If I have to describe this mix in a single sentence it would be: Percussive rhythms bind diverse genres into an unpredictable journey of danceable bangers.

3024: What DJ inspires you at the moment / has inspired you throughout the years and why?
A DJ that inspires me at the moment is Tasha. Something that really admires me is when people are good at being versatile, and she is one of them.

3024: What are you working on / what have you got forthcoming?
I wish I could say that I'm working on music that's releasing on 3024 (hopefully in the future :P) but right now I'm working on coming up with exciting line-up ideas for a new venue that's opening in April in Amsterdam.

Purelink have been described more than once as an "ambient boy band." (They themselves say "jam band.") It's not meant dismissively—the American trio purposefully mean to function as a band, even if their main instruments are laptops. Ambient might not quite cut it as a descriptor, though. The group's music crosses eras and scenes, touching on the late '90s clicks & cuts boom as well as the billowy ambient techno put out by labels like 3XL, West Mineral Ltd. and NAFF. 

Their most recent LP, Signs, released on enigmatic imprint Peak Oil (and one of our favourite albums of 2023), is especially impressive, made of stuttering rhythms and glassy textures. In other words, it's ambient-not-ambient. While members Concave Reflection, kindtree and Millia have all made excellent music on their own, something special happens when they come together.

Purelink's RA Podcast is another stellar contribution to our post-New Year's tradition, where we highlight a more laid-back sound to soothe weary minds and frazzled brain cells after the heavy holiday celebrations. This is 90-plus minutes of intricately textured downtempo, dub techno and even UK garage, all cut through with a floaty, almost drowsy quality, with plenty of exclusives and unreleased cuts from the likes of Nick León, James K, Downstairs J and more. It highlights Purelink's position as a bridger of worlds, sounds and tempos.

"The first Club Shy was held in [East London strip club] Metropolos. I would find that I think I am too shy to even go to a strip club. I was like, fuck it, if I do it myself, I can get over that, finally! They also have a certain glamour in my mind. The venues are really important to me when I am thinking about where we're going to do the different Club Shy parties. They are a big part of that experience, and I’m a kid in a candy store, basically. I am just picking what I think would be the best in my imagination.

"When I am thinking about the club nights, it’s an experiment. I think the only way that I can move forward with confidence and not, like, anxiety about anyone actually coming [to Club Shy parties] is just be like ‘oh, it's an experiment!’ I also realised I wasn’t even going out clubbing anymore. Part of it was that I was like, fuck, I'm not going out at all, because I am always on stage or whatever. If I’m in control of who is coming, it gave me a bit more power. I can let loose and rediscover the club in a different way through the events, and there’s DJs that I’ve heard and I didn’t get the chance to see, and this way I could actually book them and put them on and meet them. It’s kind of how most club promoters end up being promoters because it’s like glorified meet and greets.

"My love for a remix comes from my DJ background. It definitely comes from the reality of being in a lot of clubs! This means I always want to hear different versions of my world. Especially when I was making the album ‘Nymph’, I was thinking more about the radio and how my music might sound on there. So then having that opportunity to make ‘Nymph_o’ and expand what those tracks were capable of was amazing. Sometimes when you’re making a project, it’s so condensed and it’s so in line in terms of how everything complements each other. And then when you make a remix, it’s purely about the singular world of that track."

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. a music maker with too much sincerity and a passion for sampling, film, and leftist politics

Q. What drew you to the music scene in the beginning and where do you hope to see it in the future?
A. Looking back at my life, I think everything from my birth led me on this path towards music. It was my first love. But as an only child, my experience with music growing up was always very solitary. I yearned to be part of a community radio station with Iikeminded music nerds, and it was working for a radio station eventually during my undergraduate that brought me toward DJing and rave culture. Back then I never thought I could do this full time, but once I got the chance to make a living doing this, I realized the scene was far from perfect, in fact it's very exploitative. I hope in the future we can find a way to fairly compensate music makers for the incredible gift of music they bestow upon the world, without becoming beholden to corrupt corporate & military interests. Artists can be hyper individualistic and self-interested, and I hope we can get better at looking out for each other instead of just our own paycheques.

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. I wanted to present a different side of myself to international audiences on such a wonderful mix platform. Perhaps people outside of my home city of Toronto are less familiar with my downtempo sets, but it's been a significant part of my wheelhouse for years, and have gained even wider affection from me since I started doing a downtempo party in Toronto last year. Like I always say, 80-100bpm is the most natural tempo for extended human body movements. I also liked the idea of doing a mix that doesn't build in a predictable way, instead it waxes and wanes like the natural rhythm of life. So many of my favourite mixes build and release tension in a way that's very satisfying to listen to, the sounds intensify to a frenzy before disintegrating into nothingness. I wanted to play with that rise and fall and mix downtempo and dub with double time d&b in a non-linear way that is evocative of our most precious memories and tells stories we've only seen in dreams. Downtempo and dub also seemed like the perfect genres to play in the 100th mix for Juanita's, and in the lead up to my fav April holiday. :) I hope the listeners enjoy it.

