On my last night in my empty apartment, with the walls bare, furniture gone and acoustics nice, I made this recording of one of my favorite standards with my phone and guitar. I’ll miss you Manitoba, but I’ll be seeing you again soon.

I originally wrote this summer 2024 and then ended up hating and abandoning it. This fall, with some encouragement from my buddy Chris, I revisited it. The process of re-recording and arranging it actually helped me get over a new situation the way it did the first time when I wrote it. Anyways, everything is good but also sucks and all my music sucks but it's also okay and fine. Drink some water and eat your vitamin C and that's it. Don't forget!

Griefishing (duet version)

Lately I haven't been able to write anything that goes someplace. All of my songs get stuck in loops of two or three chords. They sound nice and are comfortable to play, but don't expand or develop.

Maybe it's because my dad's birthday is coming up. Grief to me feels like that too, getting caught in circles and unable to find the way out. Grief can be beautiful, but only in one small way, and it is scary to venture out of that. Like music, once I go beyond what I'm sure of, things can fall apart quickly. 

Anyways, I usually don't like when instrumental pieces are explained. This one felt necessary though, like a bit of a journal entry.

I allowed myself one take for each part, they're all improvised, just whatever came out. Recorded on my phone whilst lying in my bed with my melodica at 2:12 am EST.

Griefishing

When I was a child, I had an uncle who made my brother and I mixtapes and CDs. This song was on one of the CDs (the Daniel Johnston original version). Since first hearing it, it has been a song I always return to. To me it feels like that optical illusion of a duck and rabbit, except the duck is a sad song and the rabbit is a happy song. Depending on what's happening in my life I hear it so differently. (I like the fIREHOSE version too. I think maybe I was also inspired by that one.)

I don't think I'd feel capable of sharing my music at all if I hadn't encountered Daniel Johnston's work. I've been thinking about all of this a lot lately.

Walking_the_Cow

As an experiment to force writers/musical block, I gave myself a challenge that for 5 days in a row, I would sit down with my guitar and laptop, set a timer for 20 minutes and write something, including come up with the musical ideas. Most of this is one-take, and improvised. I was allowed to use my drum machine and guitar with digital effects. I aimed to do this for 10 days, but sometimes things just don't pan out. 

These were recorded from November 15-19, 2024. 

 The final track was an assignment I had to do for my clinical improv class for my Master's program. Featuring Chris on the glockenspiel. I felt it was fitting to include as the grand finale. 

Also I forgot to make a collage for the cover art so I drew a guitar from memory on the back of a value village receipt in Biblioteque Maissoneuve.
