An other self-generated piece, using eight "duophonic" synthesizers with random and dynamic natural harmonics additive synthesis.

The Audio Units plug-ins used in live performance, responsible for sound synthesis and random spatialization, were built with SonicBirth. The plug-ins patching and self-generated live performance is done in Plogue Bidule.

The 1st order B-Format file out of Bidule was converted to stereo in Nuendo using the Harpex-B decoder with a setting of two back-to-back cardioids (180° angle) and spaced by 20 cm.

Just scale, 44 Hz base frequency.

Harmonices Mundi (2014.03.10) is part of a series of experiments on algorithmic composition where the random number generator is the main compositional tool. In this piece, random number generators control everything that can be heard: the timbre of the sounds obtained by additive synthesis, the notes duration and sequences, and their spatialization in Ambisonics B-Format. All in all, more than a hundred random number generators are used in Harmonices Mundi. The Ambisonic B-Format mix is encoded in Ambisonic Stereo UHJ. Harmonices Mundi borrows its title from Johannes Kepler book, published in 1619, on the solar system planetary motions and mathematical relationships found in nature and music.

A Year In Chaos, epilogue

This file uses binaural encoding: it is meant to be played back on headphones.

For people familiar with Ambisonics: since my stochastic panners are horizontal only, I actually used the horizontal "V" channel of the 2nd order as a stand-in for the 1st order vertical "Z" channel. I don't know how well this height information translates to binaural, but it did make some nice moving color blobs in the Harpex-B interface while it was converting the B-Format to binaural...

The 1st order B-Format file out of Bidule was converted to binaural in Nuendo using the Harpex-B decoder with the "Kemar 1" HRTF set and the "diffuse" EQ setting. Conversion to FLAC was done with XLD.

In this piece, random number generators control everything that can be heard: the timbre of the sounds obtained by additive synthesis, the notes duration and sequences, and their spatialization in Ambisonics B-Format. The B-Format mix was decoded to 5.1 surround. The 5.1 version was downmixed to stereo for Soundcloud.

Pizza Automate (automaton or robot) is an assemblage of nine slices of stochastic electronic music rendered using a combination of SonicBirth and Plogue Bidule on macOS. The nine slices were assembled in Reaper.

This is a stereo version of a 5th order Ambisonic spatialization designed for multi-loudspeaker playback.
