ROSEtape Vol. 08 | HANS NIESWANDT

2013 marks a decade of Y-3 and its pioneering sport-style aesthetic—a look that continues to meld the avant-garde genius of Yohji Yamamoto with the breakthrough innovation of adidas. adidas is pleased to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Y-3 with a compilation album in collaboration with Alex Prat aka Alex from Tokyo (Tokyo Black Star, World Famous NYC) and 14 innovative electronic music producers, with CD and vinyl sets specially packaged with artwork by PL Studio.

Y-3 presaged the contemporary obsession with designer athletic wear by being the first to blur the boundaries of style and sport. The music on this compilation achieves a similar balance, bringing together dance music icons as well as fresh faces from the world of underground house and disco.

The esteemed contributors include Frank Wiedemann, one half of acclaimed duo Âme and co-founder of Berlin-based label Innervisions. Eccentric and reclusive maven Maurice Fulton makes a rare appearance, along with legendarily diverse New York DJ Joaquin "Joe" Claussell of the famed Body & Soul parties as well as Chicago house pioneer Larry Heard. Rub-N-Tug are a boisterous New York duo, and here they slot next to Jules Etienne's collaboration with disco purist Daniel Wang, founder of Balihu Records
Other artists on the compilation include Blackjoy, responsible for Parisian sci-fi disco, prolific Japanese producer Kaoru Inoue aka Chari Chari, Irish house heavyweight Mano Le tough, and Jiro Amimoto, who has produced the music at previous Y-3 runway shows. Discodromo, who heads up one of Berlin's top gay alternative parties Cocktail D'Amore, collaborates here with Italian Massimiliano Pagliara, a longtime resident at Frankfurt's Robert Johnson nightclub. Alex from Tokyo pulls double-duty, contributing a track from his and Isao Kumano's Tokyo Black Star project as well as mixing the CD version of the release. Rounding out the mix is anonymous Scottish producer Lord of the Isles and Quiet Village, featuring Matt "Radio Slave" Edwards.

The Y-3 compilation will be released in mid-September via the Y-3 website (www.y-3.com/music), retail stores, and social media outlets. The compilation will be available on CD with the tracks both mixed continuously or unmixed, along with 500 special-edition vinyl box sets and free digital downloads.

Sunday Morning is a mix series dedicated to pushing artists and labels who intend on pursuing the beauty in downtempo/chill-wave music. The focus is centered on experimental yet eloquent productions. This mix series is made in order to wind down and relax after a long night out, or simply listen to something other than dance music. I grew up with record labels like M3rck and Schematic based out of Miami, and have always searched for mixes which included these sort of sounds after a long weekend of traveling. Having not found many, I decided to make this a bi-weekly ongoing series including guest mixes.

The rumble of runout kinks on car tires knocks Coop awake to find himself veering at 65 mph on the 101 going south... For an Angelino, this isn’t quite as shocking as you would think, he merely adjusts the wheel and notches the music up to buy him another 20 minutes of consciousness. Cooper much more prefers the rhythm of cement cracks on skate wheels to what he just heard. Although, that doesn’t mean he can’t hang with a good autobahnger, he just cut his teeth on the pedestrian side of the street before making it to those licensed required roads. You don’t fall asleep on a half-pipe. The lip of his board, sitting upright in the backseat winks at him through the rear-view... “Wait, am I still high?” He's driving home, alone. There were some options for company, but after being at the venue for 18 hours you lose that taste to afterparty. There really isn’t much left to celebrate, sleep is now your reward, as long as it doesn’t kill you or anyone else on the drive home. "Wait, did I grab my E&S? Shit!" The phone brightness is like a strobe effect on the car interior, he has to shoulder through texts of “where you at bro?” to get to his sound guy. The song that comes on unnecessarily tightens the stress of this menial task... There is already a message waiting for him saying: “Amazing night tonight dude, DJs were all super happy, I will bring your mixer by tomorrow - she is safe.” The music goes up one more notch. We are awake now.

HNYPOT 245: Cooper Saver's Afterhours on the 101 South

Last summer, i was asked to play a “beatless” set at Stella Polaris in Copenhagen. I didn’t even believe the mandate. The instructions were clear, if bizarre,… NO dancing. 
After the tyranny/fun of 25 years of making people dance, i felt an incredible freedom and joy in this most basic of requests….. and ended up having a truly magical time, in the sunshine, outdoors in a park in Copenhagen with 25000 people sitting on that grass (including Daniel Miller). There were a handful of records that i had never played before, but always wanted to….. one of my favorites from The KLF “Chill Out” album, a seminal This Mortal Coil song from the early 90s rave days, and a Kate Bush song that is a personal anthem. many of these being my all-time favourites songs.. When i closed with “Under The Ivy” i actually had a tear in my eye (a first) …just to feel the power of music, and the rush or joy and relief and, yes, LOVE for these songs that have chronicled  my entire life. 

and of course i found it IMPOSSIBLE to not throw a few dance beats in there……i am hopeless. beyond salvation.
