Inspired by titans of the genre like Windir, Agalloch and Drudkh as well as the contemporary Dutch scene, Alburnum was formed by core member D.B. in early 2017. To record their debut album, the prolific R.v.R. (Faceless Entity, Wandelaars) was recruited as session musician on drums and additional vocals to complete the studio lineup.

“Alburnum” refers to the Latin word for sapwood; the soft, still growing wood found underneath the bark of trees. Besides the direct reference to nature, the band name also carries a philosophical intention: to expose the continuous personal growth beneath our own surface, hidden by the exterior shell. A reflection on the trials of life in modern society, and a longing for simpler times that may have never existed.

“Buitenlucht” (translation: “Outside Air”) was recorded, mixed and mastered at Catacomben Studios by W. Damiaen (Laster, Freja) and released on 12” vinyl, CD and MC by the mighty Babylon Doom Cult Records.
