The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

We have detected... PLANEMO! Every episode we hop aboard our spaceship and search the galaxy to discover fresh and exciting sounds for the people of earth...

This past November the stars collided to bring together Pelehon and GriffinGrrl on the decks. The atmosphere created was truly magical as these two ladies were connected by their love for deep and luscious sounds, but had not yet shared a dance floor. This set the stage for a beautiful night of musical storytelling. The energy in the room felt too infectious not to share, and since we weren’t recording, we decided to record and release our sets together for Planemo.

For the first hour tune in to the rhythms of GriffinGrrl. GriffinGrrl has been a fiery catalyst for creative collaborations since the 90s LA rave scene. With talents spanning from DJ, radio host, club co-founder, to current residencies held with Uniting Souls and LOST, GriffinGrrls magnetic energy continues to fuel countless amazing experiences. 

The second hour is curated by Pelehon, a Tremulant resident who began weaving stories through sound 3 years ago. Pelehon enjoys layering melodies and rhythms to provide a soundtrack to get lost in… believing that through music we can express and hear what speaks beyonds words.

Terry Farley takes the helm of the DJ Mag Podcast this week, delivering 90-minutes of music that showcases exactly where house music is at for the UK veteran in 2017. You can listen to it above.

Farley hits Farr Festival in Hertfordshire next month, as part of a line-up that includes Floating Points, Omar-S, Leon Vynehall, Todd Terje, Booka Shade and Honey Dijon, alongside Mister Saturday Night, Detroit Swindle, Axel Boman, DJ Tennis, Kornel Kovaks, Young Marco and many more.

Last year Farley’s three-hour 30 years of Boys Own set with Pete Heller at Farr Festival got one of the biggest crowd reactions of the weekend.

Through his career, Farley has been responsible for some of UK house music’s most enduring cuts. These have come under his own name, as well as Roach Motel, Bocca Juniors and as one half of Heller & Farley.

As a regular at Fabric and Ministry of Sound in London, he also continues to spin on the world’s most revered dancefloors. And it's easy to see why with his 90-minute 'That’s House 2017’ DJ Mag Podcast.

The mix includes music from DJ Pierre, The Revenge, Re.You, DJ T, KiNK, Deep Dish, Cozzy D and many more, and rides right through from deep and acid house to techier cuts.

Alex Banks is a DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist from Brighton, UK. Praised by the likes of BBC Radio 6, Mixmag, Clash and Uncut, he makes music aimed at the dancefloor that thrills with its sonic intricacy and warm human feeling.
His prismatic sound design decorates rhythms influenced by jungle, broken beat and dubstep, while techno effects hiss and clank, and off-world IDM melodies snake around the arrangements. Bank’s sound carries instantly recognisable motifs and an impressive quality. All the while he consistently pushes the envelope with an adept technical skill and sound design which commands repeated listens.
‘Projections’ is the title of Banks’ third studio album that is set for release on Max Cooper’s Mesh in summer 2022. Characterised by his passion for analogue gear and experimentation, the work is a pure distillation of his production expertise and love for emotive synth sounds. The project includes visual collaborations with award-winning motion graphic designer Matthew Clugston and Tosh Fieldsend from renowned VFX house The Mill.
His other work includes critically acclaimed releases on Modeselektor’s Monkeytown, Ninja Tune and Hunter/Game’s Just This. Remix credits have seen brilliant re-works of Bonobo, RY-X and Raven Bush. On the collaborative front Banks is just as selective, linking with Max Cooper and Sasha respectively, the latter set for an April release on LNOE as part of the ‘TEN’ compilation. 
A musical polymath, when not immersed in the electronic world, Banks works as a sound designer, composing for film, TV and advertising campaigns. Notable achievements include projects for Global brands such as Nike, Heineken and Honda. 
Alex Banks is entering a fresh and exciting chapter in 2022. A master craftsman in the studio pushing his sound into inspiring new directions, he'll augment the eclectic  'Projections' project on Mesh with a new live AV set up, taking his creative output to a new level.
