Have you noticed that in most albums of African music from the 70s/80s there is a reggae track? Groups not known for this style but who have all tried to resume, with more or less success, this tropical music from the so-called third world. Reggae, like rap, has its roots in African music, and the blues of black people. It is a one-hour tribute that we offer you here, after having carefully chosen "off-track" titles by artists known for other styles. It shows how African musicians interprets the Jamaican riddims but also how motherland rhythms influenced these descendants of slaves deported to the West Indies.

Travelling Vol.1

TRUTH IS THE KEY - Travelling vol.1

1. Moussa Thiobely Ba is part of a big griot family and is a young man of 25 years old. His 1 year old baby hangs on his back and a cigarette hangs from his mouth as he improvises on his electric guitar in front of a small modest room that he have built in the complex of all the griot houses. 
2. "Generation Mbamba", a family of griots band.
3. Tidiane Thiam plays Dannibe (released originally on Sahel Sounds records).
4. We are shielding from the midday sun in a room that is used as a Taylor’s workshop in the village while waiting for the lunch to be ready. Moussa starts to sing.
5. Baye Fall called Lamp sings a praise for Mame Diarra, Sufi Saint Amadou Bamba’s mother. 
6. In between the rainy days, we take out some rugs and some instruments to the green outside the village. Fouta is normally a burn out desert, but rain has brought in all this vegetation. All cousins take turns to play their songs while I record in front of them. This one is by Moussa Thiobely Ba.
7. Samba is a young griot, a cousin of Mousssa. He makes a living playing his electric guitar and singing praisals when people hire him to come over. He always records his performance on his phone and after sends it to me via Whatsapp, so that when I am back in London, a little piece of Fouta Toro is always with me.
8. We are shielding from the midday sun in a room that is used as a Taylors workshop in the village while waiting for the lunch to be ready. Moussa starts to sing a cover of a song I am still yet to find. He begins softly, just as something to do during a calm moment but it turns out to be powerful as everyone joins it a bit. I came to the village to meet Samba & Alessane, Moussa was their cousin, but after this performance I realised that Moussa was an incredible singer too.
9. Baye Fall called Lamp sings a praise for Mame Diarra, Sufi Saint Amadou Bamba’s mother. Lamp is a kind and generous man with an impressive set of dreadlocks who let us put up our tents in his family house yard in a small town of Casamance.
10. Samba sings while his father, a famous griot in the area plays Houddu, the traditional instrument made of carved wood & animal skin and three strings. We just had breakfast and I was getting ready to leave the village slightly nostalgic and saddened to leave. The song brightens the mood.
11. A first call to prayer at dawn in Maata-Moulaana, a semi-autonomous village following Sufi Islamic order. 
12. Laye sings a devotional Baye Fall song by the fire in the evening inside my friend Amdy’s workshop and a place where Baye Falls of the village gather.
13. Bamba Tokara Bamba from ‘Generation Mbamba’ - a griot family band sings his song about a Sufi Saint Amadou Bamba.
14. Hamet Thiobely Ba.
15. Devotional chant is blasting through the distorted speaker.
16. Samba Thiobely Ba.
17. The beginning verse of Dahim's favourite traditional track.
18. Me and Dahim listen to an old Mauritanian track, Dahim is talking me through it.
19. Samba Ba plays the traditional Fulani instrument Hoddu and Alessane reads a praisal from a poetry book by Mamadou Samba Diop. 
20. Moussa and Lamp sing a devotional song while sharing a spliff. 
21. A Fulani griot of Ado village, named Abdurahman Diallo, plays me a traditional riff while he shares some insights on life while playing the Hoddu. He says “life is like a film, everyone has got their role to play”…

What better way to celebrate summertime than with a mix of French West Indies music? Far from the clichés of festive, good-natured music, we have chosen to showcase the variety that these Creole islands (Martinique, Guadeloupe, and Haiti) have to offer. This includes feminist anthems, songs of resistance to colonial oppression, calls for local consumption, and awareness of a Caribbean culture that is mixed-race and anti-globalization. There will be traditional biguines, bèlè, gwo ka, and cadences blending with reggae, rock, latin and fusion influences. This non-exhaustive selection highlights the cultural richness of this sixth continent.

Joren "L'objectif final, c'est de connecter"
Un profil un peu différent pour cet épisode. Joren, avant de développer ses soirées RPBLK et de préparer ses sorties à venir en studio, avait un pied en cuisine et un pied en club. Résident au Djoon depuis son ouverture, il a chauffé les braises pour pas mal de grosses pointures US. Passionné de musique, il nous ouvre sa collection et ses souvenirs.
Joren "The final goal is to connect".
A different kind of profile in this episode. Joren, before hosting his RPBLK parties and cooking productions in his studio, had a foot in the kitchen and the other in clubs. Resident for Djoon since the opening, he set the stage for serious US Dj’s. Fond of music, he opens his records collection for us and shares memories.

Kiswell [Je voulais être chercheur en biologie marine étant jeune, j’ai appliqué la rigueur scientifique au disque].
Ce soir, nous partons autour du Monde avec un trouveur de disques : Victor Kiswell.
Biberonné au Funk, à la Soul, au Reggae, à Gainsbourg, à Brigitte Fontaine... au Classique, il a vite pris son envol en étant vendeur Chez Youri, puis curateur de compilations, mais aussi présentateur télé avec « Vinyl Bazaar » dans plusieurs pays.
En effet, sillonner le monde lui a permis d’écumer bien des lieux où les disques n’attendaient que son oeil affûté pour arriver jusqu’à nous, mais surtout pour jouer cette musique obscure et étonnante qui le caractérise.
Parlant plusieurs langues, en en déchiffrant quelques autres, passionné de sciences, de géographie, d’histoire; ces savoirs lui ont permis de suivre la trace de ses trouvailles.
Jamais assez de musique dans la vie ce fou d’art en tous genres.

Tonite, let’s fly around the World with a record finder : Victor Kiswell. He grew up bred with Funk, Reggae, Gainsbourg, Brigitte Fontaine... Classical music too, he quickly found his way to his own music being a seller at Chez Youri’s record shop in Paris, he curated a few collectible compilations, he even had his own tv show « Vinyl
Bazaar » in a few countries.
Travelling the world led him to many lost places filled with records waiting for an eye contact with him and play us those obscure and astonishing records.
Fond of sciences, geography, history, he talks a few languages and describes a few more, these knowledges led him to find them.
Too much is never enough when it comes to music for this « art- head » in many ways.
