Ozbolt is the moniker of Germany-based artist Andy Ozbolt, who also records as Andy Aquarius. Andy’s music has appeared on labels such as Hush Hush, Constellation Tatsu, 7k! and Shimmering Moods to name but a few. His work as Andy Aquarius tends to focus on his Celtic Harp compositions whereas Ozbolt is a tribute to his Croatian heritage, capturing the essence of external landscapes and offering sonic reflections of specific places in time. In an album shaped by adventure, wonder, and the ineffable essence of lived experience, here Andy presents us with his Whitelabrecs debut Chasyng Drakens. This latest work stems from a transformative journey through the Drakensberg mountains of South Africa, blending the organic textures of field recordings with the ethereal resonance of the Celtic harp.

The album’s origins trace back to a chance experiment—setting up a rental harp in a coastal tree to let the wind play its strings. The resulting tones were so captivating that Andy sought to preserve them, leading to the spontaneous collection of field recordings throughout his travels. Upon returning to Berlin, these atmospheric recordings became the foundation for Chasyng Drakens, inspiring a flurry of creativity that saw most of the album come together in just two weeks. Layers of harp, from muted plucks to synthesized tones, intertwine with analog synths, rhythmic samples, and contributions from South African musicians on saxophone, flute and voice.

At its heart, Chasyng Drakens is a time capsule, as an attempt to translate the profound solitude and discovery of solo travel into an immersive sonic tapestry. While each track stands alone, the unifying presence of field recordings pulls them into a singular, cohesive world, evoking the shifting landscapes and fleeting moments of Andy’s journey.

This album serves both to document space and time, and as an invitation to open up a portal into the wonder of the unknown, and get a sense of the place and circumstance it was made. Ozbolt has captured here the raw joy of exploration, weaving sound and memory into a musical map of an extraordinary adventure, complete with photography captured on the trip. The rest of the story is for our own imagination.

In the modern digital era, people are losing touch with tangible reality and living nature, plunging into an artificial, synthetic, and virtual environment. The naturalness and uniqueness of simple things are becoming rarities.

This album was first released on Élan Vital Recordings on September 1, 2021, then was re-released on Rhymes Music in 2022, and now, slightly reworked (brought to perfection), is finally coming out on Chitra Records.

Demon Like Me

This is a contribution to the Disquiet Junto project (see below). 

While listening to the many excellent contributions to last week’s Disquiet Junto, I found Stray Wool’s „Bedding“ (https://soundcloud.com/everythingdies/bedding-disquiet0472) highly interesting and promising for a collaboration. 

When I first got my Cocoquantus, I started recording random bits and pieces for use in later pieces, and the right-side is an unaltered version of one of these recordings. I added EQ automation and a small metal noise with a lot of reverb.

** Disquiet Junto Project 0473: Placebo Effect**

The Assignment: Record the second third of a trio that others will complete.

Step 1: This week’s Disquiet Junto project is the second in a sequence intended to encourage and reward asynchronous collaboration. This week you’ll be adding music to a pre-existing track, which you will source from the previous week’s Junto project (disquiet.com/0472). Note that you aren’t creating a duet — you’re creating the second third of what will eventually be a trio. Keep this in mind. Leave space for what is yet to come.

Step 2: The plan is for you to record a short and original piece of music, on any instrumentation of your choice, as a complement to the pre-existing track. First, however, you must select the piece of music to which you will be adding your own music. There are tracks by 68 musicians in all to choose from, 62 as part of this playlist:

To select a track, you can listen through all that and choose one, or you can use a random number generator to select a number from 1 to 68, the first 62 being numbered in the above SoundCloud playlist, and 62-68 being the ones linked to above.

Note: It’s fine if more than one person uses the same original track as the basis for their piece.

It is strongly encouraged that you look through the discussion on the Lines forum, because many tracks include additional contextual information there:

Step 3: Record a short piece of music, roughly the length of the piece of music you selected in Step 2. Your track should complement the piece from Step 2, and leave room for an eventual third piece of music. When composing and recording your part, don’t alter the original piece of music at all, except to pan the original fully to the left if it hasn’t been panned left already. In your finished audio track, your new part should be panned fully to the right. To be clear: the track you upload won’t be your piece of music alone; it will be a combination of the track from Step 2 and yours.

Step 4: Also be sure, when done, to make the finished track downloadable, because it will be used by someone else in a subsequent Junto project.

Step 5: You can contribute more than one track this week. Usually Junto projects have a one-track-per-participant limit. You can do up to two total. For the second, it’s appreciated if you try to work with a solo that no one else has used yet ( look at the project’s post on Lines, linked to in these instructions, or to the project playlist, which will be posted here once tracks start coming in). The goal is for many as people as possible to benefit from the experience of being part of an asynchronous collaboration. After a lot of detailed instruction, that is the spirit of this project.
