United States politician Nancy Pelosi, while serving as the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, visited Taiwan (officially the Republic of China) on 2 August 2022.

A delegation of five Democratic Party members of the House accompanied Pelosi on the visit. The two-day trip to Taiwan was part of a tour of Asia that also included stops in Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan.
President Joe Biden discouraged but did not prevent Pelosi from travelling to Taiwan, and the White House later affirmed her right to visit the island nation.

In anticipation to Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, The People's Republic of China had strongly condemned the visit, and called the visit a "provocation" by the US that "seriously infringes upon China's sovereignty".

China warned the US would be playing with fire if its leader were to allow Pelosi to visit Taiwan. On 2 August, PRC ambassador to the UN Zhang Jun said such a visit is provocative and will undermine China-US relations.

Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) reported twenty-one People's Liberation Army (PLA) planes flew into its air defense identification zone (ADIZ) on 2 August. 

The MND reported that 22 PLA aircraft entered its ADIZ crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait, and an additional five fighters entered the southwestern part of its ADIZ on 3 August. In addition, the PRC began military drills in six areas encircling Taiwan on 4 August, which ended on 7 August

Satanic Verses are words of "satanic suggestion" which the Islamic prophet Muhammad is alleged to have mistaken for divine revelation. The verses praise the three pagan Meccan goddesses: al-Lāt, al-'Uzzá, and Manāt and can be read in early prophetic biographies of Muhammad by al-Wāqidī, Ibn Sa'd and the tafsir of al-Tabarī. The first use of the expression is attributed to Sir William Muir in 1858.

THE Satanic Verses, on the other hand, is the fourth novel of British-Indian writer Salman Rushdie. First published in September 1988, the book was inspired by the life of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. As with his previous books, Rushdie used magical realism and relied on contemporary events and people to create his characters. The title refers to the Satanic Verses, a group of Quranic verses that refer to three pagan Meccan goddesses: Allāt, Al-Uzza, and Manāt.

In mid-February 1989, following a violent riot against the book in Pakistan, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, then Supreme Leader of Iran and a Shiite scholar, issued a fatwa calling for the death of Rushdie and his publishers, and called for Muslims to point him out to those who can kill him if they cannot themselves.

Conservative politician Norman Tebbit, the party's former chairman, called Rushdie an "outstanding villain" whose "public life has been a record of despicable acts of betrayal of his upbringing, religion, adopted home and nationality..."

Despite a conciliatory statement by Iran in 1998, and Rushdie's declaration that he would stop living in hiding, the Iranian state news agency reported in 2006 that the fatwa would remain in place permanently since fatawa can only be rescinded by the person who first issued them, and Khomeini had since died.

On 12 August 2022, while about to start a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, New York, Rushdie was attacked by a man who rushed onto the stage and stabbed him repeatedly, including in the neck and abdomen.

The attacker was pulled away before being taken into custody by a local trooper; Rushdie was airlifted to UPMC Hamot, a tertiary trauma center in Erie, Pennsylvania, where he underwent surgery before being put on a ventilator.

Sources close to Rushdie have said he is now on the road to recovery, but recovery will take a long time as he is severely injured. This composition is inspired by these events and the history that preceded them.

Does the unborn child know about the violence outside. Does she know how cheap & expendable her life is...? Is she afraid...? Does she feel pain...?

Does the unborn know his life may end before it starts...? Does he hate his killers, the butchers who ripped his unformed body from his mother's womb...?

Remember how adamant I was when dismissing Socialism? I was so convinced of Western-Style Liberal Democracy inherent superiority. Remember what you always said to me? “…Every society believes in a long scale of gradations of rank and differences of worth…and each requires slavery in some form or another. Unconvinced, I kept on pressing the issue, until you said to me, “…it is easy to judge the worth of a Система from the comfort, the safety of white sands and endless breeze. Go to the jungle. See, fight and kill for yourself; then tell me which is better…” And so I did. #Soledar (Соледа́р) formerly known as Karlo-Libknekhtovsk (Карло-Лібкнехтівськ), is a city in Bakhmut Raion, which is located in #Donetsk Oblast of Ukraine.

