Following a seventeen year hiatus since the release of Symbiotics on Mille Plateaux in 1999, Porter Ricks returns with a new EP on Tresor with plans for another release this coming year. The duo comprises of sound artist Thomas Köner and music producer Andy Mellwig.

During the duo’s silence, Köner has been working extensively as a sound designer and artist – exhibiting at among other places the Centre Georges Pompidou and The Louvre. Mellwig’s other projects include collaborations with Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine, Pete Kember of Spacemen 3 and former Monolake member Gehrard Behles. Porter Ricks is undoubtedly the central item in their musical careers, setting a high-water mark for experimentally
tinged pulsating techno.

Shadow Boat is deeply nuanced in its perception of space, using complex layers to add depth, detail, and density to non-formulaic techno compositions: buoyant dub, hazy ambience, and colorful sound design renders the project a diving platform at the intersection of club music and art. Though perhaps more focused on rhythm and melody than their experimental touchstone Biokinetics released 20 years ago on Chain Reaction in 1996, this most recent installment employs equally subtle artistic sensibilities that transcend the styles that typify contemporary electronic music.

Köner and Mellwig reveal the EP on the heels of a recent performance at Berlin Atonal festival, marking a new tide in their pace of output. The gap between Porter Ricks’ releases, however, has proven that extended periods in the studio devoid of the pressure for consistent delivery permit the time to craft a very sophisticated sonic fabric. Shadow Boat, as if carried by a current, drifts in cadence with Porter Ricks’ earlier releases as though pulled by a gravitational force spanning the stroke of time.

Keeping up their fine schedule, the Spazio Disponibile label is back with a fifth excellent EP, this time from Modes. Modes is an artist who is making his debut here, and he is one of a few guys Spazio is creating a platform for in the coming months. 

Modes fits right in with the deeply subliminal, transcendental style of the label and its associated party in Rome. Opener ‘M52’ is a supple and sci-fi mix of smooth rubber kicks and Millsian melodies that are trippy and hypnotic. ‘M51’ is darker and moodier, with smeared pads and grainy ambience making for a big and shadowy chamber of end-of-days techno that is full of foreboding, and finally ‘M44’ is more forceful and brutal, with reverb and electricity static adding texture to the cavernous airwaves. Compelling from start to finish, this is a fantastic debut from Modes.

A relative newcomer, Antigone joined Token in 2015 after a succession of releases on well-respected imprints such as Concrete and Construct Re-Form. His first Token record was a 2LP statement of purpose, with hints of neo-classical ambience in the opener into decisive, utilitarian mesmerism for the dancefloor in later tracks. He returned again earlier this year with the Saudade EP for TOKEN59; an overall heavier offering that still manages to retain some of the delicacy of the first.
 
Now he’s back with a 3 tracker for TOKEN68. Antigone employs an advancement on his usual sonic vocabulary to produce yet another record of surprising techno tracks. Static’s lead is woody as it begins, then evolves with gradual accents – a confident off-beat hi hat and detailed highlights varying in aggression.
 
Shadow Play starts out more panicked than playful, then straightens out under the driving percussion. This track is all about noisy atmospherics, confusing our sense of space through masterful panning.
 
Where the A-side is staunchly anti-melodic, Walking Distance is dulcet in comparison. Amusing hi-end synth work captivates over a practical but absorbing bassline, gradually building just enough to keep us gripped without succumbing to extravagance.

Ubiquitous Barcelona producer Edu Tarradas keeps on gaining a well-earned reputation as Clip. Tarradas was invited to the 2011 Red Bull Music Academy in Madrid and has provided vigorous releases to such labels as Struments, Classicworks, and FINA White, where the pounding “Brotherhoood EP” was released to be supported by serious selectors as Ben Sims, Truncate, Anja Schneider, XXXY, Throwing Snow, Skream, Luke Solomon and Simon Baker.
Now, Clip returns to action with the first release of his own imprint (along with fellow Barcelona producer Xixa) Abstract Places Audio. On these four new tracks, Tarradas shows many different faces as a producer and showing the influence of ambient and dub on his music. Although this is not strictly a club record, A side brings enough energy to keep the floor packed, always with a dark hint that keeps things coherent and make them rise over the average DJ tool. Risks taken in his 100% analogical live sets now pay Tarradas the reward of a more complete musicianship with more drama and deepness added to his compositions. Opener “Gebre” (“Rime” in Catalan) sets the mood: dark, acute techno from minute one with noisy frequencies that graze the track like airplanes over the dancefloor. Mysterious “Boira” (“Mist”) mixes deep echoes with frozen ambient layers and distant clapping in a cinematic track. On the other side, “Miratge” (“Mirage”) keeps on adding frozen and distant layers over a collection of brilliant beats that seem to grow and speed up endlessly. “Zud” closes the pack as an ambient track full of tension.
Avoiding almost completely the influence of house that propelled his music in previous releases and adding a masterly dark tone, Clip excels in creating a coherent and haunting atmosphere in this debut EP from his new label. An excellent opener for a label that will become everyone’s favourite.

The tension between the natural and artificial, the body and mind, are central themes in electronic music in general, and Techno in particular, as the means of creation, focused around technology and interactions with machines, contrast with the emotional response to sound, the mystical ritual of collective dancing, and the ethos of liberation and tolerance embedded in the culture it produced.

We’re navigating a world of engineered pleasures, big data monitoring of movements and consumption habits, and falsely objective representations of reality, further blurred by a reduced attention span and several opaque layers of cultural interpretation and political manipulation.

Manichean simplifications are used to create hate and fear in order to achieve domination and impose limits on freedom, and the irrational belief in endless growth, increasingly disconnected from nature, led to massive environmental destructions and waves of unprecedented extinctions of species.

Our primal sensuous perception, vastly more abstract, emotional and sensual, make us feel the world as an ambiguous realm we are part of, but not in control of ; a complex network of interacting forces and enigmatic patterns, a matrix of overlapping desires. Rebuilding our bonds with nature, Reconnecting with our senses, and spreading love in the process becomes an essential act of resistance.

Hyper Opal Mantis is a triptych on 3 states of desire, and the first long player of Kangding Ray for Stroboscopic Artefacts.
HYPER is the primal, sensual lust, OPAL is the emotional catharsis, a blissful desire for love. MANTIS, like the insect it refers to, is the destructive, fatal attraction.

The next Dust REC album is ready to be released! It is going to be launched under a series of mini albums entitled Origins and Dorian Gray is in charge of signing it.

As it is usual in these series, the music, the graphic concept and packaging melt together to create a unique way of artistic expression.

This album is going to be released in CD and digital format. It also includes a postcard, a sticker and a star map, which is printed in a transparency sheet and safe-kept in a tube. Its packaging conveys different viewpoints of life, depending on how one looks at it. How big is the universe? Do we know everything about it?

All these objects are packed in a handmade box designed for this special occasion.
