Saturday night, mom and dad went out to the lanes
so Billy spent the night at grandma Jane's
the next morning, grandma Jane parted his hair
then picked out a short suit for him to wear

Together they walked into a hallowed room
greeting sweaty palms in stifling air of (old lady) perfume
At the alter, Billy took out a toy he had hidden up his sleeve
But was chastised and pushed hastily to his knees

His eyes now tightly shut, soon his mind drifted upstream
He battled the listless words around him with a vivid daydream
Still the priest carried on obligated to save his soul
He knew Billy's faith was fading and soon it would be time to go

They kneeled again before the statues and circumstance
And the priest thought of the closing hymn as his last chance
To lasso Billy's soul in ritual and fear
And give his life purpose for time spent here

Catbird Seat

I'm sitting in the catbird seat
biding my time
snakes slithering at my feet
uncoil and unwind
 
I wonder if I should strike
am I too slow and numb?
I just listen for the bark and I watch for the bite
to protect what I've become

later, you'll rest your hand where i used to lie
and I'll come down from the clouds, forgoing the sky

i used to think i needed them
but i'm remembering every day
the unknown from which we stem
never goes away

so, i'll try to make a clean break
and escape on my own
linger between asleep and awake
to remember all i'm shown