The Battle of Soledar began in early August, with Russian forces capturing much of the eastern half of Soledar by September, although being stalled afterwards. As of January 11th, control of Soledar is disputed, with some sources claiming that Russia's #Wagner Group were in control of the settlement, while others dispute this version.

Following the capture of #Bakhmutske by the Russian forces on 27 December, Russian sources claimed that Russian forces seized the #Dekonskaya railway station on the southern outskirts of Soledar on 4 January

The fall of Soledar may help Russian troops in their assault on the strategic Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, about 10km (6 miles) to the south west, providing them with a secure artillery position within range of the city.

According to Ukraine, more than 100 Russian troops were killed in the battle for the eastern town during the past 24 hours. Ukraine said on Thursday its troops were holding out despite heavy fighting on a battlefield littered with bodies in a salt mining town in Eastern Ukraine, where Russian mercenaries have claimed Moscow's first significant gain in half a year.

The ultra-nationalist contract militia Wagner, run by an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin outside the main chain of military command, claims to have taken Soledar after intense fighting that it said had left the town strewn with Ukrainian dead. Russia says its forces are edging closer to capturing Soledar, a salt-mining town in eastern Ukraine, which would mark an elusive victory for the Kremlin but comes at the cost of heavy Russian casualties and extensive destruction of the territory they claim.

Moscow has held off officially proclaiming victory. "At the moment, there are still some small pockets of resistance in Soledar," Andrei Bayevsky, a Russian-installed local politician, said in an online broadcast. Ukraine has acknowledged Russian advances but Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Malyar told a briefing on Thursday that fighting was still fierce. The Russians were "moving over their own corpses," she said. Reuters was unable to independently verify the situation. “The Russians have literally marched on the bodies of their own soldiers, burning everything on their way,” Kyrylenko said, while reporting that Russian forces had shelled a dozen towns and villages in the region in the past day.

Soledar’s fall would be a prize for a Kremlin starved of good battlefield news in recent months after losing the significant city of Kherson in December. It had barely 10,000 inhabitants before the war. Russia has failed in repeated attempts to capture the far more important nearby city of Bakhmut, 10 times as large. Across Ukraine, the front lines have barely budged since Russia's last big retreat in the south two months ago. Kyiv hopes heavy armour from Western allies will allow it to resume advances.

Russian and Western commentators alike saw attempts to shift blame for setbacks in which Russia has lost around 40 per cent of the territory it had seized since February. The Russians’ tactic in the assault on Soledar has been to send one or two waves of soldiers, many from the private Russian military contractor Wagner Group who take heavy casualties as they probe the Ukrainian defences, a Ukrainian officer near Soledar told The Associated Press. Pavlo Kyrylenko, the governor of Donetsk, told Ukrainian state TV that 559 civilians remained in Soledar, including 15 children, and could not be evacuated. “Russia is driving its own people to the slaughter by the thousands, but we are holding on.”

When asked about Prigozhin’s victory claims, Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, told journalists: “Let’s not rush, let’s wait for official statements. There is a positive dynamic in progress.”

A former member of the private militia escaped to Norway seeking asylum. He is under tight security over fears for his life. Norwegian authorities say they have detained a Russian man who may have illegally entered the country seeking asylum on January 13. The individual in question, Andrey Medvedev, is a former member of Russia's notorious Wagner Group, a private militia active in Ukraine as well as in Africa and Syria.


Andrey Medvedev, 26, crossed the border into Norway last Friday, where he was detained by border guards. He is currently being held in the Oslo area where he faces charges of illegal entry to Norway, his lawyer Brynjulf Risnes told the BBC. Tarjei Sirma-Tellefsen, police chief of staff in the Norwegian region of Finnmark, said a man had been detained by a border patrol and said he had applied for asylum.


Medvedev is a former soldier in the Russian army. He later served time in prison between 2017 and 2018, before joining the Wagner Group. He was placed in charge of a Wagner division in Ukraine, where the mercenary group supplied him with around 30-40 troops every week. Mr Medvedev said he fled Ukraine in November after being informed that the group intended to extend his contract indefinitely. It is believed Mr Medvedev had taken some evidence of war crimes with him to Norway and that he intends to share his information with groups investigating war crimes in the coming weeks.


