Growing up in the 1930s in Memphis, Tennessee, Phil Larimore was the ultimate Boy Scout—able to read maps, use a compass, and traverse wild swamps and desolate canyons. His other great skill was riding horses. Landing on the Anzio beachhead in February 1944, Larimore was put in charge of an Ammunition Pioneer Platoon in the 3rd Infantry Division. Their job: deliver ammunition to the frontline foxholes. Dr. Walt Larimore discusses his father’s story told in his book At First Light.

March Madness, college basketball playoffs, is right around the corner. Ret. USAF Colonel Bill Rutledge discusses the remarkable story of James Naismith who was the creator and founder of basketball. Naismith then founded the University of Kansas basketball program in 1898. Naismith retired from coaching basketball in 1910 and even though he was in his mid 40’s, he joined the Kansas National Guard where he served as a chaplain to the troops fighting Pancho Villa in 1916.

 Fred Wiese grew up during the Depression. 102-year-old Fred Wiese just passed on. We will honor Wiese with a rebroadcast of one of his interviews. Fred shares stories of his childhood and joining the Army in December of 1941. In 1943 he joined the Army Air Corps. Fred discusses his mantra of “work hard, study hard, don’t get into trouble and don’t wash out.” Fred shares the story of his first loop in a training plane.

 WWII B-17 bomber pilot Fred Wiese recently passed on. He flew 35 missions over Europe. We are rebroadcasting an interview with Wiese where he talked about some of his missions. Wiese shared his thoughts about Curtis, his co-pilot, who after 30 missions together piloted his own bomber. On Curtis’ 32nd mission, his plane was probably hit by flak and went down. Even after all these years, Fred asked the question, "Why do good guys go down?"

April 18, 1942, Jimmy Doolittle and his raiders flew medium size bombers off aircraft carriers in the Pacific to bomb Japan in retaliation for the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. At the age of 45 Jimmy Doolittle was the old man of the mission. Most were young men in their teens and early twenties. We are rebroadcasting an interview with Jimmy Doolittle’s granddaughter.
