Metodi Hristov first Glasgow Underground release back in May (“Step Outside”) was cited by Matthias Tanzmann as his Number 1 record of the Ibiza season 2014. And it wasn’t only the Moonharbour main man who was all over Metodi’s alternative piano anthem, it was simply huge this summer, hammered by the likes of Seth Troxler, Audiojack, Detroit Swindle, Ramon Tapia, DJ T, Stefano Ritteri and Sidney Charles.

Following on from that, things have got bigger and better for the Bulgarian producer. He’s just had a top 5 tech house record with “More Than Ever” on Stefano Noferini’s Deeperfect label and has a killer release due on Audiojack’s always on-point Gruuv label. Here he teams up with Lyon’s Spencer K to deliver another tech-edged weapon for Glasgow Underground.

And if there was ever a record that did what it says on the tin it’s this one. “Basic Tricks” is raw house music at its very best. The kind of house that’s always worked: great beats, a simple hooky groove and the kind of wonky electronic noises that sound ace when your dancefloor enhancement potions are working their best magic.

While “Basic Tricks” might be the most immediate and dj-friendly cut on the release, “Bug’s Life” is Hristov’s most adventurous work to date and is arguably the more brilliant of the two. The clever soundscape is so impeccably put together you’d be forgiven for thinking you were listening to a Four Tet record. However, this isn’t some left-field work, the groove here is so driving, yet also so warm and organic that nothing sounds clichéd and it works amazingly on the dancefloor.

It's been a happy spectacle watching our friends at Lobster Theremin grow into the pink-bellied beast we see before us today. Their following has grown almost as quickly as their roster, snowballing via a release schedule that's as strong as it is frequent: a consistently welcome serve-up of Motor City-inspired house, dreamscape acid and narcotic techno. 

Late last year, Camp Lobster drilled deeper into the spectrum with Mörk, the label's darkling sub-imprint and home to its gloomiest techno. This week they inaugurate a new imprint, Distant Hawaii – a summer off-shoot for beach-coasting sunshine house. And its first release is exactly that: a wonderfully deep debut for Manchester man Hidden Spheres. 'Waiting' is our pick of the litter: a glowing thumper that's all butter-melt Rhodes lines, ecstatic vocal whoops, and tons of playful percussion. The perfect summer jam, basically – coming to a terrace near you very soon.

PREMIERE: Harrison BDP - Parallax [Happiness Therapy]

Manuel Años, AKA Psyk, has much to lay claim to within his relatively short career, having already played at Berghain, Tresor and Stockholm's Fabriken, as well as having himself as a focal point of Madrid's techno scene. His approach seeks to continually purify and refine his sound, and with 'Distance' - his debut release on Mote-Evolver - he melds together new forms of rhythm and expression with the kind of maximal composition and hard energy that the label has honed. The four tracks of 'Distance' pulse, pound and thump their way forward while also showcasing a distinct metabolism that develops throughout this varied release.

The A-side, beginning with 'Distance', establishes a direct, compelling energy that's carried forward by echoing synths that become underlaid with an ever-growing bass. Envelopment is the true characteristic of 'Distance' as it compresses its energy, channels it forward and establishes a strong sense of momentum perfect for any number of following tracks. 'Isolate', the A2 track, properly expresses its title with isolated, intense pulses of warped bass that eventually blend into one another to deliver a highly hypnotic, immersive feel. This sense of repetition creates a spiraling sense of progression that hooks onto the listener and draws them in.

'Rdmn”, the first track on the B-side, brings in a sense of experimentation as it uses different percussive patterns while it searches for its moment to strike. The dented funk of the main bass line ebbs and flows until it finds its groove and immerses itself in it. On the heels of this comes 'Main', the final track that is no less saturated with energy than all the rest. It's pure switched-on dance floor thunder, and surges forward with a straight-forward simplicity. As Psyk's first release on Mote-Evolver, 'Distance' establishes the momentum both for the budding Spanish producer as well as for his supercharged productions to come.
