Well…. what do you make of „Girl holding something innocuous just to conveniently show off a little too much boob“ and „Dreamy, ever-so-slightly blurry, with saturated yellows and greens“? 

’kay. So: Boobs and Dreamy. 

I thought of 70ies Soft Porn, David Hamilton, light white summer dresses, Silvia Kristel and blurry camera lenses. Pretty sticky stuff. 

I took a drone base, some typical harmonies and some of sixth-cords. It’s all a bit in-yer-face, i know. 

So, without further ado: Ambient Soft Porn!

Only sine waves. 5 seconds intro for the first voice, then 10 seconds for the second voice, after 15 seconds we’re allowed to alter the sounds. 
Tough one. 

My first idea were slightly detuned voices (up to 50 c with an very, very slow LFO). I tried and failed horribly. 

But then another idea struck: theme, second theme, third theme: Wasn’t that Bach? There was nothing about pitch variations in the instructions, right? So I used some composing software for the layout of a short fughetta. The Sine instrument is of course an organ, I chose three Native Instruments B3.

Disquiet Junto Project 0062: Life of Sine

This week's project involves making music from the basic building block of sound: the sine wave. 

You will compose and record a piece of music using just three different sine waves, and nothing else — well, nothing else in terms of source material, but the waves can, after the piece has gotten underway, be transformed by any means you choose. 

These are the steps:

Step 1: Devise which three sine waves you will employ. They should be different from each other in some evident way.

Step 2: The track should open with just one of the sine waves. 

Step 3: Add the second sine wave at 5 seconds. 

Step 4: Add the third sine wave at 10 seconds.

Step 4: Only at 15 seconds should you begin to in any way manipulate any of the source waves.

Deadline: Monday, March 11, 2013, at 11:59pm wherever you are.

Length: Your finished work should be between 1 and 4 minutes in length.

I re-recorded the given gregorian chant in a nice cozy plush cat tower (our cat love it). 

Took that recording, de-reverbed it (yes, there’s a plugin for that). Then added reverb, more reverb, different brands of reverb, some layers of different pitch, even more reverbs. Recorded, mixed and treated in Gleetchlab.

Disquiet Junto Project 0063: Gregorian-orian-ian

This week’s project involves the role of architectural spaces in the composition of music. It is a shared-sample project that takes a piece of Gregorian chant as its source material.

These are the steps:

Step 1: Download this OGG audio file that contains a recording of monks singing Gregorian chant at the Abbey of Sant’Antimo in Italy:

Step 2: Play back that recording loudly in a highly reverberant space and record it. Your best bet may be a bathroom.

Step 3: Create a new piece of music using the recording you just made as your primary source material. You cannot add any new source material. You can manipulate the audio recording as you please, but restrict yourself to effects that simulate echo, such as delay, reverb, and looping. You may also use the original OGG file, but only in addition to your own recording of it being played back in the reverberant space.

Oh boy: How exiting! 00:01! Got the starting piece! 

Some production notes: I really liked the original piece, so there was not much to add. Tried to concentrate on different frequencies, so a some bass (NI Scarbee MM), also tripled the original track, EQ’ed, pitched, ducked. Added some pianos and EQs. That’s it. 

The first 8 seconds from the original piece were silent… so I added some reverse reverb/noise thingie.

Disquiet Junto Project 0065: Piano Overlay

This week’s project’s theme is asynchronous collaboration — in other words, making things together separately. We will make new compositions based on short, discrete, randomly assigned segments of a single, 60-minute piano composition. Collectively these will form a longer, collaborative suite.

These are the steps:

Step 1: You will be making a piece of music by adding new sounds to a pre-existing track. You can download that pre-existing track, an original piano composition by Jared Brickman, here:

Step 2: When you go to the following URL, at kenzak.com, you will be assigned, immediately, a specific section of the longer Brickman piece. This kenzak.com URL will randomly pull up two pieces of information. The first piece of information is the start point of your segment. The second is the length of your segment (which will be between 1 and 4 minutes):

One note: There will be overlap between assigned pieces. This was a conscious decision, informed by the overall theme of overlaying, which is explained further in step 4, below.

Step 3: Extract your assigned segment from the pre-existing track.

Step 4: Compose a new piece of music by adding elements to the pre-existing track. You can add anything you choose, with the exception of voice. Limit yourself to two additional elements. The original track should be audible throughout your new composition.

I didnt know the late Jeffrey Melton in person - but it’s an honor to contribute to his music through this project. 

