With France’s long-fallow club scene back in international resurgence as Paris storms back into fighting form, Europe now has found a new source for yet-unheard music. It was a long time brewing, but names like Concrete, Katapult, Zadig, and Society of Silence, have begun to appear in the international clubbing circuit, and the growth is not limited to the capital. Further south in Lyon, a city quickly gaining its own renown for busy club parties booking bigger names, there exists a smaller circle of energetic operators whose name is also spreading rapidly and whose recent accomplishments include Nuites Sonores, Boilerroom and more. Spearheaded by Kosme, a DJ and producer of quickly increasing notice, the provincial powerhouse has already turned heads throughout France as Kosmo’s Caramelo Records was snapped up by legendary Parisian distributor Syncrophone; he has a new label set to launch in 2014. It is with this background in mind that THEMA proudly offers Kosme’s international debut, the “April Moon” EP.

Kosme comes to the table with six tracks of low-slung Detroit-referencing house music laced with extra grit. “Fondamental” rides shuffling hats and a building acid line to dramatic heights. “Ever Shake Your Mind” is slower and dirtier yet, with crushed hats and a bottom-lurking bass between Theo Parrish-esque drum-machine-down-the-stairs breakdowns. After an interlude, “Mothafunka” resumes the beatdown with a talkover house track that escalates uncontrollably in intensity as drums shuffle before breaking down in congos & pads. “Deep Function” dials down to sexier sounds with sultry vocal samples and sampled hiss, but it doesn’t lose the drum kink. Finally the digital bonus “A Thought for Yvonne” is the most subdued and skeletal of all with echoed drums and a lonely bassline tumbling over each other in slow motion.

Following the explosion of new sounds from the capital, it is no surprise to find the movement spreading, and THEMA arrives first with the freshest France has to offer.

La Piragua es un standard de la cumbia latinoamericana, un pedazo de historia de la música tropical y se ha mantenido como una joya del folclore y la fiesta a nivel mundial. Es así como viaja hasta las tierras bajas de Holanda, donde se reconstruye con aires de dub y música de raíz en las manos de la banda Umoja.

Regional trae de vuelta esta pieza de arte a su región de origen, pasando en su camino por Francia donde Rafael Aragon la transforma en un swing house. Bigote en España rescata la cumbia dub digital, Tribilin Sound de Perú la lleva al sonido stepper, Ale Cassis le agrega beats futuristas desde Bolivia y La Reco Ganjah experimenta con un dembow espacial en Chile.

Todas conservando el sabor original de La Piragua de siempre, pero llevandola al siguiente nivel.

La Piragua is a latinamerican cumbia standard, a piece of history in tropical music and it has been delivered as a gem of the folklore and party worldwide. This way it travels all the way to the low land of Holland, where it gets reconstructed with touches of dub and roots music in the hands of the band Umoja.

Regional brings back this work of art to its origins, stopping on the way in France where Rafael Aragon transforms it to a swing house, Bigote in Spain recovers the cumbia in dub, Tribilin Sound from Peru takes it to the stepper sound, Ale Cassis adds some future beats from Bolivia and La Reco Ganjah experiments with spacial dembow in Chile.   

All of them conserve the original La Piragua flavour of always, but taking it to the next level.

Techno, an umbrella term for various styles of electronic music, can be characterized by an eschewing of narrative song structure and melodic content to focus on repetitive machine beats, usually with a steady 4/4 kick drum, snares on the 2, and a compulsive high hat in between.

A culture of mechanical anonymity and electronic universality, Techno purportedly embodies values from a post-human future, cut off entirely from the mess of our collective past. But reality of the music is the opposite: it came out of specific histories and locations, and is a direct product of both the 20th Century as well as much older rhythmic traditions from the mother continent.

Similar to older Afro-American styles like House, Disco, Funk, Soul, Motown, Rock, and Blues, the 4 on the floor beat emblematic of most techno is a good example of the duple rhythm, which became popular in America (and the world) from the legacy of slaves playing African percussion music without drums, with influence from European folk music. Fast forward to the 1980s, Africa Bambataa meeting Kraftwerk was a new chapter of fusion, and produced new strains of African rhythm mutation under new and specific circumstances. The simplicity of the 4/4 duple rhythm and machine sounds spoke to new generations raised in urban industrial settings, and part of its wide international appeal.

