THE EYE OF TIME is the Solo-Project of French musician Marc Euvrie. Euvrie’s musical development is deeply connected with the French DIY punk and hardcore scene, though he has been classically trained as well. He used to play in several bands before he began to translate his personal reflection of our complex world into music, which initiated The Eye of Time. A self titled debut record, released in Spring 2012, evolved firstly.

For his debut Marc Euvrie’s critical writing exposed a dark look on the present, past and future: Linked to machines and samples, revealing an unnatural direction of the human being’s existence. His upcoming release ACOUSTIC is a consequent change of focus. Looking for the motor, the personal needs to survive, he found himself experimenting with only Cello and Piano. Apparently these classical instruments turned out to be a relevant strong signal to go back to the roots with something more natural and simple to start from. Though both records seem to go in opposite directions in terms of sound and concept, a strong underlying layer stays inevitable: The Eye of Time’s compositions imply a call to fight for the things we love.

ACOUSTIC might be understood as a counterbalance to The Eye of Time’s debut. Where the previous record disclosed the coldness of our time, destructing everything that is meant to be our deep nature and presenting the despair of our situation, Acoustic embarks on a little glimpse of hope: Finding some strength to keep fighting for the nature of things and their vital qualities. Marc Euvrie composed six songs for six different locations and points in time, reaching way back to ancient centuries as well as taking a glance into our near future of a yet unknown place. A very personal travel through time and space, between the beauty of nature (Cisjordania, Norway) and the need of hope, which allows humans to dream (Spain, Poland). Marc Euvries own feelings and thoughts about his life evoke mostly in the last two tracks, where he found a form to intensify what keeps him alive.

For the first half of the twentieth century, Ellis Island stood as the gateway to America. For some twelve million people, it was their first encounter with the land they hoped to call home. 

Directed by acclaimed artist JR, ELLIS tells the story of one such migrant. Starring Robert De Niro, the film winds its way through the crumbling hallways of the abandoned Ellis Island hospital complex, now home to JR’s Unframed art installation. It’s a place that reverberates with the hopes and fears of those who passed through it, the echoes especially resonant today.

Entwined with the narrative is a score composed by Woodkid, performed and co-written by Nils Frahm. The delicate piano motifs of Winter Morning I culminate in a crescendo of strings, while the harmonium swells on the B-side are the foundation for De Niro’s narration: an encomium for those who shaped modern America. 

There’s perhaps never been a more fitting time for this story, with all the proceeds going to the Sea Watch initiative, a non-profit charity dedicated to the protection and rescue of civilian refugees. 

Following a screening as part of Nils’s Barbican Weekender, the ELLIS score will be out July 8th, the same week as America’s great federal holiday. It will be available via Erased Tapes as a mini album on CD, vinyl and in digital format containing a 12-page picture booklet.


IN THE ARTISTS’ OWN WORDS:

Nils Frahm: ‘The opportunity to work on JR´s fantastic short film ELLIS came through my good friend Yoann aka Woodkid. We agreed on recording the piano parts in my studio in Berlin and so it happened that JR and Woodkid were guests at Durton studio on a wonderful late summer day in 2015. We managed to record all the crucial elements that day. The music fell in our laps and melted with the images: a wonderful experience. The film has stuck in my head ever since; it moved my heart and changed my soul.

A couple of weeks later I had to cancel a trip to Brussels because of a terror warning; all events got cancelled and I stayed home, having an unexpected day off. I felt rather depressed that day, thinking that the Europe I knew was already gone. I sat down at the harmonium, listened to Robert De Niro’s voice and played for the rest of the day. The result is ‘Winter Morning II,’ the B-side of the ELLIS soundtrack release.

Robert says it all in 17 minutes. We are not facing a refugee crisis. We are facing a crisis because we do not embrace, we do not sympathise and we cannot give up fear. Art can encourage so I hope this project will help fight the fear in all of us.’

Yoann Lemoine, aka Woodkid:  ‘Ellis is my second collaboration with JR after the New York City Ballet piece for Les Bosquets. I initially wanted this piece to sound like it was recorded on an old piano that we found in the ruins of Ellis Island, in the restricted area that is not open to the public, where JR pasted the pictures on the walls for the film Ellis.

