Red earth

Most individuals and organizations that like to think they are on top of national issues have spent at least some time paying lip service to the issue of northern food security.  Fortunately, some have gone farther than that.  And today we spend time at one such institution.  I have aways been struck by the particular challenges (and potentials) of food production in the north.  There are many models to follow, from Nordic countries, from the Canadian Territories, from Labrador.  Yes, you can farm in Labrador, but it is different from doing so on the island of Newfoundland.  For one thing, I’ve met Labrador farmers who have never had to remove a rock from their land.  Think about that for a moment, if you are farming on the island.

Today we are visiting the Pye Centre for Northern Boreal Food Systems, there on Mud Lake Road, just outside of Happy Valley, Labrador.  It is a community hub,  a research centre, a living lab showing options for food production in the north, and much more.  I’m here with Jamie Jackman, the Coordinator of Community Connections & Education at the Pye Centre.  You met him a couple of seasons ago.  So we can hear how the story has unfolded.
