“My work is heavily inspired by field recordings I have taken whilst travelling,” Adam McCoy told Myles Mac earlier this year. It’s a statement that could easily be attributed to any artist on Analogue Attic—a label pushing the boundaries of music’s ability to evoke a very specific sense of place and time—but it feels particularly apt when listening to ‘Northern Angelique’, the opening track from Citizen Maze’s forthcoming record of the same name. 

Before completely enveloping you with unfathomably deep drum sounds and pulsing synths, we hear the quotidian call of a flight announcement; more specifically, a flight from Sydney to Uluru. This bit of ephemera may be fleeting, but like the other field recordings peppered throughout ‘Northern Angelique’, it’s absolutely essential—a declaration to both the passengers and the listener of the journey ahead.

Similar to 2018’s locally lauded Serenity in the Woods, the production on Northern Angelique is as inventive and immersive as ever, but what separates this record from the last is that McCoy is more openly embracing the expansive style of electronic music he first explored on Serenity. From the boomy bass throb to the layers of synths and effects that keep the track in constant flux, ‘Northern Angelique’ is as huge as anything he's ever made. It’s very similar in spirit to the live mix he recorded for Mac’s Melbourne Deepcast. Like that mesmerising set, this is music befitting the vast, open spaces of the track’s imagined destination, one that’s bound to soundtrack outdoor festivals like Inner Varnika and Hopkins Creek in the not too distant future. Until those days return though, McCoy makes it very easy to just enjoy the journey.

Floating around the ether of the world is an old proverb that states, “Good things always come in pairs”. For today’s premiere, we here at Delayed are inclined to agree with that sentiment as another Aussie based artist is taking a stand alongside Alex Albrecht, and Sean La'Brooy on their Analogue Attic imprint to be the metaphorical yin to their yang.

Melbourne based Citizen Maze and his mixes have been on repeat around the Delayed HQ for some time. They are phenomenal stories that dive deep into and through the proverbial musical waters. Taking listeners through a variety of textures, sounds and feelings while providing an overall emphasis on detail. Unsurprising to none, these characteristics are carried over into his live sets and production, the latter of which is why we are here today. ‘Race to the Falls’, off the forthcoming ‘Northern Angelique’ EP, is full to the brim with musical elements, each with their little quirks that lend such a personality to this track and in turn, the EP. So many little things to notice each time you listen, picking out a new voice every time.
