PREMIERE: The Checkup, DJ Merci - Ginrüb [Anxiety Therapy]

Idriss D officially launches the brand new label Nedjma with his own 2-vinyl, 8-track album as first release. The imprint will serve as a platform for up and coming talents from the Arabic world who are not represented in the current musical landscape. A very bold statement from Idriss himself, this record sees the Franco-Algerian dj and producer infuse his personal history into what he loves the most and share it with the rest of the world.
First track Tsakhbira works as the perfect opener for the album with a melodic ambient-like mood and Arabic chants, with second track Beld el fen following in the same vein with traditional instruments interspersed with synth stabs and eerie atmos.
Chazil’s upbeat rhythm spices up the vibe, a mix of ethereal singalongs and bouncy percussions. Mohamed is the first foray into Electronic territory, a downtempo piece featuring French vocals and plenty of analog industrial clanks that lead into subsequent Hey Galbi, an exquisite melodic house number with acid synth melodies and piano keys.
Electro (Leila Moon Remix) delves into more experimental landscapes, with darker tones, blurred vocals and pulsating beats, while Elf Leila is quintessential Electroclash Arabic music, blending these two genres together, with a syncopated super catchy bassline. Closing track Harramt is a whirlwind of snare rolls, 303 arpeggios and nods to North African heritage sounds.

Jet-setting DJ/producer/songwriter Megatronic drops her first solo single from a forthcoming Razor-N-Tape EP with ‘The World’. A sultry and soulful club track featuring vocals by Stavros.
Following on a previous collab release as SMTHING SMTHING (with Aussie Ed Seven) on RNT’s Family Affair compilation series, and with releases on Melvo Baptiste’s blueprint label The Remedy, Turntables On The Hudson, and more, the UK native has been establishing her brand of forward-thinking soulful club song-smithery. With its deep and moody chords, a slowly building arpeggiated synth line, and an irresistibly catchy repeated vocal ‘The World’ is Meg’s most refined statement yet.

Graced from the get-go, 'Blessed' kicks off with an inspirational snippet of speech and gritty drum loop, opening out into the beginnings of this lovestruck summertime heater. Morphing from hip-hop breakbeat into chunky deep house groove, the hypnotic bassline and muted guitar, give a jazz-tinged flavour to 'Blessed'. Third Attempt keeps that live feeling rolling throughout, layering chopped R&B vocals and shimmering keys to add to the ever-infectious vibe.

As well-equipped at soundtracking the hazy hues of a sunset, as it is powering a dancefloor at peak time, 'Blessed' is warmth and weight in equal measure, served up in signature Third Attempt style.

On the latest Robot 84 release, producer Scott Ferguson showcases all of the progressive and groove related qualities which have made his records so celebrated and enjoyed across the globe - from the Balearic Isles to the club, and beyond….

Ferguson’s journey in music reads like a glorious mind map of places, spaces and people, with the tale starting off Djing at some of the best nights in Scotland alongside co-owning Defunkt Records in Glasgow. His production career started in early 2000, and after a number of releases under various aliases he released the much celebrated ‘Welcome to the Pleasuredome’ edit in 2013, the first release under the ROBOT 84 name. The vibe of the ROBOT84 name is that of eclectic Balearic-ness, with Ferguson keen to never stick to one particular style, but as a means of constantly evolving and exploring through music production - akin to the sound he looks to evoke whilst Doing. The joy of Ferguson’s music is that constant convergence of sounds and moods, and this has provided listeners with consistent delight as they dive deeper into his soundscapes. This led to him releasing music with a number of top quality labels, including Secret Life, Nervous, Paper, Is It Balearic and Midnight Riot. In 2019, Ferguson founded the ROBOT84 imprint, with a succession of excellent records coming out the door that further enamoured listeners to his music - as varied, distinct and well crafted as ever.

‘Cosmic Accident’ encapsulates all that makes Fergusons discography so varied, with a significant shift into the realms of House and Disco filled to the brim with groove laden rhythms, inspired vocal samples and emotive melodic overtones. The ‘Full Vocal’ version features the echoing words of Martin Luther King Jr laid over a simmering sea of instrumentation, that works from the undertow up through to the highest peak. The opening salvo features a looping synth buzz that gets the track revved up, with the breakdown moments introducing some inspired piano notes, drifting down just for a moment before leaning heavily into the core groove. The halfway mark provides a longer dip into the key swing, as the melodic lines evolve into a delicate weaving of textures and feeling. The ‘Dubbed Out’ version points the focus at the core synth move, with the track taking its time to introduce the delicate instrumentation, which when it hits provides a proper hands in the air moment. A wonderful flip side version for a single release you will be hearing a lot of in the coming months.

So why not take a little trip into the cosmos, with this most groove laden of dance music experiences, and get lots within the synths and tones - its quite the atmosphere to get deep within…..

The bond between Sprechen & Black Hawks of Panama is a long one which started when Danny Whitehead (aka Black Hawks) gave Sprechen’s Chris Massey his very first ever DJ gig after he won a local DJ competition in sunny Bolton many moons ago! Skip forward a good 20 odd years and things have now gone full circle with a 2nd release dropping on Sprechen by Black Hawks of Panama and it’s another absolute top shelf discotheque rocker of seismic proportions.

Discoteca-Bisteca slaps from the very get go with the pump-o-meter cranked up to 11! Filtered diva vocals, trippy synth lines and a chest thumping bass line all of which builds & builds & builds before dropping into some serious filtered breakdown action. You know when you need to choose your first track to play when taking over from the warmup to announce your arrival? This is it!

Primero tips the hat to one of the most well-known Italo disco tracks to ever strike fear into anyone that is thinking of smuggling. Lovingly reworked and given the Black Hawks treatment for maximum dance floor igniting when you need to drop a secret weapon. This one does it all…big stuff indeed!

Lumberjacks in Hell is easily one of my favourite labels since LV launched. Marcel Vogel's labour of love delivered a near endless list of incredible timeless music before taking a break over the pandemic. Thankfully after a two and half year hiatus it's now fully re-invigorated and has a stream of tight releases heading our way and we are definitely here for that.

Hot Molten Lava is a collaboration between creative powerhouses Lu/Lu and Lyma, the latter also a co-collaborator of Marcel's on his recent brilliant Boogie Angst releases. Packing in 7 tracks the EP both showcases their considerable creative chops and also the direction of Lumberjacks in Hell for 2024.

Our premier today from the EP is the enigmatic 'Can't Stop Overthinking'. It's equal parts euphoric, enthralling and utterly delicious.