The UK's Ministry of Defense officials believe the Wagner Group makes up about 10% of Russia's forces in Ukraine, and played a significant part in helping Moscow's forces take the town of Soledar in eastern Donbas region last week. Briefly arrested upon his arrival in Norway and then released, Medvedev has or will soon be questioned by both Norwegian immigration authorities and the criminal police (Kripos), which is taking part in an international inquiry into war crimes in Ukraine. Medvedev's Norwegian lawyer, Brynjulf Risnes, told AFP his client was "willing to speak about his experiences in the Wagner Group to people who are investigating war crimes".

Comedian Ray Romano once said during one of his stand-up performances that the secret to a life, or rather the secret to finding happiness in life was due our ability to use life’s own edit button. This innate ability we all share to edit events in our past to erase the bits that don’t fit our idyllic recollections.

This is true, think back at any point in your own life and you will see that most of the memories we recall are of the “happy bits”. Long gone are the dark clouds that hung on the periphery; the shades of grey that darken our rainbow.

I think it was Anil Seth who said,

“…Your brain hallucinates your conscious reality…”

This means reality itself is a hallucination concocted by our brain. We call it reality simply because we all agree on the contours of the hallucination and nothing more.

Maybe Ray Romano is right — maybe it’s Anil Seth who nailed the nail on the head. I, for once, am quite happy to delude myself into believing there is light, and love, and laughter in the world.

I am quite content going on believing the world is “shit” ONLY because I have not met a single person that embodies my ideals of honesty, empathy, forthrightness and virtue — but I am sure they are somewhere out there.

Most days, this delusion holds true and my brain goes on creating this hallucination we call reality, in a way that fits my mold. I say most days because yesterday Signor Fortuna ruined my day. He sat there and tore the emperor’s clothes. I tried to resist, cloaking myself in laughter and sunlight; but he would not have it — he lobbed Cynicism and scorn until the Jericho walls were reduced to ruin.

Behind this wall, was not only the naked emperor, but it turned out he never wore clothes. Worse still, he was not a mighty and wise ruler — but instead a hideous creature covered in puss and boils. A weak, jealous and petty shell, bathed in a sea of excrement.

“Humanity?” I cried in vain.

“Is that you?” I asked. I asked myself, where did your empires go? What became of your philosophers, your dreamers…the saints who pointed the way?

You spoke of empathy, of love for our fellow men. Signor Fortuna showed this to be untrue.

“Guarda i tuoi compagni, sciocco! Vedere? Non c’è empatia in questi occhi…”

We see pain, but we don’t see ourselves. Hopelessness and despair colonize our parks, yet we veer left, or step over lump on the sidewalk…We jump over the shit-stained sleeping bag and the soul-less wretch within it.

“Humanity, is that you?”

I asked again. Signor Fortuna was unmoved.

“…Venderanno le loro mogli, la loro casa… il loro primogenito per avere la possibilità di infilarsi l’ago nelle vene…”

Don’t you see? He taunted. It has always been this way. 12,000 years since the last ice age and very little have changed.

This “…Corpus scientiae…” to which you cling, these temples, these oracles…these philosophers you hold so dear. They are nothing but a distraction. A Canàrd we have invented to pass the time in between orgies of violence, greed and unflinching hatred for ourselves…for this world of shit on which we live.

“No! I don’t believe you,” I tried to say.

“…Il y a beaucoup d’amour, de lumière, de fraternité dans ce monde…”

Born in the island of Hispaniola; I am a Software Engineer, Private Researcher, Writer and Self-Taught musician & composer (Classical/Jazz fusion) based in North-West Alberta, Canada. I play Piano, Alto Sax & Latin Percussion. All the compositions in this channel are improvisations. That is, they are Conceptualized, Compossed , Arranged & Performed, for better or worse in real time, in a single take. What you hear is these compositions being born, taking form, as-it-happen. There may be some minimal re-arrangement, editing and/or  post-processing; but the nature of the original composition remains intact.
