Within the maze-like passageways of the organization’s most secure facility lay a block of cells custom forged to contain the eldritch powers of their aberrant inhabitants. Some bore robust electrokinetic plating on their walls to prevent their inhabitants from simply phasing through their containment, whilst others opted for amplified versions of more traditional carceral methodology, locking their subjects behind foot-thick doors of depleted uranium and litany of layered locks to keep the horrors that resided within them at bay. Amidst this labyrinth, one cell alone seemed strangely conventional, but behind its bars lay an anomalous being more sinister than any with which it shared this ward.

On a purely physical consideration, the subject was by the hallmark of its species, a towering ursine figure that rippled with musculature developed by its myriad successful hunts. Tooth and claw were honed to perfection for that self-same savage purpose, and even the beast’s oaken fur seemed to be sharpened by the bear’s pure predatory instinct. Yet the creature was not the only inhabitant of its cell, as coursing through its veins was another organism of lesser stature but perhaps greater danger. Its viral influence had overtaken the beast’s brain, and in exchange, it had tripled the creature’s strength and imbued it with unending ravenous hunger. That selfsame virus now lay within the acrid saliva that dripped from the subject’s jaws, and posed a threat far greater than that of the simple mauling that its host could well deliver. For once its host had finished with its prey, the virus would reconstitute their remains under its own control, adding another hungry mouth to the ravenous swarm it sought to grow. As each took another life, the virus’s influence would only grow, until it had the entire world ENSNARED under it singular influence.

With ENSNARED, AKOV returns triumphantly to EATBRAIN with his latest selection of infectious Neurofunk sonics, which are set to whip the label’s horde into a frenzy on the basis of their pure primal power. Within, AKOV’s signature twisted basslines are applied to rapid percussive sequences amidst a variety of texture pads for the creation of four tracks guaranteed to rend their way into the ears of unsuspecting listeners.

Completely engulfing, intense, intricate and dark, his sound can be described as visceral, schizophrenic bass music. His talent hasn’t gone unnoticed across the borders of his home country, he has become a regular fixture on Noisia podcasts as well as releases on labels as diverse as Buygore and Close 2 Death.

The EP kicks off with Futile Condition. A textured intro complete with bird sounds lead into a pounding drop with a pulsating midrange hook.

The name ‘Odyssey’ is apt from an LP which explores the full musical world which The Clamps has built around his art. And alongside Kosen Production, he’s about to unleash a collection of records that is a full spectrum look of what he’s achieved over his career, one which has spanned the neurofunk genre and helped provide some of its most unforgiving, yet refined sounds. Stretching across fifteen tracks, mainly falling within the techstep and neurofunk categories, there’s a host of featuring artists which help to platform the network he’s built through his music, from Nuklear MC, Impak, Merikan, Mizo to Nickbee. Due to drop in September, Kosen Productions - one of the leading independent imprints pushing up through its competition - is set to release its first teaser. It comes in the form of ‘Mankind / Soul of the Abyss’. ‘Mankind’ is a sonic rendition of humanity’s dark side, setting the scene of the world going mad, whilst ‘Soul of the Abyss’ focuses more on the depression, juxtaposing the track’s more melancholy parts with its more aggressive elements.

‘Mankind’ creates a landscape which is snapping and unforgiving, one which slowly drags you in like quicksand. The Clamps isn’t afraid to search for new and exciting avenues for his music, which is shown throughout ‘Mankind’. Its foreboding intro sets the scene and bit by bit you’re gradually pulled into the chaos. ‘Soul of the Abyss’ is more deeply menacing; a brooding concoction of throbbing drum peddles, crackling LFOs and peaked stabs of bass. Whilst still pushing the same underground feel as its forerunner, The Clamps doesn’t mince his intentions, cutting forward with the precision and snapping jaws which are still part of the track’s more understated composition. Yet it still causes as much of an impact and that’s why this package provides an intriguing opener of what The Clamps is about to unleash. He has a talent at his disposal which has been proven time and time again, meaning that the anticipation around the album will only begin to rise. Its world is chaotic as The Clamps has ever been.

The REANIMATOR sat frozen in his chair, held spellbound by the stygian gaze of his newest creation. Within the onyx depths of her eyes there was something new, something different, a quality not present in his other works. As she began to rise, he studied her movements with a mix of pride and abject terror. Before him stood his greatest creation, a life truly brought back from beyond that most final veil. She did not lurch with the brutish inhumanity of her predecessors, but rather her movements flowed with a equally inhuman grace that transcended her monstrous form. Her pallid skin and jet black hair projected an aura of unnatural beauty, taboo and forbidden by nature of her construction, yet still undeniable in its existence. Though she did not speak, there was an intent within her gaze. It was cold & alien, dipping into the edge of human comprehension but not truly existing within it. It was this aspect that set the fear surging within him. His other creations had by comparison been parodies of life, their animalistic wants and desires well within his ability to control. It was clear this was no longer the case. The meeting of their gaze created a palpable tension, a physical collision of analogous thought. The pair regarded each other as duelists, testing, probing, each searching for a moment of weakness hidden beneath the blank demeanor of their foe. Slowly, the REANIMATOR began to regain his strength, rising from his chair with newfound courage. This courage dissolved once more as he watched his creation rise in mimicry, his own movements mirrored upon her body like a marionette but for one difference. A wry grin spread slowly across her lips, illuminating that this was not merely mimicry, but mockery instead. The REANIMATOR took one step back, then another, before finally flinging himself towards his tools, fanatically searching amongst them for any that would offer salvation from the eldritch horror he had created. He turned, lashing out with a scalpel held in his trembling hand. The blade bit into the cheek of his creation as he marred her uncanny beauty in an admission of his own failure. For a brief moment, the REANIMATOR saw something new within her onyx eyes, a pain wrought by the betrayal of he who had given her a simulacrum of life. He faltered in momentary regret, empathetic of the pain which he had inflicted until he too felt a pain upon himself. Gone from his hand was the means of his betrayal, and upon his coat there lay a stain. Across his neck, a gash spread slowly, just as his creation’s grin had moments before. This time however, the slow spread of such a line was indicative not of the budding existence of a life but of the creeping end of one. His strength faltering, the REANIMATOR looked once more into the eyes of his creation. Gone was the look of pained betrayal, replaced once more by that cold & inhuman gaze. Delivered by the hand of his own work to the level of the clay from which he wrought his creations, the REANIMATOR fell to the ground with finality.

Their greatest triumphs, their most harrowing failures, the beginnings and endings of their myriad tales: all such were born of the fleeting desires of the being which lay beyond their minuscule conception.

Those minuscule creatures had given the being many names in their many languages and portrayed its form in innumerable fashions, each uniquely fantastic and decidedly far from the truth. The being cared not of these misinterpretations however, finding instead a humor in their inability to even scratch at the surface of its incomprehensible existence. Its true title was after all for them impossible to pronounce, and thus the being held a detached amusement for the names it had been given. In times long past it had been fate, providence and even kismet, but in this new age of their world such archaic titles held little meaning, and the being styled itself around a term it found most peculiar, guiding their world under the name of SELECTA.

NAIS makes his EATBRAIN debut with the SELECTA EP as he continues his meteoric rise in the Drum & Bass scene. Hailing from Russia, NAIS has delivered recent releases across labels such as Playaz Recordings and Kosenprod, as well as collaborations with longstanding heavyweights such as the TEDDY KILLERZ and forthcoming material on RAM Records.
