When the first human beings arrived in NZ, they found a forested land which abounded with birds. Many of which were flightless, and among these, one group stood out. Giants of the bird world, they were not only flightless, but also wingless, standing tall on their great, powerful legs and clad in a profusion of fine, hair like feathers. Even the smallest stood about a metre in height, while the tallest towered with neck at full stretch, to an incredible 3 metres - the tallest bird to ever live.

Today we call them, the MOA.
