New Sevish album Formless Shadows coming September 17th 2021 — it's a quite cinematic album with a variety of moods on it. You can listen on streaming and Bandcamp.

This is the first time I've been able to release two albums in the same year. But you'll find Formless Shadows quite a different listen to January's Bubble. I just really had the urge to make music like this so here it is. As I write this I'm already making plans for future projects that go in a totally different direction. So big thanks to everybody who listens and supports my music making!

Ngarwul, ‘to look’ in Yorta Yorta language, is a 13 minute sound journey, and portal to connect with mother nature through the recordings of birds, wind, water and the spirit within. I looked, listened, felt, sensed, learned, responded, acted and reacted. Ngarwul is a cultural interaction that shares ancient knowledge and Indigenous ways of being. 
 
After creating this work, I titled it Ngarwul, which I thought meant ‘to listen’, but when yarning with Dhoma Nynini Djetja (my dear Aunty Lou*), I learned about Gulpa Ngawar-l  ... 
 
“Gulpa Ngawar-l is the combined Yorta Yorta terms for ‘deep looking and listening.’ In Yorta Yorta gulpa is ‘deep’, ngawar is ‘to listen’ and ngawal is ‘to look’... to Indigenous people it is an important way of being in the world and not exclusive to the Yorta Yorta.

... for example, let us look at the English term Deep Listening. It explains the way in which to listen. Conceptually, in English, we listen only with our ears and deeply inferring that we focus on what we are listening to. The Yorta Yorta term Ngawar-l is a double meaning to both looking and listening simultaneously, it furthers the definition with the addition of the other senses of touching, tasting, feeling and even further depth of instinctual action. The terminology in English still has its limitations, and fails to some extent to relay the depth and understanding” p20 of Dr Lou Bennett’s Thesis; Lotjpa Yorta Yorta! Retrieving, Reclaiming and Regenerating Language and Culture through the Arts. 

During Melbourne’s 6th lockdown (September/October 2021), my mental health slipped into a very dark place. I was doing a lot of meditation, using mindfulness apps, trying to reduce the intense feelings of anxiety and depression but wasn't able to stay present or make sense of anything. Although the practice of mindfulness was helpful, I just couldn’t get into the soundscapes, and came to the realisation that not many First Nations artists are creating music in the ‘ambient’ genre. With the rate of mental health issues in the world today, especially those experienced by First Nations people, I felt it would be deadly to create something not just for me, but for all of us. 
 
Without consciously knowing about Gulpa Ngarwar-l, I used my own instinctual action in my performance on the double bass. My improvisation was a response to the recordings from the Darebin Creek behind Northland Shopping Centre, Preston on Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country. This was a place I went to to re-ground myself, listen, breathe and look within. Ngarwul is a work of resilience and survival, a commitment towards inner peace. It is a diary entry, a time capsule, it is lockdown, freedom, depression, connection and healing. Finally, it was my world when I was desperately looking for a shimmer of hope, when it was hard to see the light.

With all the recent rain - it’s definitely mozzie time – and Kimberley residents and travellers are being warned to protect ourvelves against mosquito bites – because they carry many dangerous viruses.

The WA Department of Health wants us to take precautions to stop the spread of these diseases.

MOZZIE Warning for Kimberley Residents

In this first episode of Country Matters, Donny gets an update on the closure of the Argyle Diamond Mine from Jess Welch, General Manager of Closure with Gelyanyem limited.

Donny catches up with Kimberley Land Council ecologist Marlee Hutton, who’s involved with lots of on-country work alongside various TO Ranger groups throughout the Kimberley. 

We hear all about her exciting work helping to protect some of our most endangered species, such as the scaly-tailed Possum, the Billy, and the night parrot.  

We also pop down to Perth to hear from Lenore Morris , a Gija woman who's currently completing a Masters in Biological Sciences, with a special interest in water.

Kimberley Locals Making a Difference

This episode looks at the huge victory by Traditional Owners of the heritage listed Purnululu National Park. A recent Federal Court ruling has delivered them exclusive Native Title over the iconic region. 

We also find out about the CREATE incubator program giving a leg up to Indigenous start-ups and innovators. Donny speaks with two of the facilitators of the program, who recently visited Kununurra as part of their roadshow across regional WA. 

And, it’s not specially to do with ‘On Country’ matters but none of us can escape it – The Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

As debate gears up on The Voice to Parliament – we speak with the CEO of the Kimberley Land Council, Tyronne Garstone.

Manhattan Beach Party (Short Version)

It started as a mix inspired by the Voyager Golden Record. Then I got obsessed with the Star Trek soundtrack, explored early experimental electronic music, dived into deep, sumptuous ambient synth tracks… and this became a sort of loose history of unearthly music. 

This is one for those deep solo journeys, with the possibility of altering states, or enhancing altered states. Many months of work have gone into piecing this together, both through live jams and fine editing outside of real time. It has been a cathartic process involving a lot of alone time through winter, and working through the death of my father during lockdown.

We loved Sci-fi, watching things like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Doctor Who and Star Trek together. I have so much gratitude for his life.

Here's a lil mix for you who may appreciate this
It's been an interesting year for music... The abrupt halt in us sharing music in live contexts definitely shook me up in ways, and the ups and downs of my creative process have made me wonder lately what really matters in all this to me.
I tried on existing with the stress of "needing to figure out how to redesign my career" to make it more "worth(?) it" without shows , the thought maybe i need more followers and more posts and more likes , to be "better(?)" or "bigger(?)"
Some days i'd open the studio door and wonder : "is this officially an office job now???? really, is it???
Is music but a product to be sold in some capitalist system?
Fuck no.
the studio to me is meant to be a temple, a safe-haven for expression and creativity.
this music is a gift to be shared. it's a vibe that has connected people for times immemorial, in continuously evolving forms. so much bigger than any individual.

I wanna take a moment to say thank you if you've been a listener, and if this music has moved you or inspired you, that means the most to me.
You're more than just another follower or like , you're part of this world with me.

Our world is going through some crazy times, and  i think it is very important for us to question the ways we relate to each other as humans, and what our true value systems are. Each of us has an input on reality.

Ive been putting out music on solstice for years now, but had to take some deep moments this year for myself to remember...
i love music, creating is a pleasure to me, and i love sharing it as well
i believe we are all connected through this web of life
so i offer these sounds as a gift
and if this can be of service to you, i celebrate that
