The critically acclaimed “South Side” LP from Italian maestro Sofatalk receives the remix treatment on Broken District, with 4 remixes by Contours, Jus Jam, Tour-Maubourg and Warren Xclnce.

Given the diversity and musical richness of the original release, it was a fertile ground for a remix exercise... and the resulting package is a surprising combination of Breaks, Acid, Dub music and House.
We start with French talent Tour-Maubourg: a natural choice after his impressive and versatile “Paradis Artificiels” album on Pont Neuf Records. Here he delivers a Dub mix of “Ella”, retaining the warm atmosphere of the original track, with a deep and elegant Jamaican Dub aesthetic.

The second remix comes from Manchester artist Contours. The producer established himself as a steady name in the UK Electronic scene for the past few years, with outstanding releases on Rhythm Section, Shall Not Fade and ANMA Records just to name a few. On his “No Frills” remix, he keeps the jazzy, Broken Beat drums from Sofatalk and adds a strong 4/4 kick, giving the original track a real push. The remix then evolves into an Acid House/T echno production with Contours layering down an acid bassline carefully carved for big room dancefloors.

Warren Xclnce (from UK duo Kassian) steps up for the remix of “Raw Ivy”. The London-based producer offers a warm, colourful House revision of the original track. The smart part? As a subtle artist with wide influences, Warren preserves the jazzy elements but adds a delicate touch of Tech-House, boosting the Sofatalk production.

Finally, Broken District’s co-founder Jus Jam closes the EP with his ‘Only Cuts’ remix of “South Side”. He delivers an incredibly smart version of the track, only created with samples taken from the original track. The result: a high-powered Breaks tune with beautifully layered synth pads giving a touch of nostalgia and that light atmospheric feeling only Jus Jam could add.

Releasing a remix EP is a delicate thing to do. Broken District here succeeds by combining artists with different sensibilities and inspirations, creating an overall feeling of wide variety, yet with a strong identity backed by the original work from Sofatalk.

PREMIERE : Sofatalk - No Frills (Contours Remix)

The city was tired – it had been standing for too long. It was only a matter of time before the wheels came off and the industry which once was here retreated into the nothingness of empty warehouses and abandoned complexes. This was not how it had been supposed to end…

As the clouds passed over the sprawling metropolis, it were as if they too were leaving this place one by one. They came and went, much in the same way as the investment had done. All that was left here now were good people, kind spirits and the remainder of a once great empire which had stood tall and proud, built upon its machines.

Mark Hand & Neil Iceton channel influences from Detroit on this brilliant new EP for Innate. These tracks could have been recorded in the Motor City way back for all we know. Beautiful, wild, sprawling melodies are paired with fast paced drums and percussion which is built for dancing. This one comes highly recommended with a gold seal of approval.

PREMIERE: Mark Hand & Neil Iceton - Rigil [Innate]

It's dark in the forest. Especially in the »northwest«. You have to adjust all your senses. But once you have, the forest will take you in his arms. The forest will protect you. Just like Daniel Herrmann's first album for Live At Robert Johnson will protect you.

Herrmann is far from being unknown in the world of music - let alone in the art or photography world. In the music field, he is probably much more known under his Flug 8 moniker where he released five albums on Disko B, Doxa Records, Ransom Note, and Acid Pauli's Smaul Recordings. Under his given name, Daniel Herrmann's relationship with LARJ's label boss Ata Macias goes way back. As an artist and photographer Herrmann was the only one allowed to take pictures inside Ata's ROBERT JOHNSON club, thus creating an iconic series of pictures of clubbers and club life in general. Herrmann’s pictures of the partying punters themselves were presented as wallpaper all over Robert Johnson back in 2002.

With »Enroute« Herrmann enters new territory: It is his most ambient work up to today. And yes, it is a piece of work created during the lockdown. Herrmann's studio is situated in the outskirts of Frankfurt, near the forest - a quite remote place already in-between the Taunus mountain range. Imagine life during the lockdown in such a place … This is where Herrmann set up his former basement studio in the large living room with a variety of instruments besides a cozy fireplace spending warm light and warmth. A warmth that despite its seemingly rather "cold" atmosphere can be heard all over »Enroute«. Once you soak in the sounds (or get soaked into the sounds) of the first tracks like album opener »northwest«, »Fly By Wire« or the 11min »Dark Trace« you might feel this warmth too. A cold warmth you could say, yet a warmth that only modular systems and synthesizers can create.

