Alina Kalancea is a sonic alchemist who can warp and weave electronic
signals into complex tapestries of synthesized analog timbre. These
transportive environments were recorded using the artist's personal
collection of historic Buchla electronic music instruments including
Allen Strange's expanded Music Easel.
Letters Never Sent, Alina Kalancea's second full length for Imprec
follows 2021's double LP titled Impedance and is being released at the
same time as a new cassette titled Alchemy.
Kalancea's music has the ability to evoke both emotion and image;
feeling and landscape; passion and place. She described recording
Letters Never Sent as being like collecting images that are born in
your mind. Shades of sound, tone, color and feeling shape the
experience of listening to Kalancea's work.
Kalancea's work is made of malleable sonic material that never looks
or sounds the same way twice. Part of the magic of the music, and her
work is similar to ELEH in this way, is that her work leaves room for
the conscious and unconscious emotions of the listener. How you react
is partially a result of how you feel at the time.
Alchemy, Alina Kalancea's subsequent cassette being released
simultaneously, is a limited edition appendix to the album Letters
Never Sent.

Sifting through East African treasures has become quite a thing for us lately. Trans-Mara Express flew the flag for Lebanon and Kenya not too long ago; today Mikael Seifu spoils us with gifts from neighbouring Ethiopia. And oh, what a present it is. Returning to the familiar grounds of Washington D.C. label 1432 R - the imprint that released his debut Yarada Lij EP last year - comes Seifu's next project, The Lost Drum Beat.

His penchant for melding electronic hardware and traditional Ethiopian sounds is as novel as ever here. The title track manoeuvres with all the mystifying, dubstep/garage jerks of a Burial number, yet this is slightly brighter and more bouncy territory. Nocturnal by nature, yet less forlorn and blessed with ghostly percussive intonations.

The mythic Mike Parker is welcomed to Balans, making his debut on the label with a four-track EP exemplifying his abstract style of eccentric analog resonance.

‘Transgression and Punishment’, characteristic of Parker’s classic fluctuating rhythms he explores soundscapes in experimentalism.
‘Smoke from Burning Fields’ conversely opens with a solid striking bassline making this track highly suitable for a damp and dark dancefloor amongst its hypnotic drive.

On the flipside, ‘The Freezing Process’ dives deep into the unknown where frequencies, submerged underwater, travel through the unfamiliar depths of the deep dark sea. To close out the EP, ‘The Midnight Zone’ is launched into ceaseless high-pitched oscillations, with a marching beat propelling the mind into an unconscious mesmerizing state. 

The perpetually seductive Mike Parker delivers a remarkable performance with this solid four-track addition to the Dutch label Balans Records, continuously known for delivering modern classics.

"I made this track from samples of a piano board I recorded in EMS Stockholm with LAIR while we were working on our project. And some microphone hiss for the beats. I have been making purely percussive tracks recently for my upcoming album, so for this track I wanted to have an emotive melodic element as well. The Futurists rejected tradition and introduced experimental sounds , and this fact, that influenced a lot of composers during the 20th century, helped them to build a concept that started the career of Barcelona based duo Iro Aka. The evolution of their music started with this EP, fluctuating through psychedelic and esoteric influences, taking as its main references the continuous technological evolution and those new techniques to make electronic music. “Futur” is an extract of the first ideas of Iro Aka. They started the project at the beginning of the 2017 and then this EP was produced then, showing the abstraction that they felt at that moment, a path drawn by different sounds that came from different people and different places.
Tapan leaves their mark on Zukunft with reimagining the original as a slowly building, tribal inspired and almost sitting in an alternative timeline. Clever use of percussive elements does not take away from the track being playable in the club.
The slightly psychedelic dance floor experience is delivered by Anatolian Weapons. Pulsating rhythms intertwine with classic drum sounds and paint a mood almost contradicting the vocals of the track. Perfect secret track for any dance-floor.

‘The 5th Apple’ is the debut album of sound artist Alina Kalancea, produced at Störung Studios between 2017 and 2018.

The album is both a deep spoken word within an impressive sound structure whilst also being a multilayered sonic composition complimented by profound introspections. The way string instruments, field recordings, voices and other sources have been intimately utilised to enhance the profundity and power of the spoken word is remarkable. The truths exposed, the fears revealed, the images created with text, all appear more incisive, more definitive, more compelling. On the other hand, the insight and understanding the texts profess provide meaning to the sound sequences. The hypnotic loops receding into the background, the deep and pulsating reverberations, the water dropping frequencies, the disturbing and unsettling string sounds become spaces where what has been conveyed or what it has awoken in ourselves can unfold, or recede into the unknown.

It is an impressive journey, along which sound artists Alex Gámez (Asférico), Julia Kent and Raven Bush have collaborated, producing astonishingly rich sonic environments and venturing into inner abysses, fears and repressed emotions on the way. If we listen close enough we will find an incredibly elaborate and meticulous sound composition with remarkable subtleties, layers and sonic nuances, if we plunge deep enough we may find the prowling fictions which stand in the way of life and could even discover some liberating truths.

There's no quick payoff on Impedance. This is the sound of new, patient electronic music full of depth and substance. 

Alina Kalancea is a Romanian sound artist and composer based in Modena, Italy. She has studied sound design and synthesis with Enrico Cosimi and collaborated with producer Alex Gamez, and artists Julia Kent and Raven Bush.
