Happy New Year everyone and welcome back to another Transmission broadcasting from the HER 他 Transmission Mix Series. We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who made 2021 special and has continued to support HER throughout everything that has been happening since we threw our first event in Taipei back in late 2019. 

Before officially welcoming 2022 into our lives, we want to deliver a special edition New Years Eve HER Transmission, and for this we have invited Sam Eckhardt.  

Sam is a writer and archivist based in Naarm [Melbourne]. She is part owner and operator of the record store Lulu's; a shop that focuses on music and writing from the Australian underground and like-minded contemporary international movements. Her mix for HER incorporates works taken from, amongst more conventional sources, privately produced cassettes, CD-Rs, and her own extensive archive of live recordings.

In addition to her work at Lulu's, she is currently working on an English language history of the Japanese experimental rock band Hikashu.

I Know It's Not Funny

Almost 20 years ago Jürgen De Blonde debuted on KRAAK with the nowadays unfindable and almost visionary album köhn 1. It was the starting point for a vital and wondrous exploration that lead him over paths of glitch, idm, shoe gaze, hypnagogic pop, improvised music, straight forward synth music, field recordings and kraut. 

In the middle of this ungraspable adventure through contemporary electronic music, Köhn stands as a genuine artist that stayed true to the curious spirit of the DIY knob twiddling and boggling boy he once was. 

KRAAK is proud to present his 7th album on KRAAK — Kreis Plön, which documents and envisions 20 years of exploring. It’s an album that is about a fusion of the past and the future, of separation and reconfiguration, of mourning and rejoicing, of noise and peace. Kreis Plön is about geolocation. It’s about probable fiction and looking for bits of different puzzles that fit together. An exercise in linear and perpendicular coherence devoid of any objective logic. 

In the middle of the album an artist is envisioning his place in the Now, questioning how or when he got there, as he links memories to imaginary places, and real places to imaginary histories. Kreis Plön stands as such a masterpiece that bluntly envisions the future of electronic music.

@anton-kubikov’s special ear for ambience and tonal spaces was always an integral part of SCSI-9’s musical DNA that would alternate between tight dance workouts and vast melodic range – but it’s as a solo artist that he truly started to explore these spaces, following mysterious sonic trails into foggy, reverb-heavy territory. Kubikov’s contributions to the several instalments of our Pop Ambient compilation series announced the arrival of a promising new project in our talent pool – a promise more than satisfied with the immersive sound bath of first solo outing WHATNESS (out July 14).

Australia’s first gold record selling album was the Horrie Dargie Concert (1952, a live concert recording by the Horrie Dargie Harlequintet (more commonly known as the Horrie Dargie Quintet), led by harmonicist Horrie Dargie. ‘The Three Bears’ was the opening number.

The Town Hall concert was recorded on Pyrox Wire Recorder, on a wire that was 1.5 miles long (one 1000 of an inch diameter) and ran for one hour. At the time Australian recordings were still being pressed on 78s in shellac, but microgroove LPs had just arrived. According to pioneer music producer Bill Armstrong, in order to cut the new microgroove LP for the Concert recording, an AWA lathe had to be repurposed. The lathe had been geared for 120 grooves per inch for 78s and 16 inch radio transcription discs; however, for the Concert microgroove LP a special lead screw and half nut was made to cut 200 grooves per inch, with a sapphire cutting stylus ground to a tip radius of one millimetre, the grooves on 78 discs are 3 millimetres.

The 10″ LP record of the farewell concert sold exceptionally well, soon reaching 75,000 copies sold – becoming Australia's first Gold Record!

2nd album from Danish synth-improv duo Videodrones, dives deeper their brand of throbbing synth themes from the goriest movies that never was. 
 
It’s easy to hear the starting point of Videodrones: From italian composers such as Fabio Frizzi, Marcello Giombini, Riz Ortolani - or even Morricone & Alessandroni at their most industrial. But Videodrones adds a touch of previously unheard madness to their Giallo-themed synth-gasms. Based largely on improvisation, Videodrones tosses and turns - it’s like the thing is ALIVE: leaving slimy trail of electronic musical styles in their wake: there’s toxic levels of italio disco, german kosmiche musik, new age, even some stabs at holy grails of 70’s and 80’s pop. The record culminates in a Synth-proto-doom track - Nattens Hævn (Revenge of the Night): too weird to live, yet too rare to die.
 
Videodrones improvisations are far from boring: chopped into smaller bits the album is of a suite-like nature - keeping the odd, jagged energy of improvisation, every part adds to a whole, larger narrative. The result is a suite-like walkthru, often changing pace, dropping notes or drifting in scale. The images Videodrones convey is collectedly strangely solemn - almost uplifting at times, in their maddening state of constant synth flux.

"These eight compositions pull in a by-catch of maritime folklore; of Siren and Selkie, Seagull and engine oil slick". This is how we got introduced to the new album of Wilson Tanner. 

Wilson Tanner is the mutual project of Australian artists Andras (Andrew Wilson) and Eleventeen Eston (John Tanner). Here they release "II", a follow up to their debut full-length published in 2016. 

Through the 8 tracks, Andrew and John captured Ambient and Electronica landscapes, all recorded in 3 days, on September 2017, aboard a 1950s riverboat with weatherproof instruments. 

While listening to the LP, we instantly felt in love with the whole aesthetic and the peaceful feeling that spead throughout the tracks. "All Hands Bury the Dead" is our pickup from the release with its early 70s / late 60s electronic sound that brings back a lot of music and visual memories.

Young Libs - LVIV

YOR is a Leipzig outfit formed by artists Nataly, Tony and Susanne. Known in their local scene for their Beach Boy covers and associations with bands like Mosquito Ego, the trio confounded the bleary-eyed audience at KRAAK Festival 2019’s 24-hour experiment with their offbeat no wave that does not shy away from moments of funky reflection or manic free-form detours.

On LOVE, they bounce from energetic bursts of guitar-laden catharses to groovy bass lines designed for a strange intimacy within a crumbling chaos. Post-punk codes take on a decidedly outsider bent which infuse an offbeat brand of love song, where babbled, screamed and moaned lyrics recount banal yet oddly confidential vignettes of intimacy through frenzied mantras. Each song is a state in itself, and no two songs are alike - much like how every experienced moment of love exists on its own and is different from the next.

"My favourite recording from my time in Shanghai, and one that's representative of my experience of the city during the past decade. It was recorded at M50, an old factory complex that had been converted into artists' studios and gallery. 

I was showing my friend around that day and there was this tremendous sound. Each thump rattled the glass in the old windows and shook the ground. We explored a little and found a high vantage point to witness the reinforcement of the bank along Suzhou Creek, with a new row of piles not 30 meters from where we stood. 

We stood there mesmerized with the violent rhythm. Notice the echolocation-like effect of the hits bouncing from the glass buildings across the river. Creating space with a non-visual medium."

In this episode, 'Bayankhongorijn Khukh Nuur' by Patrick Franke. 

"In 2013 I took part in an expedition to Central Mongolia. I was focussing on sound recordings to clarify the taxonomic status of some species based on bioacoustics or even to make first ever recordings."

Amongst other places we went to an alpine area surrounding the lake Bayankhongorijn Khukh Nuur. As days during expeditions are usually very packed, time for recordings of the general soundscape or even enjoying that just by listening is very limited. Thus, this excerpt of an one hour recording is a rather rare exception.

My aim was to document the soundscape of this particular spot after capturing vocalisations of most of it's inhabitants discretely. Furthermore this recording of a sparsely populated habitat should scrutinise Bernie Krauses 'acoustic niche' theory which is mostly based on data from densely populated habitats."
