To say Shael ("Shy-Elle") loves house music is an understatement. An established figure of the Western Canadian underground dance scene for over two decades, Shael continues to bring her distinct style of DJing to countless events, radio shows, and notable festivals in Winnipeg and beyond.

While best known for her house selections, it's not unusual to hear a dash of UKG and breakbeats in her expertly-mixed sets, which range from deep, soulful grooves, to bompin', upbeat jams for maximum dance floor enjoyment.

In addition to DJing, Shael also collaborates with local artists/promoters to curate shows in Winnipeg with a focus on underground house music. She's passionate about bringing people together on the dance floor, and continues to foster connections with artists and music fans throughout the broader Canadian music community.

It brings our typical blend of melody and groove - the Studio 338 terrace is such an inspiring place to play anyways with the afternoon sun streaming through the glass roof, and the room gradually filled up as people arrived so the tracks build up in energy level throughout the mix. XYZ and When We Dip present the Selectors series, where we give our family of producers an opportunity to display their prowess behind the decks. Expect unreleased material from across the label collective, as well as classic gems and heady grooves from some of the underground's finest selectors.

We're thrilled to welcome Ian O'Donovan for episode 101 of XYZ Selectors. The prolific Irish producer and label veteran (check out the stunning Still Waters LP) gifts us with a magical mix, featuring his latest XYZ composition; a remix of Koelle & Reza Safinia's Reverie, released on September 29th.  

Staying true to his style, which made him a pillar of the label in the early years, Ian O'Donovan opens the track with a riding hat groove that lays on the bass progression. The iconic horn from the original mix is then unleashed, leading into a break where the harmony develops in full effect. O'Donovan finishes by adding an acid layer to the bass, an exclamation point to the already driving track.

I played a private party in Helsinki two weeks ago, it was at a villa by the sea, and it was a dark and stormy night. But inside it was warm and cozy, I played a three hour set in a a darkened upstairs room, and it was so lovely to have it full of people dancing the whole time. For Brooklyn duo Thomas Mullarney III and Jacob Gossett, AKA @beaconmusicnyc, dance music goes deeper than the somatic - it’s also an invitation to explore the labyrinthine potential of the cerebral. “We’ve always been drawn to abstract brush strokes in dance music,” they say, speaking toward how each mix of music is approached as if composing an artwork. “We used this mix for PLAYY. to reference some leftfield influences that were filtering into our writing: microtonality (“Meshwork” by Brendan Rincon), EBM, and drone.” The journey they take us on reflects these influences, shifting through “passages of tighter mixing, moments of pause and also some vinyl-only selects from our collection. Look out for music from our latest album, Along the Lethe, as well as brand new remixes we just dropped including Kölsch’s take on “Pay My Debts” and Midori Hirano’s remix of “Ostrich” feat. Colin Stetson.”

The recording from my set on the main stage, day 3 at Return to Rio 2023. 
Opening a day full of incredible music on the stage from Nick Warren, Amonita, Paris and some of Sydney's best artists from Frida, Samantha Loveridge, Andy Ef, Zankee Gulati and many more; and the first set the morning after a blistering 5 hour masterclass from Patrice Baumel. 

I took the opportunity to make the most of the 11am slot time and play some really beautiful up-beat melodic house, groovy deep house and all-around happy music for the opening slot of the day. 

Definitely the most fun I've had playing behind the decks in a long time!

Supported by top-tier artists and blessed with a voice that soothes souls near and far, she has charmed audiences across countries such as Australia, the USA, the UK, the Netherlands, Greece, Spain, Qatar, Mexico, Argentina, Jamaica, and her throughout her homeland, Canada. She's smashed through the glass ceiling with her music and collaborations, which have been signed to multiple prestigious labels. 

Amber's passion for spinning is not limited just there; not only does she travel everywhere but also runs an independent label Modern Agenda - an independent label home to producers who are being championed for their work in Progressive House, Techno and Melodic Techno, primarily.  

Amber launched the LIA Series in 2021, a series of guest mixes highlighting up-and-coming female and female-representing artists from around the globe. Amber has also been hosting Frisky Radio's Rogue Radio Show since 2017 and has been involved with The Canadian Juno Awards for many years now.  

With music coursing through every vein of hers; it's easy to see why Amber believes in its power to heal us all.
