Alma Negra are back with more sunshine grooves to nice up open air dancefloors and lift the spirit from Berlin to Bali from Mombasa to Lagos.  The ‘San Jon EP’ is the debut release from ‘The Alma Negra Live Band’.  Although the band has had many international gigs and adventures, this is the first release that Alma Negra has recorded with their team of talented musicians live in the Alma Negra studio. Co-ops with a myriad of musicians has become an integral part of the Alma Negra sound of today and over the past 5 years.

 

This EP is one for the live heads as ‘Mombasa to Lagos’ kicks off this head-nodding package from the Basel based collective plus their live band members.  It’s a straight up Afrobeat dance work with electronic influences laced throughout its journey from East to West.  ‘San Jon’ takes its inspiration from the street procession in Cabo Verde which celebrates the religious festival of St Jon. This cut is played out over a 3/4 rhythm with drums and the loose-limbed swanky dancer firmly in mind.  

 

‘Taxi Radio’ is one wild journey where up-tempo beats, hints of reggae, wild frenetic percussion, and some nasty synths are all combined on this pacey cut. With his remix, Mehmet Aslan expands the rhythmic variety with his Soca interpretation of ‘San Jon’, resulting in a tripped-out joint to be played deep into the extended hours of the club.  ‘Alma Negra's Night Mix’ of the title track rounds out the EP with a deeper and more moody interpretation of the original.

Tigerbalm – Waiheke

Having recently opened her account on Ubiquity Records with the brilliant, Bali-inspired single ‘Kete’, Rose Robinson returns as Tigerbalm with another snapshot of her forthcoming debut album, International Love Affair. As with its predecessor, ‘Waiheke’ gleefully blurs the boundaries between contemporary club music and the rising star’s love of rhythms and musical cultures from around the world.

All of the tracks on International Love Affair were specifically inspired by places Robinson has visited pre and post-pandemic. ‘Waiheke’ is no exception, with Robinson starting work on the track following an inspirational trip to the Flamingo Pier festival on Waiheke Island, New Zealand.

Once again, the track is rooted in the London-based producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist’s deep love of delay-laden 21st century disco, organic house and deep electronic club cuts. Pairing these influences with African-influenced percussion and sampled chants, Robinson delivers a sparkling fusion of Afro-cosmic and dubbed-out nu-disco rich in sparkling synth sounds and warm, weighty bass.

Appropriately, Robinson’s original Tigerbalm take on ‘Waiheke’ is backed with a wealth of inspired remixes tailored to tantalise and tease a variety of dancefloors. The headline-grabbing remix comes from fellow ‘world dance’ fusionists Alma Negra, whose organic sounding, loose-limbed rework adds dubbed-out synth, guitar and vocal snippets to rolling Afro-disco beats and a faithful rendition of Robinson’s brilliant bassline.

A smoother, more atmospheric interpretation of the track follows next in the shape of the BANANAS FOR BREAKFAST remix – think hazy, mid-tempo Balearic nu-disco smothered in sunrise-ready chords, Steve Hillage style guitar textures and heady, star-gazing intent. It’s a remix that’s as immersive and mind-soothing as it is dancefloor-ready.

Semi-Delicious founder Demi Riquisito, a rising star of the London deep and tech-house scenes, delivers a wonderfully spacey, tactile revision in his distinctive style, wrapping echoing sci-fi synths, intergalactic chords and chanted vocal snippets over a subtly acid-flecked house groove, while Quartz opts for a stripped-back, new wave-goes-dub-disco flex on a revision that sounds like a long-lost B-side from a sought-after early ‘80s post-punk single.

Fittingly, Robinson gets the final word with a breezy, laidback ‘Sunset Rework’ built around mid-tempo Afro-house beats, heady hand percussion, stretched-out synthesizer chords and locked-in bass guitar loops. It provides a perfect end to the vinyl version of the EP, with the digital edition also including a tidy Tigerbalm radio edit for those who prefer shorter blasts of inspired cross-cultural musical fusion.

‘Waiheke’, then, is another sublime single from an artist whose distinctive personal style is rightly winning plaudits from across the musical spectrum. Her soon-come debut album is one you won’t want to miss.