Took a piece of Jeffreys „Unwind“-Session (around 11:00). All drum-parts and several soundbits were made by several copies of the original, which I EQ’d, granulated, de-verbed, re-pitched and mangled in several ways. Added some NI Absynth 5 and Abletons Operator.

Disquiet Junto Project 0066: Communing with Nofi

This week’s project is a tribute to the late Jeffrey Melton, the talented musician, best known on SoundCloud and Twitter as @nofi. Melton passed away a few days ago, on March 30, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he lived with his wife and seven-year-old son. He was 42. Melton had been involved with the Disquiet Junto since the very first Junto project, back in January 2012, and he early on volunteered to create a Twitter list of the handles of participating Junto members.

The theme of this project, the 66th in the weekly Disquiet Junto series, is “posthumous collaboration”: communing through music.

These are the steps:

Step 1: Download the following live session of Jeffrey Melton performing. It was recorded in June of last year. Warning: it’s fairly sizable, at over 350 MBs: nofi.org/media/2012-06-15-Unwind-live-session.mp3

Step 2: The track is quite long, so select a segment of between 2 and 5 minutes. The best way to go about this might be to do it at random (just put the needle down, as it were), but of course feel free to listen at length and select a favorite section.

Step 3: Once you have your extracted segment, set the opening of the track to fade in.

Step 4: Set the ending of the track to cut out suddenly.

Step 5: Listen to it several times, to get to know it.

Step 6: Record yourself performing live along with the segment you have selected. Any instrumentation is fine. Just no voice. Be sure to play alone for approximately 10 seconds after Melton’s performance cuts off.

Deadline: Monday, April 8, 2013, at 11:59pm wherever you are.

Length: Your finished work should be the length determined in steps 2 and 6 above.

This track is a posthumous collaboration with Jeffrey Melton, aka Nofi, who passed away on March 30, 2013. It was recorded live in April 2013 atop a June 2012 Melton live recording.

I basically had 4 tracks with different effects that I switched between kind of haphazardly. one with delay, one pitch shifted down 6 half steps, one with LFO and resonator, and the original track which I was going to leave alone but then I decided to make it sound like a clock radio with saturation and EQ.

**Production Notes**

This is a remix of Disquiet Junto piece Policing the Dock ([https://soundcloud.com/zoundsabar/policing-the-dock-disquiet0474]), an asynchronous collaboration by Zoundsabar ([https://soundcloud.com/zoundsabar/]), Chaonaut ([https://soundcloud.com/chaonaut]) and Dave Gibbs ([https://soundcloud.com/david-l-gibbs])

First I extracted four-bar loops from the original source. Second, I treated them in the Kontakt Ensemble „Cycles“  from Slater & Ash, which is perfect if you want pulses that can go on a grid. Third it was arranging way many bits and finding some parts that could form a melody, which took at the longest. Lastly I added two shakers and some simple drums. 

Normally, it would sit there for a week, but as it’s the Disquiet Junto, the piece has to go tonight. Oh, and the intro reminded me of the chase sequence in detective story, hence the name.

**Disquiet Junto Project 0475: Low End (4 of 3)**

The Assignment: Remix a trio by doing forensics on its component parts.

Step 1: This week will involve remixing. The past three weeks, we’ve produced a large number of trios. These have been the result of a sequence of steps: first someone made a solo, then someone else turned it into a duet, and then someone else added a third element, making a completed work in the form of a trio. This week you will be remixing one of these trios, which you will source from the previous week’s Junto project (disquiet.com/0475).

Step 2: First, you must select the piece of music you will remixing. There are over 65 tracks in all to choose from, 62 as part of this playlist:

To select a track, you can listen through all that (warning: it’s a lot) and choose one, or you can use a random number generator. (Note: it’s fine if more than one person uses the same original track as the basis for their piece.)

Step 3: The simply stated goal is to remix the trio resulting from your selection process in Step 2. However, it is strongly encouraged that you locate the duet and the solo on which the trio is founded, and that you then employ those three tracks in your work. (In past projects like this one, some musicians have essentially extracted the other half of the duet by “removing” the solo from it, and done the same with the trio versus the duet.)

Step 4: As with last week, you can contribute more than one track this week. You can do up to two total. If you choose to do a second, you should preferably try to use a duet track that no one else has used yet. The goal is for many as people as possible to benefit from the experience of being part of an asynchronous collaboration. After a lot of detailed instruction, that is the spirit of this project.
