Retaining the minimal nature of the hip hop original, the half time intro draws you in: Metropolis spits his fire bars before it twists and switches into a techy, bass driven beast. Some of the rowdiest drum 'n' bass of the last five years has come courtesy of Austrian producer Mefjus (pictured). 

Tilt Recordings, Mindtech and Disturbed were a few of the labels his earliest work was released on and in 2012 he hooked up with tech-infected d'n'b purveyors Critical Recordings for the first time. That was the cutthroat Enei collaboration 'Crawlers' and he released his debut album, 'Emulation', on the Kasra-founded imprint last year.

Imagine yourself taken from the ones you love, stolen away from the life you know to be dragged into a world of mental manipulation and mind fuckery. What if they try and convince you you're insane? And you're so disassociated you don't even know if they're right?

BROADMOOR BLUES takes us on a voyeuristic journey back to a time when the life of the rebellious underdog could be so easily crushed under the mainstream idea of what was a 'normal' way to think and feel. Back to a time when the cages and trappings of society were literal and you could be locked up for even daring to question the status quo. The struggle of the outsider. It treads carefully along the lines of social stability to weave a tale of someone drowning in a world of dominance and corruption. The same corruption that still dehumanises us all to this day. The eternal evil that makes you doubt yourself and your own sanity. The cages are more insidious and psychological now but the stigma is just as real.

Our song begins with a melancholic ode to inner struggle as disjointed voices ripple over the understated acoustic guitar riff, a glimpse into an already fractured psyche, someone very much on the edge.. It's the sound of uncomfortably warm summer evenings watching the world flicker and glitch through a tapestry of reinforced glass and iron bars... So close to collapsing under the weight of the monster it has created... and you feel powerless to stop it. A looping vocal mantra of self affirmation drags us into the drop as all walls come crashing down and the birth scream of inner realisation stands up to be heard. A tearing bassline soars over pounding, primal drum patterns and subtle vocal snippets keep the raw, exposed soul of the story at the forefront of your mind.

THE SECT use little melodic flourishes to emphasise the fragility of the vocal which creates an emotive orchestral intro to ease you into the insane bass line as it screams away over a driving tech workout.

Agressor Bunx have been setting the standard recently. Whether it's on seminal drum & bass imprint Ram Records, or the underground torch holder Eatbrain, they've settled themselves within the discography of every major label running the game. And they're about to return with four fresh cuts which bring some serious heat, once again platforming the cut throat sound which has made them so infamous.

‘The Curse' EP, out on innovative imprint Ignescent Recordings, stands as both a pivotal release for both artist and label. Founded in 2015, they're beginning to push their way into a league with the heavyweights and with the help of Agressor Bunx, it's not difficult to see why. Already making their mark with Ukrainian underground figures such as NickBee, Ignescent have slowly been refining their sound; this next title proves their stature.

Title-track ‘The Curse' throws you synapses first through a wormhole of fury, featuring a soundtrack of mean bass and crispy drums. With a hook that grabs you on first listen, it accelerates during the intro before allowing you to freefall through constructed chaos. Dirty, dark and filled with neurofunk vibes, it exposes a production standard which has ensured their notoriety.

Next up, ‘Scream' shadows the same pattern, cranking up the gears and taking you into even shadier depths. However, instead throwing out an incessant hook, its thrashing drum patterns drag you through an arrangement heightened by each break. Agressor Bunx punches through to your musical receptors, taking them hostage and leaving you unable to escape their grasp.

Reminiscing on the older times, ‘Déjà vu' follows suit. Steeped in jungle-esque breakdowns, it's different from the vast range of production they've showcased. With precise form, they hit again and again with seismic results. Growling reeses pedal you even further into the fire, letting their deadly intentions take hold.

And finally, comes ‘Overwatch'… Its stabs and blaring subs stand out clearly, gradually building a foundation of infallible weight. They revert yet again to a style which reciprocates the old school, showing that despite their contemporary reign over neuro, they're also well read on their history. It's this background which has enabled them to surge forward, a movement which isn't looking to be stopped anytime soon.

A-side 'Twisted' opens with a heavy halftime drum line and the unmistakeable vocals of rising MC YDott, building into a heavy neuro drop of modulated bass and rolling drums. An understated but rhythmic musical hook punctuates the beats and bass nicely on a track that fuses hip-hop and D&B for maximum impact.

An observer stood upon a rooftop, gazing out over the metropolis that shimmered beneath him. To all outward appearances, it was an idyllic landscape. Busy & bustling, sure, but in ways that spoke of efficiency and the success of their kind. To them, it was a monument to their collective greatness that they could construct the steel-boned monoliths that reached upward to the heavens, but for the lone rooftop figure, a very different view was laid out below. His gaze cut through the superficial, and saw the city for what it truly was: a TORN PLACE.

Within his eyes those same monoliths represented not success in their glittering facades, but rather the greed, avarice, and corruption of those who dwelled within. He saw the rampant struggle to reach their peaks, the drive to triumph over one another, that also drove its champions to madness as they buckled under the weight of what they had done. As his gaze fell downwards the observer saw the destitute prostrate themselves upon the city’s streets, forced by some cruel twist of fate or the actions of those whom had climbed above. They gathered on these avenues as plaque within veins, their continued accumulation a warning sign of the city’s impending cardiac arrest. Alongside them streamed endless waves of vehicles, emitting choking clouds of black filth that spiralled into the air. So constant were they, that day and night a smog hung above the city, a poison that hung as a sword above all. As the observer took in these things, the city itself seemed to morph before his very eyes, changing its form in accordance with its monstrous nature. Faces upon billboards became malevolent visages with gaping mouths stretched wide in hunger. The towers, once glittering, unfurled before him like the tendrils of some primordial behemoth. All rushed towards him, consuming him within an endless expanse of darkness which was dispelled a moment later. The observer stood once more upon the rooftop, and the city shimmered once more beneath him. But for he who had seen its true nature, it could never be home again.

