I wrote this song wishing for my best friend's happiness. A year ago, I received wonderful news from her; I was overjoyed when I heard it, and that happiness grew even stronger by the next morning. As I sat on the beach playing my guitar, melodies came pouring out like a spring. It took me about a year to complete the song. Coincidentally, just as I finished writing it, I received word that she had found even greater happiness. I hope this happiness lasts forever.

A New Beginning

I have been a member of Boondockers Welcome since 2018—a worldwide network of hosts and travelers who open their properties to fellow members at no charge. Over the years I have welcomed more than fifty travelers to my property in Pensacola, earning the designation of Extraordinaire Host. In all that time I have personally stayed with fewer than a dozen hosts across several states. Each one has been memorable in its own way. None quite like this.

I pulled into Harrisonville, Missouri, on a road trip through the Ozarks and was welcomed by a middle-aged doctor and his wife. He had already given notice at the local clinic. The decision had been made, the life designed, and what remained was simply the living of it.

Three hundred acres of Missouri hill country. Cattle grazing the rolling pasture, sheep in the meadow, chickens scratching by the old oak trees, hunting dogs working the property with their noses to the ground. And on the hill, a barndominium—steel-framed, solar-powered, with Tesla Powerwalls storing the day's sunlight for the night ahead. Modern and rooted at the same time.

I spent several days with them. By the time I left I had a song.

He's heard it. He loves it. I haven't named him—this is his story to tell on his own terms—but I hope the song does justice to what I witnessed: a man who knew exactly what he wanted and built it, piece by careful piece, on a hillside in the Missouri Ozarks.
