I know I have a pretty privileged life, but at the end of 2014, it felt like it completely collapsed. I dropped out of the PhD program at MIT, my girlfriend and I broke up, and Marco told me he didn't want to play in Congratulations anymore. It felt like all the pillars in my life were pulled out from under me at once. That winter, it snowed more than any other in Boston's recorded history. I had a mental breakdown and got to the point I couldn't sleep and had to take anxiety medication to even function.



Slowly but surely, the power of music began to pull me out of this. I learned to Salsa dance. I recorded on my own. I cried at night for no reason or sometimes because I missed her so badly but I found solace in West African rhythm and the heartbreak of Bachata music.



Eventually as I started to get back on my feet, the band started to reunite. Then one day, just as Spring was starting, this song came out spontaneously in a jam. We started to gain momentum as a band and gain a following in Cambridge, playing this song at every single one of our shows. Slowly I started to realize that my personal low was incredibly valuable and the pain I had experienced was because of the love I had for my band, my girlfriend and my family.



There is no real "Caroline", but it's a song about how even if someone (or something) breaks your heart, that is beautiful and incredibly valuable. You will forever carry a part of them with you. And you are more alive for letting yourself have gotten hurt like that.



This is the first official single from our album, “Don’t Fade”, which is a reminder to burn bright and let your heart show. See everyone next week at the release party under the Perseids Meteor Shower!
