In this podcast, I discuss the process that Dr. Arun Ghosh went through to develop the first treatment-resistant HIV protease inhibitor drug. Dr. Ghosh is a current professor in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and his work has provided survival and increased quality of life for thousands of HIV patients. As a pharmacy major myself, I am endlessly inspired by Dr. Ghosh’s process and accomplishments. I describe the unique challenges to drug design, FDA approval, and the state of HIV treatment in the early 2000s when Dr. Ghosh developed this pharmaceutical. I included four C-SPAN clips relating to FDA approval, the mechanism of protease inhibitor action, and some HIV statistics in 2003. This podcast aimed to shed light on a Purdue figure who has contributed so significantly to global public health and the impact that one of his molecules, Darunavir, made.
