What Dreams May Come

Éliane Radigue – Naldjorlak (SLT-008)

Saltern presents a thrilling new live recording of Naldjorlak for solo cello, composer Éliane Radigue’s first piece for an acoustic instrument, paired with a remastered version of the long out-of-print, original 2006 recording. Composed in 2005 in close collaboration with cellist Charles Curtis, Naldjorlak marked a striking shift in the music of Radigue, who has since composed exclusively for instrumentalists with her celebrated Occam series. This double-CD album brings together two complete performances by Curtis, recorded nearly 15 years apart (Paris in 2006 and Los Angeles in 2020), drawing attention to the evolution of the piece and to its inherent mutability. The sound and spirit of Naldjorlak are centered around the re-tuning of the entire cello to the wolf tone, a uniquely unstable frequency, creating a haunting, almost feedback-like resonance within the instrument itself. Mastered by Stephan Mathieu with custom packaging and screen printing by Alan Sherry. Includes extensive liner notes by Gascia Ouzounian, Radigue, and Curtis, and a reproduction of Radigue's never-before-published original drawing of Naldjorlak.

From Gascia Ouzounian’s liner notes: “Even as it expands conceptions of what sound is, and thus what music can be, to understand Naldjorlak only as music would be to limit its scope. It is music, but it is also physics and philosophy. Naldjorlak is a detailed investigation of the physical properties of resonating bodies and dynamic systems; it is a meditation on the condition of instability; it is a metaphysics of chaos and uncertainty.”

August 2025 . The residency has just finished, heading home soon to start work on developing a couple of long format works from all the sound captures. 
These are the 3rd batch of 3 short sketches using field recordings captured around Montegiovi, Tuscany. With these little works I am experimenting freely with what can be produced from each days sounds - manipulating them and stitching them back together with the aim of producing a long format work at the end of the residency. I have done maybe 20 or so  since the beginning of August. The idea is to have them done by the end of the day (or night) then move on to something fresh the next day.
I am truly thankful for this opportunity that has been provided for me by the Salamanca Arts Centre in Tasmania and Cultivate Projects/La Baldi residency in Italy and The USA.
And of course the wonderful people of Montegiovi !

This track was produced using four Csound instruments that provided a variety of timbres. The structural framework was built using a chaotic algorithm written in Python which generated the notes for the score.

Finally, more than a year after the initial idea, I can share this concept about the seasons with you.
It consists of several songs merged into a single track. The initial idea came about when I released the song Winter's Ending.
All the tracks are published individually here, with the exception of the interlude Maj (an improvised draft from 2022)
and the track Last Summer, which was completed recently.
Below is the timeline for the entire song.

I did a rough mix of everything, making sure there were no volume peaks.
There will definitely be further adjustments to follow within the structure to make the mix more consistent.
