Belfast’s Robin Wylie has long been twisting up heavy, analogue bass sounds, winning the ears of the likes of David Holmes along the way. After debuting on Ritual Poison with the swirling, hazy breaks of ‘St Paul’s’ on last year’s ‘Pharmakon’ compilation, he arrives full force with four-tracker ‘What is Zero?’
Built around booming subs, bubbling acid and ecstatic female vocals, the title track highlights Wylie’s knack for dancefloor fusion, peak time electro seeped in subtle rave flavours. ‘Pulse Track’ draws inspiration from somewhere between 90s techno and bleep, adding a modern percussive drive and bass weight. The electro-breaks of ‘Shadows In The Sunlight’ serves up a journey of tension and release, building then breaking in waves of 303. And ‘Kid Dynamite’ earns its title, low end exploding under heavy breakbeat house riding crunchy acid, whoops and warping effects.
Artwork come from label favourite Alec Jagodzinski, whose 2000 AD-inspired imagery accentuates the EP’s sonic evocation of resistance to an encroaching dystopian future.

'Do Androids Dream of Key Lime Pie' is a nod to the unabashed glory days of ‘90s hardcore and frantic sampling. Dubbed-out low ends make way for dusty jungle breaks.

Ambient Babestation Meltdown returns to Optimo Music for a second collaborative release, this time with Bristol's sound-obsessive Borai. Their three-track Human Material EP collides electro, UKG and techno with early ‘90s hardcore to make for something as high impact as it is high quality. 

South East London's Ambient Babestation Meltdown was last on this label in July 2022 with JBS. Since then, the Creative Director of Peckham's cult Rye Wax has continued to carve out her singular sound. All of it draws on her love of sci-fi and passion for outsider sounds from the worlds of Italo, house and hardcore and is made all the more unique with the addition of her deadpan yet sultry vocals up top. 

Borai meanwhile is a long-time underground mainstay with credits on cult independent labels like Hardcore Energy from his hometown of Bristol, as well as Off Beat and Room2 based in Germany and London respectively. A jungle head at heart, he has ventured into dub, techno and plenty in between as a DJ and producer but also when cutting dubplates at Bristol’s Dubstudio.  

And that is exactly what the pair do here in an EP packed with cyberpunk narrative. It sonically depicts the uprising of subservient robots who grow all too sentient for the underclasses and fight back to mend their broken hearts. 

Opener 'My Heart My Motherboard' is the sound of prime tech house, slick Drexciyan electro and fresh UKG all existing in perfect harmony. The mid-tempo beats have an infectious bounce, the pixelated synth motifs are futuristic and the bassline glows warm. 'Your Malware' explores much more textural acid techno with edgy beats and anxiety-inducing synths. Warped 303s loop tightly as the punchy drums thumb out a rhythm and the yelping vocals add a sense of urgency. Finally, 'Do Androids Dream of Key Lime Pie' is a nod to the unabashed glory days of ‘90s hardcore and frantic sampling when each track sounded like four different joints rolled into one. It takes you up, then down the round and round with a dubbed out low end and edgy stabs that make way for dusty jungle breaks and sure-fire dance floor destruction.

Sam is the founder and a resident at https://soundcloud.com/pumpingvelvet, a London-based Queer dance party that takes place bi-monthly at LGBTQ+ venue Dalston Superstore.

Sam grew up in London, his tastes moulded by the city’s diverse dance music scenes: from childhood trips to Notting Hill Carnival, to formative dancefloor experiences at nights like FWD, Trash and Süd Electronic. He brings these influences to his DJing in sets that span a broad gamut of genres, tied together by a love for big drums, pop melodies and sleaze.   

Frustrated by the lack of queer spaces where you could hear both a Svek record and Kylie in the same night, Sam founded Pumping Velvet in 2018, driven by the firm belief that any barriers erected between pop and ‘serious’ dance music are entirely artificial and that there’s no such thing as a guilty pleasure. It’s this same ethos and disregard for boundaries that makes his DJ so thrilling.

"My warm-up mix is a zany trip through my mind for an hour and a peek into what a solo set from me at the festival might look like — 100% KL special low-frequency version. I’m happy to be showing more specific strains of what I do in B2Bs this year, and grateful for the opportunity to spin it out at the speed of sound in this mix. Influenced by the never-ending cycles of violence, corruption, and fascistic decline we’re forced to exist within on Earth, as well as the way music can be both a communicator of liberatory ideas and also a pacifying force to maintain the status quo of white supremacist capitalist patriarchy. The strategic adversary is fascism - free everywhere and destroy what destroys you. A better world is possible.

There's lots of music within visionary worldbuilders and friends and an upcoming release from myself, Johnny Zoloft, and Gladstone Deluxe entitled 'Total Body Extension'. Keep your heart and mind open - I hope this mix can soundtrack some moments of discord, headbanging, and hip-moving."

gullydoctor releases their new EP, essence on May 30th. The former member of Dublin's notorious Sim Simma collective pushes sounds from The Caribbean & South America. With many years of jazz training under his belt, he brings that same adventurous spirit to both his productions and DJing, blending these influences with UK Garage, Hardcore, Jungle, Footwork, Jersey Club and beyond.

Our feature premiere 'Prince Heavy Shocker' samples the retro-funk 1994 track, 'Dream On Dreamer' by The Brand New Heavies before racing into jungle territory. Constantly evolving with rich textures and speedy grooves, gullydoctor rides out the track with a sultry guitar solo.
