Overtime at the dog track
Chasing hares for fun
Stadium lights are dimming now
Failing, one by one

He started out a fireman
In his younger days
His mind wandered from the job
It really was a blaze

He filled in holes for half the year

The wind is shaking his old house 

Like the wolf himself, is trying to blow it down

It's been 40 days and 40 nights 

Since the ground has last been dry 

He's seen record rainfall this year 

I guess it matches the fallen on hard times tears 

The weatherman is echoing all his fears

He says the river is gonna wash him away 

I know the sun don't shine on the same man all the time 

But damn can’t it give him a break? 

Jake's working hard to build himself a life

He's got an uphill battle in a mudslide 

When he makes it to the other side 

He’s gonna rest on easier days 

Until then, he don't pay no mind to the rain 

The wind is howling through the Eastern Moor 

Rattling the windows and slamming the doors 

Is it March or  April? He's not sure 

Its cats and dogs just the same 

Rolls up his sleeves and gets back to work,

 "It ain't ever so bad that it can't get worse"