JUS-ED LIVE IN WINTERGARTEN 13.07.2024

In July 2010, I got an invitation to play at a small but neat festival named Folk Ibiza. It was my first visit to the island. I got to spin at a bunch of different locations, such as the Hostal Boutique Salinas, Sunset Ashram, and on the terrace at Space. I returned in September of the following year to play a set on Andy Wilson's show on Ibiza Sonica and a second time at the Hostal. I have not been back to Ibiza since. I recently came across this picture (taken at Cala Compte next to Sunset Ashram), which inspired me to make this mix. I tried to sonically capture the vibe that I felt back then. It includes some bona fide classics such as Ashra "Oasis“, Santana "Aqua Marine," and Jah Wobble & Holger Czukay "Hold On To Your Dreams," as well as tunes by Smith & Mudd, Begin, Quiet Village and more. Radiolamento is the appointment that brings to you a mix, made by my favourite Deejays/Producers from all around the world.

The 45th episode is mixed & selected by Alma Negra.
Basel based twins Dersu and Diego Figueira have been spinning funk, house, disco and boogie across Switzerland and Europe since their teens and now converge together as Alma Negra. Coming from a musical family with strong Cape Verde roots, they soon embraced the Latin and African rhythms that are at the heart of the music they love. As dancers, drummers and latterly producers it is the foundation of what they do. 
Hip Hop culture was their gateway into music. Later house from Chicago, New York and Detroit gave them an understanding of the genre’s cross cultural heritage, from the jazz and dance that emerges from Cuba or Brazil to the scenes of the West and East Coasts of Africa. The duo have brought this wide ranging sound to clubs and parties including Fuse (Brussels), Le Sucre (Lyon), Zukunft (Zurich), Claire (Amsterdam), African Acid Is The Future (Berlin).
The first Alma Negra edits surfaced in 2014 and there has been a steady stream of original productions ever since. The Basel producers’ distinct drive, rhythmic sensibilities and unique percussive sound has gained support from across many scenes, with the likes of Daphni, Ben UFO and Four Tet to Hunee and Antal playing their music. Their discography now includes releases on labels such as Sofrito, Heist, Basic Fingers and Lumberjacks In Hell. They show up regularly at Gilles Petersons Worldwide FM who supported them since the very beginning.
Alma Negra Recordings was launched in 2018 and is dedicated to releasing club-ready records that sit comfortably on the dance floor but bring unusual sounds and arrangements to the club. The first run of 4 records on the label is the ’12 Rhythms’ series from the twins, with each track taking a distinct global rhythm or dance and combining it with contemporary electronic music. 
As well as a DJ duo they have been developing a live set with close firend Mario Robles and a cast of musicians, it has been rolled out at festivals such as Contre Temps (France), Jetzt Musik, The Reeberbahn Festival (Germany) and Southport Weekender (UK). 
As Alma Negra continue to draw their Cape Verde roots closer to the house dance floor, you could be introduced to Funana and Cola/Zouk next to Caribbean Salsa and Rumba. Whatever they bring to the club it is sure to live long in the minds of dancers.

Seb Wildblood, one of the driving forces behind Church Records, makes his debut on Let’s Play House with an EP called ‘Familiar Boundaries’.

The first of the four tracks ‘Necessary Happiness’ sets the tone of the EP with chilled house beats featuring keys by Paul Cut.

An embellished and brighter version of the first track is repeated later with a mix by Mad Sax.

Seb finishes things off with ‘Pass the Pen’, a jazzy hip-hop beat accompanied with loose instrumentals.

We’re bringing the music back in the venue. We miss vibing and grooving together. The circumstances are different but the mindset remains the same. During these times we can only dance in our imagination and we want to nourish exactly that creative state of mind while respecting the rules.

Tenth Black and White Session with Ajele.
As daughter of a Swiss mother and a Ghanaian father, Ajele was born and raised in Switzerland, where, at the age of eighteen, she got introduced to the electronic music scene and realized there were hardly any female DJs. Now that was something she strived to change! The Decision was made and the first records, mixer and decks where bought. Vinyl shopping became an addiction and playing them a passion. Since 1996 she’s an inherent part of Zurich’s electronic music scene.
In the past 10 years she took a step back from traveling abroad but she still has her regular gigs within the Swiss clubs and festivals. She is also a regular in our livingroom, where she developed her smooth side. Playing her eclectic interpretation of a chillout set.
