Barclay Crenshaw makes electronic music that includes bass, dub, jungle, funk and hip-hop. Building on several contributions to Bristol's forward thinking label Limbo Tapes and appearances at festivals across North America including Mutek, Bass Coast and Active Passive, Birthname (fka Caro) continues to distill their loop-oriented style of storytelling. 

Birthname makes and processes sounds using hardware, computers, batteries and numerous small fuses and wires. A computer is made up of over 30 different minerals which are mined and extracted from the earth. 

They explore various means of communication by layering field recordings, instrumentation, voice and synthesized waveform. There are 7 main types of communication and an estimated 7,000 to 7,100 distinct languages spoken worldwide. 

Birthname's music is both a mirror and a bridge. Merging intimate, inner-life with the current historical, topological and geopolitical landscapes. Like any spiritual practice, it is an exercise in attention. 

On the air regularly since 2018, Caro has hosted and welcomed many guests through radio shows on CJLY (Nelson, BC), B.Side Radio (Vancouver, BC) and online through Noods Radio (Bristol, UK). Their new monthly as Birthname, called Fire Shelter, airs monthly on n.10as out of Montreal. 

Spiral Dance, their most recent LP, was released in 2025 via Limbo Tapes.