Firstly, thanks to Dj wiggles for the opportunity to contribute to the Kinetic series <3

The mix is experimental and long-form, exploring ambient meditative selections as well as darker bass-heavy and textured tracks from across the bpm spectrum, with several tracks warped far from their original bpm. The pace, mood and energy fluctuate. Some tracks emerge quickly, like intrusive thoughts or distractions, others are  given more time to breathe merging into the mix more subtly. This reflects the often unpredictable and challenging nature of losing and regaining a sense of presence and control. The mix has a symbolic cyclical nature, returning to particular percussive sounds and motifs as it progresses. 

Many philosophies motivate me to DJ including the belief everything is connected to the collective and sound exists at that intersection, it is a universally connecting force that exists at the boundaries where mind and body meet the world. All creative practices are intrinsically informed by the personal experiences of their creator/s. This imbues them with narrative and gives them the potential for human connection at these boundaries. 

The title of the mix “decompression” alludes to the pursuit of emotive release. It is a response to life at present - from harrowing world events, to personal challenges and introspection. I hope people enjoy and connect with it, perhaps finding some peace of mind by its end.

I started the Fortune Sessions nights in 2019. Before then I threw a lot of house parties. When I had to move into a house unsuitable for big gatherings I began looking for a venue. 

The Fortune of War is a venue located on Brighton beach. It has an intimate dance floor space indoors for winter events and then a big outdoor space for parties in summer. It’s well-loved by locals, with a friendly and laid-back vibe. For a grassroots night it felt like the perfect fit. 

The first session went well but then Covid hit just before the second event was due to happen. I was disappointed but it gave me time to develop the aim and concept behind the events. I also acquired a better sound system to power them. The second session finally took place in March 2022 and two years on I’m preparing for the 15th!

The Fortune Sessions have always had a multi-genre format with a commitment to diversity behind the decks, and a low-key unpretentious vibe. The venue being a pub rather than a club means that the events draw a crowd of dedicated ravers as well as people just out for a good time. Not everyone who enjoys dance music vibes with the club environment, so I’m glad to be able to platform niche genres in an unintimidating space to a wider audience. The nights being free entry also means its more accessible, giving the opportunity for new musical discovery. On a few occasions I’ve been asked “what IS this music??” by people on the dancefloor.

I’m happy to be showing more specific strains of what I do in B2Bs this year, and grateful for the opportunity to spin it out at the speed of sound in this mix. Influenced by the never-ending cycles of violence, corruption, and fascistic decline we’re forced to exist within on Earth, as well as the way music can be both a communicator of liberatory ideas and also a pacifying force to maintain the status quo of white supremacist capitalist patriarchy. Downtempo oddities, askew rhythms and bass heavy excursions transport us to the sway-state in the latest Off-Kilter mix, served to us by one of Bristol’s finest and most respected DJs, Farrell. 

The tracks in this mix reflect the Downtempo, Dub and Techno adjacent sound that remains at the forefront of Bristol long running Sunday session, Under Heavy Manners; slow in speed yet blissed with energy and weaved together with precision.

A vital tenet in Bristol’s ecosystem of parties and records, Chris Farrell has spent most of his life channelling the right music to the right people and places. His role behind the counter of some of the city’s most legendary record shops has kept him close to club music’s ever-evolving frontiers, all the while amassing the particular sounds which fit his own exacting tastes.

His long-established record shop and label Idle Hands served to join the dots between all kinds of scenes and sub-genres within and outside of Bristol, but the establishment of new label Devil’s Work points to a more focused platform reflecting the music Farrell stitches together as a DJ. Genre tags are a fools errand, but what he reaches for in his particular path between techno, electro, breakbeat, house, garage, minimal and more is the attitude of rave - a particular way of working the tunes with fearless intent and keeping the energy up.

There’s a stripped-back, bass-loaded sensibility to his sound which chimes with Bristol’s soundsystem tradition and his prior work with Idle Hands, not to mention a deep love and knowledge of dub, but the music Farrell plays out is firmly fixed on moving forwards. Splitting the difference between brand new cuts, his own long-cultivated collection and the odd deeper dig from the 90s, the fundamental is physicality and that elusive quality which separates an average club track from an outstanding one.

Alongside steady club and festival appearances taking in respected top tier events and off-grid sessions alike, Farrell maintains a steady radio presence on Bristol stations SWU and Noods as a direct demonstration of where his sound is steered at any given time. With a life so steeped in seeking out and sharing music, Farrell’s authority comes without question, and his sets celebrate the links between the freshest tunes and the past three decades of dance music culture.

For RE:WARM 002 we head back to 1992 and over to San Francisco to bring you a timeless house record by Daisy Glow.

Daisy Glow is the collaboration between San Francisco house producers Mouse & Kelix Williams who formed as a spin-off from their live act Tasti Box. Their Daisy Glow guise which previously came out on ZoëMagik Records gave them the chance to make music inspired by full moon raves on the beach and Sunday afternoon raves in Golden Gate Park. In essence a musical reflection of the vibe and sound of San Francisco in the early 90’s. From these sessions came the Give It All EP. Over the last couple of years the EP has made it’s way back into a number of DJ’s record bags and was previously supported by the likes of Sasha and John Digweed back in the 90’s.

Sounding as relevant now as it did in 1992 the three tracks that comprise the EP sit easily in any house set to this day with their old school house sound. Each track having its own identity and all three being house music of the highest order.
