2+1 is a marimba duet composed in the spring of 2013. It is scored for two players to perform on one marimba.There are many percussionists around the world who only have access to one marimba (like me!). I decided to write a piece that would allow two performers to play a duet utilizing only one marimba. 

While 2+1 simplifies instrument needs, it creates a challenging experience for the two performers, who have to maneuver around the instrument without getting in each other’s way. In addition, the piece is written so that the players face each other while performing, meaning one of the players performs on the opposite side of the instrument.

At the time I composed the piece, I was listening to Bon Iver’s self titled 
release. The rhythmic language in 2+1 is different from the band’s album, but the harmonic language shares similar qualities.

The piece is dedicated to my sweet wife Amanda. We recently rescued a puppy named Sadie, the first “addition” to our family; hence the name 2+1.

The instruments were carefully chosen to best emulate specific orchestral sounds from Claude Debussy's arrangement of this timeless piano solo. For example, chimes are used to create the sound of the bell-tone technique played by the french horns in Debussy's arrangement. A more obvious example is how timpani played specifically with a soft mallet is used to emulate the double bass.

To minimize the size of the ensemble, some players have one or two extra instruments. The timpanist for example will play suspended cymbal at times. Also, both auxiliary parts have multiple instruments. This could be an ideal first guide for handling such a part. A group of eight dedicated percussionists will find a true and felt connection to legitimate classical music.

This piece is written for two Vibraphones (3-octave and 4-octave), Glockenspiel, Chimes, Xylophone, two 4.3-octave Marimbas, Timpani, 6in Triangle, Wind Chimes, Concert Bass Drum, two Suspended Cymbals. An alternate 3-octave Vibraphone part is included to substitute ensembles with no access to a 4-octave instrument. This is reflected in the included alternate score.

Six Marimbas - Steve Reich

Six Marimba's by Steve Reich. 

Performed by the Percussionists of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.

Written for nine players, Katraterra is a concert piece which uses a variety of textures, instruments, and techniques to create a driving and intense feel. The 5/8 time signature dominates the groove of Katraterra with three emphasized beats of 1, 3, and the upbeat of 4, creating the motive which drives the 16-note based ostinato and all surrounding melodies. This weaves in and out of other time signatures, but is intended to happen smoothly without obvious perception to when these changes occur. This, along with the inherent syncopations throughout, creates a challenging ensemble atmosphere. With driving solo statements, complex interwoven rhythms, and an organic ostinato to drive it, this piece is sure to offer an intense and entertaining musical experience.

Katraterra (Jim Casella)

This short medley contains themes from "Letter From Home" and "First Circle" by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays. It contains beautiful harmonies and interplay between all players of the ensemble. While the complex meter changes may supply an initial challenge to performers, the end result is a seamless thread of beautiful music with a subtle underlying groove.

This collection was first performed by the Santa Clara Vanguard Percussion Ensemble and was choreographed by George Staib.

Metheny Dream (Jim Ancona)

Written for the Phantom Regiment percussion ensemble, Rochambeaux was awarded first prize in the 2001 DCI percussion ensemble competition. The dominating 7/8 feel, flashy keyboard runs, and ethnic modalities drive the three distinct sections of this groove-based work.

As an option, an 11th player may be added as a featured marimba soloist. There is a separate part for this optional soloist which can be featured over an elongated treatment of the slower, middle phrase. Other solos may be traded among some (or all) other performers during the 6/8 African section ensuring that no two performances of this piece will ever be the same. Certain to garner audience appeal!

The Drummers of Burundi - Extract (Real World Gold)

The Cavaliers, affectionately known as the Green Machine, have been dishing out some of drum corps finest percussion programs for decades. This book contains some of the technical exercises and musical excerpts that make the gears turn for one of the worlds top marching percussion programs.

Green Beats 2009 is the latest technique book compiled by the Cavaliers percussion staff which includes a full collection of technical exercises and musical excerpts for all battery sections (snares, tenors, bass) as well as the front ensemble. Exercises are written in score form and contain written guidelines from Cavaliers staff members on how to approach the musical concepts involved. Technical guidelines pertaining to grip, stroke, playing positions, etc., include pictures and details to consider when learning the Cavaliers percussion approach.

Steve Reich - Nagoya Marimba (HNNY Edit)

Caves, mountains, and canyons. These are three typical favorite landscapes one would like to spend the day hiking. Let this solo guide you through the three of them. Soft mallet rolls open the piece and welcome the listener to the first part of the trail. The music develops and builds throughout the second movement. And a Reggae "chucking" style third movement finishes it out. The player will be challenged by out-of-this-world interval changes and independence. Trust me, the piece will be as fun to play and see as it is to hear! 

This solo is written on a grand staff for 4-mallets. Both the original 5-Octave version and a 4.3-Octave version are included.

Even though natural disasters are part of life and have challenged humans ever since they existed, experiencing one changes someone forever. Four different choir-like voices sing various chord progressions with 2-mallet marimba rolls. The music attempts to portray the feelings of those who have lost loved ones due to natural disasters.
