Having been available exclusively as the second disc to 2015's 'Collaborative Works', Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm's improvised audio recordings 'Trance Frendz', taken from their 45-minute studio film of the same name, have been given their own vinyl release – out March 4th, 2016.

Prior to a string of collaborative Erased Tapes releases, which include 2012's 'Stare' 10” and last year’s 'Life Story Love and Glory' 7” and 'Loon' 12” – compiled on the 'Collaborative Works' 2-CD set, Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm spent many hours together in their studios across Berlin and Reykjavik. Both have carved out genre-defying musical careers and formed unique live shows, creating a fan base loyal to their prolific output.

During a session at Durton Studio in Berlin last summer, Nils and Ólafur invited Alexander Schneider and his camera to document it. The recording continued long after the first take, stretching out into the next day until, eventually, several new improvisations had been recorded in 8 hours with no overdubs or edits. The unexpected nature in which these pieces had been created was reminiscent of their first on-stage improvisation many years ago. It became immediately clear how special these songs were.

Originally made available as a 45-minute film on their joint website (www.arnaldsfrahm.com) last September, 'Trance Frendz' will be available to own on vinyl from March 4th, 2016.

her short life ended so suddenly and unexpected with only 20. beside the huge pain i experienced through her decision to leave, i think i can now say after years of thoughts and reflection, that it was also the event i learned the most of.

this day changed literally everything. it was the hardest reminder that we only have very limited time together, so early in life. it effected all my decisions, every breath is a deeper one since this day. i see with a clear mind and open heart now. it gave me more passion, the ability for self care, it strengthened my empathy & understanding and created a even stronger will to leave the world better than i found it.

i’m sharing this because i don’t want her to become forgotten and meaningless. so, this is what i learned. maybe you get something good from it, too.

be good to yourself. be good to people, even the ones you think that don’t deserve it. be kind to every other sentient being. everyone has her or his own invisible struggles, be aware of it and respect it. keep the people that don’t make you grow and keep you small out of your life. trust yourself, but be ready to question yourself, too. fight. try to find beauty in the saddest and darkest moments. don’t be surprised of change, because it will happen. don’t live a life of bad compromises, go for the whole. don’t fear insecurity. be more brave than you actually are.

What would it be if you make a piano sound like a harp? What an enchanting, dreamy vibration can it produce, a touch of fantasia. 

I had an exciting privilege to play this piano (invented and created by David Klavins @thepianoguy) in real life last summer. I am happy that I can play it again today in its "virtual" form (http://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/keys/una-corda/).

In a lot of ways, Aukai’s self-titled debut is the sound of Markus Sieber bringing his career full circle. Having spent part of the ’90s playing rock music in East Germany, the composer/multi-instrumentalist then shifted his focus to acting, only to have music creep back into his life after a mind-altering move to Mexico.

“This album and project has a lot to do with memories from travel,” explains Sieber, “but also memories from childhood and nature. How did the river smell in summer? I wanted to create a sonic space where music guides the listener into some imaginative inner world.”

Which explains why he came up with the name Aukai in the first place; it’s the Hawaiian word for a seafaring traveler, the sort of person who seeks out the stillness in uncertain waters. In the case of Sieber’s new record, that meant spending a winter holed up in a mountainside cabin around Colorado’s La Plata Canyon. Basic tracks were then cut in a Berlin studio and brought into full relief alongside cellist Anne Muller (Agnes Obel Band, Nils Frahm), violinist Bogdan Djukic, pianist Angelika Baumbach, sound designer Alexander Nickmann, and longtime collaborator Jamshied Sharifi (Laurie Anderson, Sting, Dream Theater).

Improv recorded late last night when I couldn't sleep. I'm not a fantastic pianist, so I hope this is ok.

3 AM

My father died on 16 March 2011.  His body had battled emphysema for years.  After complications caused by a bout of pneumonia he finally succumbed.  In the aftermath of these events I turned to my piano for solace and escape.  The resulting record attempts to address the emotions experienced during the 7 days between his death and funeral.  In collaboration with Ed Hamilton, who brilliantly tapped in to my experience and emotion, and with contributions from Christoph Berg, this record is about, and in memory of, my father. - Euan

"I started recording 'Kale Me' at my home studio while our washing machine was going wild in the bathroom. It sounded like a huge rave break. I instantly set up a microphone, recorded a full cycle and implemented it into the song. The washing machine stopped working right after the recording and never made any sound again. I was pretty lucky." – Daniel Brandt

Daniel Brandt, co-founder of Germany’s electroacoustic ensemble Brandt Brauer Frick, joins the Erased Tapes family with his solo debut album Eternal Something – released worldwide on March 24th 2017. 

What started off as a more simplistic idea soon evolved into something a lot more complex as the London and Berlin based music producer travelled across the world, experimenting with various other artists and different instruments. From his father’s cabin based in the German countryside with access to nothing but cymbals, to being surrounded by guitars in Joshua Tree, his unexpected journey soon progressed into what became his first solo album. 

Daniel played nearly all instruments himself with the only exception being fellow musicians Florian Juncker on trombone, Manu Delago on hang drum and Andreas Voss on cello. Using his Berlin studio as his main base for recording, Brandt created an album that encapsulates the idea that despite setting out with a particular creative vision, external influences and environments will always shift the process, and create an Eternal Something.

Words from Daniel, January 2017:

“The initial idea was to make a cymbal album. I wanted to surround myself with all types of cymbals. I locked myself into my father’s cabin in the woods for three days. That was the moment I realised it was not possible for me to make an album just with cymbals because other ideas and instruments imposed themselves on me. I had a clear sense of what I wanted to do now. The intention was to let the songs evolve by themselves and not edit too much, keep it raw and have an explosion-like energy to them. I wanted to create a different sound, songs that build up like dance tunes but don't feel like club music at all. Travelling around in California for two months gave me the possibility to deeply get into this concept outside my normal environment. Robert Raths, who served as a great motivator throughout the whole process (I guess he had listened to the record more than I ever had) came up with the perfect order for the songs. This record is about failing to make the original plan happen, but then the discovery of something I couldn't even think of before.”

Prior to being enlisted to create the album artwork, Iranian artist Shaz Madani coincidentally had also planned a trip to Joshua Tree where she documented her own experience of Eternal Something, forming the visual counterpart to the record.

The first publication of piano pieces by Erased Tapes composer and musician Peter Broderick features 20 works and an exclusive album of recordings plus unique notes from the composer.

In this, his first volume of sheet music, Peter Broderick collects 20 works for solo piano alongside exclusive new recordings. Taken from his piano-led records such as Docile, Float, How They Are, Partners and Grunewald, some are original solo works while others have been stripped back and arranged for solo piano for the first time. The collection also includes the composer’s performance and repertoire notes.

“Ever since I started releasing records of piano music back in 2007, it seems that every few months I get an email from a stranger, asking me if I have sheet music for my piano songs. Sometimes people even write to me assuming that the sheet music already exists, asking in regards to a particular song, “Where can I find the sheet music?” My response to all these requests has been always been the same . . . “Unfortunately the music is only written in my head and in my fingers, but I do hope that maybe one day I’ll be able to write some of it out and publish a book of sheet music.” And finally, ten years later, that day is here! I am very proud to announce that Piano Works Vol. 1, my first book of piano sheet music, will be available in mid-June. Thanks to my dear friends at Erased Tapes and Music Sales for helping this come to fruition.”  – Peter Broderick