FOURWARD return to EATBRAIN with the TORN PLACE EP, their second release following their breakout Wolfe EP on the imprint. The four tracks within feature their sound in full, with the titular TORN PLACE providing grounds for it alone whilst other tracks feature a who’s-who of fellow heavy hitters on the EATBRAIN lineup. TORN PLACE opens the EP with cinematic flair, in which otherwordly narration and frantic basses occupy space in equal measure. FOURWARD combine with eatbrain bossman JADE on MAKE SOME, a driving track that pushes forward on the constant report of its stabbing bassline. REDPILL brings his horror infused sound to the table with DIGEST, a collaboration that calls on the pairing’s jump up influences amongst sinister saws. ELBOW features the sounds of L 33 alongside the FOURWARD crew and rises upon booming percussion before launching into a peak section of mechanized highs and rumbling lows. With the TORN PLACE EP, FOURWARD launch their multifaceted sound further onwards and upwards.

2003 was the year Red Light Records established itself. Since then, Optiv – one of Cause4Concern’s leading members – has drawn upon the vast array of producers who landed in his inbox to deliver crushing content for some of the biggest DJs in drum & bass. As a result, Optiv and the decade in which Red Light has been releasing music has ensured both newcomers and more established names are getting to the most imperative tastemakers. Their ‘Compound’ EP compilation series has seen Optiv provide a milestone in the careers of many burgeoning producers, which is why its second instalment will be another breakdown of the artists who both inspire Optiv, his sets and the music which makes up the core of Red Light Records ethos. 

The refined grooves of ‘Dymatize’ from Manta and Kaiza demonstrates how despite being known for their painstakingly honed, cut-throat records, Red Light Records’ output still appeals to the dancefloor. Similarly, Humanon and Victim join forces on ‘Liquid Glass’, diced up through its waif-like synthesis and clapping drum relays. Kodin’s ‘Keep Up’ takes you down a different route, with 90s-rave lead stabs and split vocal samples. The tinkering hi-hats and bass-heavy distortion of Xeomi and Kaiza’s ‘Lapse’ is just as destructive through its own means. Then the illusive introduction of Wresker and Kilobite’s ‘Fanatic’ pulls you into an almighty breakdown, one with rattling percussive snaps which push you directly through each set of flipping beats. Humanon returns again alongside Loop Stepwalker for ‘Octopus’, with every peaking set of notes helping to manufacture a hook that fully captures your attention. The track’s breakdowns are fast and furious, leading to this track becoming a sure-fire anthem in upcoming DJ sets. 

Art1fact, Kaiza and Tomtek follow suit with ‘Insidious’, just as heavy-hitting with its thumping sequences and warbling bass notes. Suspended amongst a web of cables was a woman who stood upon the very precipice of humanity. Skin shared equal space with metal upon the surface of her body, and within her mind, neurons fired alongside a wealth of transistors. Into this mind flowed an endless torrent of information transmitted through the arterial cables surrounding her. Indeed, it was an interesting question whether her body truly ended at the edges of her human form or if it enveloped the whole of the facility itself, for without such symbiosis neither entity could survive.

The woman’s existence was exemplary of an age old bargain brought violently into the future. In sacrificing her freedom to even move as she once did, the woman had acquired power unknowable to any other. From within the secret facility, the woman watched and listened to the city above through the vast network of cameras and sensors ever present in modern life. A modern mythological horror with a million eyes perched upon a web of her own knowledge, those select few who knew of her had given her a sinister name: The Spider. From her web she ruled from the shadows, her absolute knowledge operated upon by a network of agents in order to secure the desired outcome. They were her fangs, striking with speed and precision against any she deemed undesirable. From the shadows she poisoned the laws of the land, erasing or doctoring evidence to fit her specific narrative and paralyse any who would seek justice against her agents or come too close to discovering the truth. Her rule was absolute yet invisible, powerful yet without force. The city was hers and she was the city, for in her web all things were INTERLINKED.

TASK HORIZON return to EATBRAIN with the four track INTERLINKED EP, furthering their hi-tech drum & bass sound following the release of the Overclocking Reality EP on the label in February of 2018. The titular INTERLINKED leaps almost immediately into overdrive, surging forth from the gate with razor sharp basses and speeding percussion. Featured next is the IMMORTALITY PROTOCOL VIP, a reworking of their previous collaboration with MAGNETUDE that maintains the original’s cinematic atmosphere whilst warping its bassline into a sinister & swarming sonic texture. TASERFACE’s shocking syncopated rhythms impact with unparalleled power through their expression via devastatingly weaponised percussive elements. Closing the EP is TECHNOSH!T, which moves with steady pace as shimmering melodics float atop its motive beat. Calyx & TeeBee’s debut album ‘Anatomy’, released in 2007 on their own label was an instant game changer; cited as a landmark album for the scene ‘Anatomy’ saw the duo unleash an almighty wall of sound that rocked dance floors across the globe as they took to the road with their 6 deck DJ sets, smashing apart sound systems in nightclubs and festival tents alike.
