The haiku of the week was written by Sôen Nakagawa, a key figure in the transmission of Zen Buddhism from Japan to the Western world.

Disquiet Junto Project 0400 - Sub Divided (9) [disquiet0400]

Subtitled "Bloom". I created the music from her voice only - isolating microtones and playing them as notes, adding fx (chorus, expander, reverb).  This is an edit of parts 5 and 6.

Malka Older – The Divided – Part 9/9 disquiet0400

This is my entry for the 400th Disquiet Junto.

For this assignment we were too create a score for one part of Malka Olders short story: The Divided.
Furthermore we were to only use the source audio material.

My solution includes granular synthesis to create the bassy part and the "out-of-tune" drone, as well as randomly sampling a small sibilant syllable and feeding it to a reverberant effect for a noisy ambience.
I've slightly modified the pauses in Olders performance to make the 'rythm' feel right.
Everything was made in Ableton 10.
The part was chosen by having random.org supply me a random integer.

Malka Older – The Divided – Part 3/9 disquiet0400

I scored Malka Older's reading of her story with a trippy ominous techno. All the sounds in the track are made out of cut up and processed snippets of the author's voice.

Drones and textures were processed with Remnant, Crystallizer and Valhalla Vintage Verb.
Drums and Rhythmic elements were processed with Devil-Loc, Spectre, Compression and EQ.

The Assignment: Create a score to a Malka Older story using the author’s own voice as source audio.

The only sounds heard on this piece come from the narration. The first sounds heard - the synth sound - are using Ableton Live's Wavetable synth using the story as the wavetable. Next, the airy choir sound is from Audio Damage's Quanta with the author's voice as the source audio. Some reverb is added for effect.

This is more sound design than score but the majority of the sounds were created from Malka's voice. The walls, the ticking clock, the background drone. I used a couple of samples from freesound.org; gulls1 by soundmary and Birds and Ambience at La Crux plaza by starman827. The gulls were chopped with Quanta and delayed; the birds were untouched. The walls were a combination of Serum and Ableton wavetables of Malka's voice modulated with an envelope. A second track of the original stem was mangled with various granular effects and delays. A drone, also made with wavetables from the original stem, detuned and played in unison is continuous in the background. 

I'd hoped to make this more musical but will settle for an atmospheric albeit literal take.

I really wanted to do this project but my weekend was busy with traveling. Fortunately Monday was Labor Day and I found a spare hour or two.

I feel reasonably comfortable working with a voice track and adding ambiance to it. I wanted to add both gloss to the reading, and grit in the form of electronic noise. I dumped the soundtrack into Iris 2, selected a bit of it and used that as a patch. A Steerpike delay ensemble drowns out the intelligible bits and creates a disturbing sound effect which I repeated to more or less coincide with pauses of the voice.

I used three send effects: a hall reverb to set the voice in space and strengthen it, GlitchMachine's Cryogen to pepper the track with buffer freeze sounds, and SphereQuad to flange the voice, so as to degrade it a bit without sacrificing intelligibility.

I needed a pad sound to complete this, and chose a Parsec patch. I drew in some long notes to create chords that dissolved into one another, and pretty much got it right in one go. I added a very long reverb and set the overall volume low to make sure not to overwhelm the voice.

The track is a few seconds longer than the source material, to give the reverb and buffer effects a chance to die down -- and even then, I had to use a fairly harsh fadeout to limit the excess time to 4 seconds.

Malka Older – The Divided – Part 7:9 Disquiet0400

To accompany the narration, I used a sample of a short phrase as source audio for ambient and percussive sounds (using Logic's EXS24). These represent the broken landscape and the voices of those trapped in the wall. I also mix in some of a violin improvisation, chasing the feeling of loss and search for re-connection in this story.
