The Georgian club scene may be small but it is perfectly formed. From the record stores to the clubs, after parties to record labels, there seems to be an effortless energy that emanates from this musical enclave that is nestled between Eastern European and Asia. There is undoubtedly European influences in the electronic music to be found there, but there is without a doubt an air of Asian cool. One of the driving forces is Small Moves, a record store, label, and party series that has grown to be recognised the world over for the insane curation and the DJ’s that make up this crew. Two of their driving forces are the pairing of Ika & Usherenko, a duo of artists that have made their way around the world with more than a few stop offs in the United States where they starred at legendary events such as ReSolute, Un_Mute, Flash, as well as stop offs south of the border too.

Excelling in ethereal grooves, the Georgian pairing of Small Moves artists Ika and Usherenko have a second sense of what works on the dancefloor but with a measured and mature side that few young DJ’s have at their disposal. Not to say that when these selectors always play it deep and cool as their recording for our podcast series will attest. With the lead into their edition stitching together sublime atmospherics and probing bassline it is not long before heavy hitting noise snares and punchier kicks herald a new phase in the mix. As with all good sonic tales, it is all about ebb and flow, and this mix undulates as does the energy of the tracks. For a taste of Tbilisi, make sure you add these artists and their carefully nurtured scene to your hit list when deciding on your next rave away from home.

It would seem that there was something in the water in Italy during the tail end of the 70s and the beginning of the 80s. We recently highlighted this via our recent Free Download artist, but another Italian artist who is just as influential is Francesco Farfa. Incredibly, he was already a working DJ by the early 80s and that was before the age of electronic music. This just meant when the advent of drum machines dawned across the music spectrum Francesco was already armed to the teeth with skills honed playing funk and disco when early proto-house began filtering through to Europe.
