Analog Dakar Club for Radio Alhara 14.05.22

We begin with Senegal of course with the Orchester Laye Thiam, born of a temporary schism within the Star Band of Ibra Kasse and led by the trumpeter of the same name, before his departure for Congo where he accompanied it seems James Brown in Kinshasa. Then it's the spellbinding Poly Rhythmo drummer Danialou Sagbohan for a maddening Afro-Cuban Latin track. His friend Gnonnas Pedro, the greatest singer in West Africa (with Ballaké), continues with his combination where the guitar replaces the piano of the descarga, the same goes for the next track, by Sam Mangwana, another golden voice that sang for both Franco and Tabu Ley Rochereau, the two great rivals of Congolese music, for his only album recorded in Portuguese. A tribute to Mozambican emancipation, where he advocates a return to the land, on a heady rumba / soukouss. No wonder when you know that his mother was Angolan! The Portuguese-speaking pole takes us to Cape Verde via Senegal with Mendes, child of the Medina, popular suburb of Dakar, former member of the Cabo Verde Show combo, immensely popular here. We then take the big leap to Cameroon, with funky Bikutsi and Asiko frenzied where the bass is unleashed on tribal rhythms to die for. We conclude with a jump to Ghana, the vocal harmonies of Thomas Frimpong and the guitars of Eric Agyemang bewitch this highlife highclass.

It is a one-hour tribute that we offer you here, after having carefully chosen "off-track" titles by artists known for other styles. It shows how African musicians interprets the Jamaican riddims but also how motherland rhythms influenced these descendants of slaves deported to the West Indies.

Some say that Cuban music traveled in the trunks of sailors, from the Caribbean to the African coasts... others say that it was the students of socialist regimes who went to study in Cuba who popularized these rhythms which became emblematic of an era where anticolonialism and the struggles for independence spread across Africa. It was natural that these rhythms which had traveled in the halls of slave ships, had been enriched by contact with European mazurkas, American jazz and Spanish boleros, returned home, to mother earth. We celebrate them in this mix which shows the incredible richness of the Afro-Latino-Cuban repertoire: Senegalese psychedelic guajiras and cha-cha, Malian rumba, Burkinabé patchanga, Cameroonian boogaloo, Beninese son and Congolese salsa. First copied, then reinvented by brilliant musicians who incorporated local rhythms, they gain a great popularity in clubs, « maquis » and « bal poussière » in capitals and villages.

"Tristeza Tropical" Analog Dakar Club for Radio Alhara 08.06.24

'Bori-Bana" wich means in mandinka "stop running or the race is over"  is a focus on Guinean artists from the 1970's. Mostly on the Syliphone label, devoted to  instil a sense of national identity by reigniting the arts and cultural practices of Guinea by president Ahmed Sékou Touré. To fulfilling these aims was the government's cultural policy of authenticité, which saw the creation of a network of arts troupes across the nation. Guinean musicians were encouraged to create modern versions of the traditional songs of their respective regions and the authenticité policy produced many outstanding recordings. Formed in 1967, the Syliphone label became the central distributor of Guinean music. I didn't resist to the pleasure of playing the full A side of Bembeya Jazz National "Regards sur le passé" who tells the story of the great Almamy Samoury Touré, the last emperor of the Wassoulou.

Founded by TANGAL Beatz, member of Analog Dakar Club, Afrika Cassette Club is a collective dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Africa's analog heritage through the medium of cassettes. For decades, cassettes have played a vital role in the dissemination of music on the African continent, serving as a means of communication and artistic expression for many generations. This medium has allowed the transmission of local musical styles and has fostered the emergence of various cultural scenes. This collective positions itself not only as a guardian of the past, but also as an actor of the present, where analog meets digital to enrich the African music scene.

Bercé par la culture antillaise et le Hip-Hop, Mexe découvre les sonorités lusophones en 2012 et tombe dans la marmite immédiatement. Son goût s’affute vers les racines des mouvements actuels (1980-2000) notamment après son premier voyage au Portugal en 2013.
La musique n’est pas un simple ensemble d’éléments sonores et rythmiques. C’est aussi une histoire culturelle à laquelle Mexe accorde une grande importance.
Il participe à l’essor culturel de ses racines en rassemblant dans ses mixes les musiques lusophones (kizomba, semba, coladera, funana…) et les musiques afro-caribéennes (zouk, cadence, soukous, rumba…).
Capable d’animer des soirées zouk & kizomba, Mexe ambiance également les dancefloors contemporains avec des sets disco-tropical.

Super Mama Djombo, a banda-sonora da Guiné-Bissau
This mix, inspired by the book "Les Grands" by Sylvain Prudhomme, is a tribute to the legendary Guissau-Binéen group "Super Mama Djombo". The book tells, during a day when the group reforms, the story of its founding members through their past greatness, betrayed dreams and a good dose of revolutionary saudade... served by a relentless groove.

I have grouped together tracks from their legendary albums that were all recorded during the same session, a crazy thing. Some are very rare to find and I was lucky to have them all in my hands, some are mine, others belong to our old friend and digger Erwann Le Vigoureux who deserves a Big Up. There are also tracks by José Carlos Schwarz and his Cobiana Jazz, their political and musical mentor and some references to Amilcar Cabral, the father of Guiné-Bissau independence.

Heading to Cameroon engulfs us in the heart of the Bantu tropical forests, where the bass of Aladji Touré sets the tempo for the heartless minstrels Moni Bile. Xalam and the great You close the dusty ballroom, we fly away to the landlocked and secret Mandingo lands, with a last tribute to Madiba.