There is a change of mood with »Intercontinental« - literally as it seems that Herrmann indeed is on an intercontinental journey here despite the strolls and long walks in silence through the Taunus forest. This is also the place where Herrmann took many photographs of the forest and its trees (to be seen on his Instagram account) - and the picture on the cover: This spooky yet fragile high seat in the mist in front of those trees. Yet darkness alone is not dominating this album. Even during these dark days, there was a bit of light at the end of the tunnel. And it shows in the beauty of »Bouncing Rays«.

»Enroute« is done all alone and in total isolation. And one can hear it. But it also invites the listener to be a part of this lonely world. And we all know that being lonely is made easier with someone on your side - »enroute« to a better place. A place that isn't lonely at all.

With previous releases on the label picking up support from scene heavyweights Ben UFO, Pearson Sound, re:ni, and more, Tano returns for his third release on his own In Armatura imprint. Turning in another five high-quality cuts taking influence from UK Techno, Breaks, Electro and beyond, the Puerto Rico via NYC DJ/producer delivers another knockout set of sound system ready jams. 

Leading the release, ‘You Know What Time It Is’ sees watery sound FX, sliced up vocals, and weighty subs dance around skipping, syncopated beats for a speaker-rattling start to the EP. ‘Clockworx’ follows with choppy breaks and arpeggiated synths unfurling throughout, before ‘Where Did You Go?’ brings dense atmospheres and reverb-soaked percussive hits for a heavy-hitting stepper. 

The penultimate ‘The Last Minute’ reaches for heads-down territories as hand percussion and heaving low end effortlessly roll throughout, crafting a hypnotic late-night groover. ‘Step Into Vesuvio’, the closing track on the EP, brings yet another dose of bass weight, matching trippy grooves with propulsive synthesis.

PREMIERE : Tano - The Last Minute

The river marked out its territory, running a course proudly through the city. The current was strong and steady, swelling and lapping at the murky banks that bordered it. It had always been her choice to be by the water, she needed it to feel connected to the earth, it helped her stay grounded and calm; to find peace and clarity. It could be a stream, a pond or an ocean, as long as the water flowed somewhere close by, she'd feel complete.

Last year marked Spanish producer Divorce From New York's debut full length for London-based record label High Praise. Now he makes his return for a second LP, Sausalito, which, over its seven track duration, fuses broken beat, house and jungle influences to create a vibrant, uplifting journey best consumed in the sunshine. Demonstrating his prowess as a beat maker, Divorce From New York crafts bright and textural music, layering infectious melodies and vocals over syncopated drum patterns.

Acid house label Chicago Bee will release the compilation ‘Home Listening - Acid & House’ on 7 November, on vinyl and digitally. 

The vision for the ‘Home Listening' compilation album was to create a collection of tracks that complement each other and are fitting for repeated home listening. Being somewhat of a conceptual experiment, all the artists on the album were asked to imagine fusing Acid and House with the Virtualsex LP which was released on Buzz in 1993. A 303 sound would be welcomed but not essential with an emphasis on soulful emotion and melody.   

Some of the artists are people who label boss Mark Churcher (aka A-Eno-Acid) has struck up a relationship with since starting Chicago Bee and some targeted deliberately as Mark thought they would be able to hit the brief. The project threw up many interesting results with some artists drifting outside of their normal comfort zone! Artists featured include Derek Carr, Type 303, Fear-E, Forgotten Corner, and label boss A-Eno-Acid. 

From Finland, Dan Kaipio has become a versatile and prolific artist over recent years and this is his second appearance on Chicago Bee. With EP releases on the popular I Love Acid and Downfall Recordings labels to his name, he’s no mug. He nails a vintage acid sound with his track, ’Stairway To Jupiter’.