But in Techno African rhythm traditions survive and thrive, in mutant form, re-imagined and reconstructed based on earlier re-imagination and reconstructions. The brightest minds in modern electronic music have all made use of specifically African musical ideas and rhythm sensibilities, and IMHO, the best Techno is polyrhythmic, a reduced and streamlined version of African percussion. The music of the genre's most important innovators often includes off-kilter syncopation, beats falling not squarely on the grid, as well as different interlocking rhythms playing at the same tempo, such as 3/4 with 4/4. Often subtle in its interaction with the dominant duple beat, these percussive elements and dynamics are expressive of complex rhythmic sensibilities which are, if indirectly, unmistakably related to African traditions. Today it is no different, many of the brightest minds are making the deepest, hardest, most forward thinking and uncompromising underground Techno with, consciously or unconsciously, African rhythm ideas in mind. Synthesizers play the part of Djembes, bleeps and blurps are drum accents: the African-ness of these beat patterns may be more obvious to me and others who spend a lot of time with African music, but i think will also become apparent to anyone who has an open mind and really listen.

If dance music itself can be defined as the design of sound patterns according to, and for, the proportions and speeds of the human body - African traditions have had many tens or even hundreds of thousands of years to perfect exactly this. Techno is often said to be about "functionality" on the dance floor - for this reason it makes sense that the evolution of new dance music should increasingly look to Africa for inspiration.

This mix was made to demonstrate all of this, including legends like Underground Resistance and Jeff Mills, as well as later and present day innovators such as Surgeon, Ancient Methods, Redshape, Peter Van Hoeson, etc, with a sprinkling of samples from field recordings and traditional music from Africa. (It would have been too easy to include UK Funky and other kinds of new bass music, which are often even more explicitly Africanized, so i am keeping this one mostly genre specific.)

Born in Germany and then relocating to Russia to study and to start his musical career, Veimar found early inspiration from the likes of James Zabiela and similar artists who were pushing the boundaries of electronic music in the mid- to late 2000s. Having recently moved once again, this time to Bali, Veimar has recently released an EP on Matt Walsh’s Clouded Vision imprint, remixed tracks for Daniel Avery, Justin Robertson & Debukas, and has forthcoming releases on Darkroom Dubs, Startalk and Turbo Recordings.

Moby - Lie Down In Darkness (Chris Liebing Dub Remix)

The second instalment of remixes of Jamie Lloyd’s debut album Trouble Within come courtesy of the excellent Drumpoet Community collective from Switzerland. The Drumpoet releases have been getting high rotation in the Future Classic offices since the beginning and its a pleasure to again make a new connection between our base in Sydney and another part of the world.

The Soultourist boat is crewed by Philippe Wüger (Thabo), Tobi (Foster), Ron Shiller, and Pascal Dubach (Big Clap), with the rowing done in shifts. The four met while DJing and hanging out at parties realizing that their cases were packed with nearly the same records and that they shared a common musical vision. Soultourist's first 12" was released on the Sonar Kollektiv after which they have contributed releases to Swiss label Bit Boutique and now of course the newly founded Zürich based Drumpoet Community label with their excellent Yeah! and Turn Loose EP’s.

The Soultourist remix of Jamie Lloyd’s You Out or In? is all class, with the sort of immaculate production and clarity we’d expect from spending all that time at high altitude, or perhaps an Autumnal dip in Lake Zürich? The bass is tight, the drums crisp and there’s musicality throughout (including some awesome keys) which we applaud!

Quarion was moving from Zürich to Berlin while doing this remix, and he thinks the results are revealing of this move, with a deephouse take on the nu-wave-of-rave he was enjoying during his first weeks in Berlin. A rewarding addition to the box or laptop of any DJ who enjoyed his excellent Karusu EP on Drumpoet.. or perhaps an introduction to someone new to keep an eye on!
