Velvet and Hush” – A Poetic Portrait of Postpartum Psychosis

This haunting, lyrical piece captures the surreal and disorienting experience of a mother plunged into the depths of postpartum psychosis. Told through visceral imagery and disjointed perception, it follows the narrator from the moment of birth — when her newborn feels unfamiliar and synthetic — through a descent into altered reality, self-doubt, and detachment.

The mother describes the baby as doll-like, alien, possibly a trick of the hospital, while the world around her warps into a distorted sensory nightmare. Curtains whisper, taps speak in Morse code, and her thoughts twist into terrifying logic. There’s an overwhelming fear of harming the baby, not through intent, but through fragility — the child too sacred, too delicate, and perhaps undeserved.

As psychosis deepens, she becomes convinced she is not the real mother, that something is wrong with her very identity. Her delusions fuse with intrusive thoughts, culminating in the belief that her own nonexistence might offer the child safety. This dark bird of thought lodges in her spine — a chilling metaphor for suicidal ideation.

Eventually, help arrives. Time, medication, and care begin to reassemble her sense of self. The final verse leaves her in a state of fragile calm — bonded to her child but forever changed. She watches other mothers and wonders if they, too, had once fallen from the stars — 🌟
