Mended

I have been thinking a lot about the purity of improvisation lately - particularly regarding its ability to capture a moment in time, much the same way that a photograph does. I've been plugging away at experiments, ideas, theories...potential ways of laying out scores to encourage ensemble improvisation within a quasi-pre-composed work, and I just felt the need tonight to experience something through practice...sort of putting my money where my ideas are, so to speak. I have never done this before (and those that know me know that this goes against every fiber of my compositional being), but I decided to capture a completely unplanned late-night moment alone at my keyboard, resist the urge to revise/edit anything, and upload it to SoundCloud. So, this is five minutes of music that I recorded about five minutes ago. I wanted to see how this would affect me, and now I want to see what effect it has on listeners.  I suggest a quiet place for this one...and an open mind.  Comment if you wish, but don't feel compelled to. Hope it takes you somewhere, or maybe brings you back again.

Ampersand

For orchestra. Premiered/recorded by the CIM Orchestra with Marcelo Ramos holding the baton. The title comes from that moment when you know you are on the precipice of a new chapter in your life or in history; when you know something significant is about to change. The moment itself is brief, but carries a strange and distinct feeling with it--much like an approaching shift in weather: uncertainty, apprehension, or perhaps excitement....and the sudden realization that things will never again be the same. That fleeting sense of mystery is what I hope to evoke with this piece.
