A binaural recording of the Roma market in Tirana. The sellers are whistling while unloading cloth into a covered area as the crowds sift through the wares. Suleiman sings the song the others are whistling for everyone and improvises percussion. The song is from the north of Albania, near Kukës.

10 in the evening, on the top of the hill in Tirana's Artificial Lake Park. Couples hidden under trees, packs of dogs, distant thumping clubs, a nighttime fitness park, crackling corn, the call to prayer, and lots and lots of frogs. Recorded with a directional mic.

We were sitting in a cafe in Püke, northern Albania, after speaking with one of the town's instrument makers. As the Adhan began to sound, I walked towards the nearby mosque. The crackling sounds of the recorded voice echo against the hills. In the dirt and grass field next to the mosque, the call ends in a another rhythm of crickets.

“Living Memory” is composed of eight sound world scenes utilizing field recordings collected over the past ten years.  The piece is mixed live on the 4d Sound System. The performer directs the entrance and exit of the worlds, retaining certain sound movements, and controlling the speed, direction, duration, and delays of particular sounds. Footsteps over different terrains, voices and vehicles, contract and expand into the space of the performer who carries a spatial sensor. Social situations, music, soundscapes, and abstract sounds of urban and rural environments are woven together in a work that shifts space, blending time periods and localities. Abstract sonic fragments echo through the different worlds emphasizing sound as both a spatial and emotional memory, as a medium that transmits time, place, and proprioception.

Excerpts from Athens streets in the late summer and fall of 2015 and spring of 2016.

Refugees line up for breakfast in a makeshift camp in Pedion Areos. Police radios chirp at the annual November 17 March. On the evening of the march, a man sings an ode to Athina underneath her statue in Pedion Areos park as the late protestors stream by. The following spring, children take part in a march protesting the barring of Afghan refugees being allowed to cross the border in Idomeni.

This composition was created through a feedback network of simulcast sound transmission between Athens and Tinos on the Locus Sonus network of open microphones (http://locusonus.org/soundmap/051/) . The recording that remains installed here is of a live performance between Exarchia, Athens, and Khora, Tinos, which took place on June 5, 2017.

The initial field recordings that were played into the system to create a signal were gathered between 2012 and 2017 throughout Greece and the Balkans. The recordings include unstable structures, spaces that are made meaningful through the passage through them: ports, land borders, roads, boats, sites of pilgrimage, marching protestors, unfinished construction, and temporary settlements of refugees.

The speakers, microphones, and the network are the site and the performers, creating a new locality through feedback. The broadcast creates a temporary space, combining the acoustic attributes of two rooms separated by the sea, and the sonic social memories of many more places in between.

Sound Entangled Spaces - Network Improvisation and Installation at Tinos Quarry Platform, 2017

The sounds in this composition are recorded in the neighborhood of Metaxourghio, Athens with contact microphones, filtered through materials on the street: parking bollards, tram posts, signs, electric boxes, and fences. Live sound is filtered into the gallery space via a contact microphone on an exterior balustrade sending sound into a pair of transducers on the windows.

Ora is a live performance created at the Liminaria residency in Guardia Sanframondi, Italy, July 2018

The ticking pendulum of the restored but non-functional tower clock in Ave Gratia Plana, a unique device designed and constructed by local engineer Alfonso Sellaroli in 1870 drives the rhythm of the work.

Sellaroli moved his engineering studio to a nearby village, Cerrita Sanita, where he was responsible for constructing the first street lights. Ceritta Sanita, unlike Guardia, was rich enough at the time to afford electricity due to its flourishing ceramics industry. 

The pendulum’s oscillating periodicity is complemented by the irregular frequencies of the organ located in the same church, the studio works of a ceramicist in Cerrita Sanita, the Ponteladolfo river, children playing tag, folk songs, the flora and fauna of the village, and a live intervention of church bells from a nearby church.
