This is a recording of a live solo performance on clarinet and soprano saxophone at the City Kirche in Koblenz, Germany on 27. March 2015. I played to a six-channel sound installation of my electroacoustic work that had been on all day. Free improvised music is what I'm up to these days, mostly solo, mostly soprano, and I'm beginning to record in places that offer interesting acoustics. The City Church does not have interesting, but fantastic acoustics, and the installation / performance project will be documented as an album on my label trente oiseaux.

I was completely blown away by both the inside and outside of Gaudi's "Sagrada Familia" Basilica in Barcelona during a family vacation this past summer. Each side of the outer structure uses very different and dramatic artistic and architectural elements to tell the story of the death and birth of Christ, while the inside has some the most stunning stained-glass windows I have ever seen. These four movements are snapshots of these different aspects of the church, culminating with a moment that explores the truly awesome impact of the building as a whole.

This work is based on assertions found in Masaru Emoto's book "The Hidden Messages in Water", which can be interpreted as a more spiritual extension of String Theory/Quantum mechanics.  String Theory is about how objects in our universe are composed of vibrating filaments (strings) and membranes (branes) of energy, and the author asserts that the best vehicle to capture and transport these vibrations is water.  His way of proving this was to take pictures of the crystals formed in frozen water after being exposed to different kinds of music and concentrated thoughts directed towards the water. The results were a visual representation of the manifestation of variations of positive and negative emotions.

"Through which we flow" embodies different sonic manifestations of joy, hate, and prayer - using the resonances specifically created by string instruments and the unique acoustic of the church itself to remind us of the power of our own thoughts and actions.  This is piece is dedicated to Julian Wachner, Melissa Baker, Walker Beard, Joshua Anand Slater, Avi Stein, and Harrison Joyce for their tireless work in making Trinity Wall Street an important musical institution here in NYC.

Please Me, Place Me is a work that calls into question 'who?' without further explanation.

Our soprano is at once in the process of storytelling and recollecting, both directing and reflecting, while at the same time communicating with the string quartet and you, the audience. Her identity is unknown, her experience of time is unsure, and she is grasping hold of what she can say with certainty. These words are those of Gertrude Stein: Stanza in Meditation, Part 3, no. 3. John Ashbery, speaking of this collection of poems, states:

'Perhaps the word that occurs oftenest in the Stanzas is the word "they," for this is a poem about the world, about "them..." Less frequently, "I" enters to assess the activities of "them," to pick up after them, to assert his own altered importance. As we get deeper into the poem, it seems not so much as if we were reading as living a rather long period of our lives with a houseful of people.'

The joy of making music is that there is never a 'me' alone. Music exists between people– and thus, I wonder who the 'me' is that I'm referring to in the title.

I was burning inside and my skin was shivering with discomfort but something about the silence and stillness of that place kept me completely unbothered. The story wasn’t closed entirely yet. The full moon was burning bright almost as fervidly as the inside of my ribcage; gazing at the beautiful blending of shapes and complexion, fields of golden wheat glowing in the moonlight. The scent beguiling the senses, heightening aches to unimagined dimensions.

“Write the ending that picks up a new chapter.” 

- I honor you Deity, not on the shrine but between the sheets.

We burned those letters and laughed at the red moon above us. The last time I saw his eyes he reminded me of his gentle ever-persisting presence in my every breath. 

"I’ll be always with you.”

My heartbeat went voiceless. Like a raging river in a heavy rain the neurotransmitters flooded my brain in a perfect coherence. The softness of their symphony slipped out of my ears back into Mother Earth; I honor you Deity. The last time I saw his eyes instead of breaking down in tears of indescribable tranquility and absolute freedom, I felt the building up of fire in my cells, high like no other; 

CLARITY. 

It rushed through my veins like a lightning strike; his eyes worshiped this entity "don’t forget who you are.” This time something in me moved. DNA repair. Absence filled. Something ancient in me, finally, left. 

"Don’t worry.” The tender glimmer from my brother’s eyes calmed down every storm that ever existed in my flesh. Wars were over. The softness of the rose petals smeared the teardrop on my face. “Welcome home.” The codes in my ear whispered by his velvet voice wiped off the history of sorrows and brought back all the shattered, stuck energy to the present moment. “It belongs to you.” This adoration knows no bounds;

I honor you deity not on the shrine but up my spine. 

I dig my soles deeper into the earth, not flying around with winds anymore. He knows my thoughts are always folded in a form of a love poem. In the most ferocious moments composed by the fibre of reality, they morph into sonnets. Lovers listen to those songs, with no awareness of their substance. 

“Red is the essence that wears a woman.” 

She stood there on the pedestal that I put her on, touched by God’s grace; she was ravishing. The fire in my chest became a blaze, as the seraphic glow from her eyes locked with her reflection in my scan. Those two wild glittering orbs which always flashed around to briefly catch the holiness of her entire being. She sat at the cafe that day........

I honor you Deity, not on the shrine but between my ribs.
