again.

We kick off our 808-month with a sorceress of diverse sounds spanning electronic music and beyond. Sharpening her craft at influential underground parties in LA and passionately building her record collection over the past eight years, Miranda Calzada has shared the stage with techno elite such as Function, Rrose, Cio D'Or, Lucy, Voices from the Lake, Daniel Bell, Carlos Souffront, and Ø [Phase], to name a few. 

She is the purveyor at Neptunian Influence, an electro-focused mix and event series, on which she has featured an expertly chosen artist list containing the likes of 214, James Shinra, DVS NME, Sound Synthesis, Gian, ADAB, Kiernan Laveaux and Sassmouth. 

In 2017 she participated in the second installation of the Walking & Falling DJ mentorship program in Chicago, where she also performed alongside the inimitable Eris Drew. In November 2019 she was invited to DJ at Ellen Allien's 'Vinylism' held at Stellar Remnant’s record shop in DTLA - one of her most cherished gigs to date.

Galaxian 

The penultimate mix of this month's crazy roster is hosted by none other than military antagonist Galaxian; he comfortably occupies a space outside of the easily definable genres of today.  A sound as equally varied as it is evocative, often hard to classify and pigeonhole but never less than absorbing. He’s never an artist to become stagnant or be confined within obvious conventions.  Dousing the listener in dramatic, organic textures before sweeping them into a pulsating blaze of machine-gun percussion.  A maelstrom of intricate drum programming and soaring melodies erupt from a wave of psychedelic ambience.    
His discography includes releases on Return To Disorder, Ilian Tape, DMX Krew's Breakin’ Records, Natural Sciences, Shipwrec (both his iconic “Uprising” and “NU-1000” together with DJ Stingray)plus inclusions in his close ally Helena Hauff’s infamous Kern Vol. 5 [Tresor] with “Private Tyranny” and "Viral Shredding" on mumdance' highly regarded Shared Meanings, are distinctive and remarkably vital and have further cemented his reputation for an unorthodox, idiosyncratic methodology.

A provocative subversive aesthetic steeped in philosophical and anarchistic attitude further submerge the listener in Galaxian’s visions and ethos.  Appearing in trademark helmet and mask evoking imagery of militant resistance, revolt and liberation, as if in preparation for the rapid approaching disintegration of civilisation.  

His searing live performances command attention, making appearances next to legends like Anthony Rother, The Exaltics, Aux 88, I-F, Thomas P. Heckmann (and of course Helena Hauff and DJ Stingray), his dark drum programming and synth eruptions soundtrack cyber-attacks that are utterly visceral and unorthodox, so much so, that an hour in his presence will leave you feeling exhausted he packs so much in. 

  While you are catching your breath from our 155th episode, you might want to tent to his newest release “Like Sunlit Threads” for his most recent project Kas; alternating interstellar ambient & raging electro forming an intriguing combination of dystopian yet mysteriously pleasant impressions, adding to that having an oil painting by Bettina Zenker that can go straight on the most pristine spot in your house and a track name as “Holographic Matrix Of Informational Totality”, like where can you go wrong? (!), again on the always impeccable Ilian Tape.

Area Forty_One - Planet Delsin Mix (June 2015)

VC-118A is a firm favourite with electro’s most hardcore fans. The Dutchman - who also works as Mohlao and Multicast Dynamics - covers every shade from moody and insular to purely for the floor. He’s a regular on the most reliable labels in the scene including Delsin (where he just released his new album 'Inside'), Frustrated Funk and Radio Matrix, and always manages to get rich contrasts in his music that make it as impactful as it is thoughtful. He’s also one of the most able live acts in the game; someone who soundtracks imaginary movies that play out while you’re lost in the darkness. 

He keeps it high tempo over the course of an hour here, with corrugated drum funk and glistening sci-fi synths all racing along and taking you with them. At times there is an aggressive sense of industrialism to the music, but just when the pressure is about to get too much, you’re off into more eerie and empty sonic worlds that forever keep you guessing. Sit back, then, and enjoy a master at work.

In the Bubble Bath with: Francois Dillinger

It is a natural process to end something, so that there is room for new things to emerge. After releasing 39 FIBER Podcasts over a period of almost 10 years we arrived at number 40; the final release in this series.

For the closing piece, we asked vinyl connoisseur and Freerotation Festival resident Alex Downey to record a grand finale. And so he did… In three hours Alex will take you through the depths of his record collection. That says a lot when you know that he operates a warehouse stocked floor to ceiling with vinyl.
