We created the soundtrack for Tide magazine’s first issue. 

We worked together on the occasion of this new publication, by following the same guidance as the editorial team: to explore the notions of fulfillment and emptiness, through sonic textures instead of words and images. 

The result is less of a straightforward mix, and more of a varied musical atmosphere, which invites our readers to experience every page in an innovative way.

AM Mix for Tide Magazine #1

For this show for @lyl_radio we invited @collo-6 and @mimi-mhb to make two short mixes. COLLO is part of AM Catalog (https://amsoundesign.com/publishing), a selection of tracks dedicated to synchronization and involved in AM Studio (https://amsoundesign.com/composition), a collective of music composers in partnership with AM. 

The second half of the mix is from MIMI, a Brussels native, DJ and herbalist. Through this mix they look to blend soft textures and abrasive sound design.

COLLO is also co-founder of NIA Records. The label looks to release music rooted in openness and honesty, while amplifying sound based practices existing to dismantle and decolonise oppressive, racist, patriarchal and capitalist structures. The curation of releases gives priority to underrepresented scenes and artists. All label side profits from the release will be donated to Collective Aid, caring for Refugees and other displaced people in Europe. The curation of the label is influenced by current times that we live in and draws inspiration from innovators, not only in music but in fashion and art.  From creators pushing boundaries while showing vulnerability.

AM crafts an original soundscape from extracts of ‘Fear Liath More’ by Alejandra Salinas and Aeron Bergman from the album Scotch Monsters (Softmusic Records 2003) and from 'Drone#4' by Anomali from the album Drone & Tones For The Free (Microrama Records 2017).

Repeat: a chair as invitation to the reading

Repeat is the cross of various points of his researches.  First is the fascination about the chair. This one as a sculpture/micro architecture/painted object depending of the way it is articulated. But, it is first of all an object waiting for its subject. Unlike the scenic compositions of Vermeer there is no instrument, just this speaker. The background emphasizes this idea of a staging without figure. The successive strips of colors remind about the application of paint on architecture by Rietveld, also the height of the chair. The succession of strips works also as variation like on a music score. Like most of his other art works, it needs someone else involvement. This a way to keep it opened. No instrument, an impracticable chair, without the performative act and its function of representation, the system can only be activated by one of its composers; electronic and repetitive!

Confessions, secrets and things left unsaid: music as a personal diary

As AM, Aimée and Marie have been crafting soundscapes and musical identities for brands since 2015. For Tide, they have imagined a soundtrack inspired by the magazine itself, but that also goes beyond it. They talk with us about this musical diary, that adds layers of meaning and emotions to every page. 

The exercise of interpreting themes or images and transforming them into musical sounds and textures is a treacherous one. The palettes are infinite and there is a risk of getting lost while building bridges from one particularly subjective medium to another. Or to simply not have that bridge recognized as a bridge by someone else, who had not imagined the same links and associations that you did. When it works, though, this sonic alchemism can create whole other layers of meanings and emotions. 

Or, as the duo behind AM puts it, it can create “an echo in people’s minds and foster desires”. As music directors, they have been “crafting soundscapes” for brands and artists since 2015, with mixes, playlists and original music. For them, the approach of creating a musical coating for Tide is slightly different than for a fashion show, where it’s more like a 3D soundscape, making a soundtrack for a special occasion that takes place during a short period of time. These 14 tracks, they imagine, “will have a different physical and emotional impact for each listener, that we can’t really control”.

The inspiration came not only from the dual theme on which this issue is built, but also, they say, from its “creative direction and editorial choices: photos, graphic guidelines, topics of the articles and interviews”. What emerges is just about forty minutes of eerie sounds and soothing textures, woven by multiple voices that seem to be telling the same story from different points of view. 
Aimée and Marie wanted to conjure a “musical diary” where the author has to “decide to write everything or leave some things unsaid, maybe by fear of being read”. “We made it very atmospheric with some curious tonalities and changing rhythms. We definitely wanted to make this tension felt in the mix, like something very mysterious and curious, also very feminine because we felt that femininity was really present in this issue”, they explain.

And so it feels almost inevitable that the spoken introduction would be by one of the most spectral, and yet present, feminine TV characters of all time: Laura Palmer. In Twin Peaks, she is the heroine on which the intrigue is built, but that we almost never see. By reading a few pages of her diary, she invites us into her world, just as the mix invites the reader to look more closely at this magazine, words and images echoing in their mind.

AM Studio is a collective of music producers with different backgrounds, skills, styles and approaches of the music composition. 

We also work with an international network of other composers for projects that require it.

With this variety of talents, we are able to propose tailor-made compositions that make every project singular and aligned with the client's vision and aesthetic.

@benoitb is a DJ and multi-faceted producer. As efficient as it is discreet, he traces his own path and always remains in search of new sound explorations. A strange fruit, cross-pollinated with strains of breakbeat, electro, techno, ambient and more, his sound defies the norms and standards that often hinder the innovative potency of contemporary electronics.

Originally from Paris’ outskirts, he moved to Berlin in 2015 where he founded his label Banlieue Records to promote a hybrid and new sound with artists who share his vision such as Mathis Ruffing, Aiwa, N1L, Nummer or D'Marc Cantu, helping him to define this specific and atypical sound.

In parallel, he released several EPs on labels such as Berceuse Heroique, Wisdom Teeth, Unthank or Into The Light. His project, under the alias of Al Jerry, co-produced with the London producer Gohan, was released last year on Optimo's sub-label AF Trax. A few projects will see the lights in the following month under new alias to cover one’s track.