I had worked with Nils before and I wanted him to create a sound for this piano part that I composed that was extremely gentle and organic. I wanted the listener to hear the mechanisms, the breathing of the instrument. I wanted it to be imperfect, to sound like a ruin, a trace, an echo, the way the pastings on the walls seem to be ghosts, almost imperceptible.

After a few rehearsals, Nils stripped down my piano parts and we removed almost all orchestration around the piano. He then worked on the extended version that is his interpretation of my piece, with Robert de Niro’s vocals.

Because this film and this recording is historically meaningful, it was important for us to create this piece as an echo to the immigration situation in Europe, and decided to release it in support of Sea Watch.’

سلام. یارو دکتر خوش تیپه گفته به هر کی میرسم نگم سلام، ولی من میگم به شما. شما که هرکی نیسی، سلام. 
جات خالی، پریشب باد زد برگ درخت پیره رو ریخت تو حیاط آسایشگاه. یهو دیدیم همه جا شد برگای چروک زرد و نارنجی، خسته خسته. فهمیدیم پاییز شده. پاییز یهو میاد، می دونی که. وقتی میاد که بدونی باهارت رفته واسه همیشه. گفته بودم برات . 
این روزا خوبم، یعنی از وقتی فراموشت کردم خوبم. صبح تا شب به دیوار نیگا می کنم به همه چی فکر میکنم غیر تو، شبا هم قرصای آبی میخورم، خوابم نمی بره. راه میرم تو حیاط، با دو تا مورچه رفیق شدیم، تا صبح با هم می گردیم دور حوض خالی، ساکت ساکت. حوض خالی عین قبره، آدم دوس داره بره بخوابه توش، ولی یادمون میاد هیشکی نیس بالا قبرمون گل بذاره، میگیم ولش کن نصفه شبی. چارشب پیشا رفتیم با پرستار قشنگه حرف زدیم، نمره خونه شما رو دادیم گرفت، یه دل سیر صداتو گوش کردیم. صدات رو پیغامگیر عین قدیما مهربونه، همونجوری که میگفتی انقد منو نخندون دیوونه. یادته؟ یادت رفته از بس نبودیم. 
عکساتو دیدم دلبر. با یارو جدیدیه، تو سفید پوشیدی اون سیاه، چه به هم میاین. چقد هم قشنگ خندیده بودی براش، یه جوری نیگاش کرده بودی انگار که اون تو باشه و تو من. همون شکلیه که دوس داشتی همیشه. قشنگه، دوسش دارم. یعنی هر کی رو تو دوس داری منم دوس دارم. 
این نامه آخرمه واسه تو. باس جمع کنیم بریم از این آسایشگاه، دکتر گفته روزا میتونی بری کار کنی، شبا بیای همینجا بخوابی. خیلی بهترم. توئم دیگه نترس ، من نمیام داد بزنم سرت، نمیامَم دورت بگردم، نمیام اونقد بخندونمت که ضعف کنی، نمیام بشینم بغل دستت تو ماشینت و سر هر پیچ ماچت کنم، نمیام برات شعر بخونم شبا، نمیام اونقد بگم میشه دلبرانه بنگری که کلافه شی، نمیام بمونم کنارت و شب تا صبح نیگات کنم بس که ماهی وقتی خوابی. نه. میرم گم و گور میشم، ته مهای شهر. جدیدیه از من بهتره، میدونم. دیدم تو عکسا. ببخش اگه نبودم اونی که میخواستی، دوس داشتم باشم، بلد نبودم. توئم دیگه فکر من نباش، غصه نخور، نیا از پشت میله های آسایشگاه یواشکی نیگام کن. 
خوبم. خیال کن دیوونه یه شب خوابید تو حوض خالی، مورچه ها خاک ریختن روش، کلاغ واسش مرثیه خوند، برف اومد. همه یادشون رفته من رو، تو هم بخند و بگذر و فراموش کن که دنیا محل گذره. 
حالا که تموم شده بذار این خط آخر نامه بگم برات، می ارزید. اون روزا به این شبا می ارزید. گفتم که بدونی پشیمون نیسم. فقط دیگه نیسم، خستم، میخوام چارتا پاییز بخوابم. همه میگن آبروم رفته، منم میخندم ومیگم همینه آبرو...
