Mark Farina

シカゴ出身、サンフランシスコを拠点に活躍中のアーティスト。90年代初頭からDJとして世界中をまわり、年間100本以上ものギグでプレイ。跳ねる様な音色のトラックを超人的かつ卓越したスキルとセンスでミックスするDJスタイルにより、北米はもとより世界中からファンを獲得、西海岸のシーンを代表するトップ・アーティストとして君臨し続けている。日本では2006年に野外フェスティヴァルMetamorphoseにヘッドライナーとして登場。2つのステージにて異なるコンセプトでDJをおこない、多くの観衆を魅了した。翌年の2007年には、今は無き伝説のクラブSpace Lab Yellowの単独公演と共に、Liquidroomでのom:tokyoでもプレイ。その内容を収録したミックスCD『Live in Tokyo』をリリースし、大きな話題を呼んだ。2008年には世界的に最も評価を受けているミックスCD『Fabric』の40番を担当した。イギリスが誇る名門クラブでの架空の一夜をコンパイルした内容を抜群の選曲と類まれなグルーヴで表現し、更に多くの支持を集めることになった。近年は同郷でもあるDerrick Carter、DJ Sneakと活動を共にしており、ベルギーで開催されている世界最大級のダンスミュージック・フェスティヴァルTomorrowlandにて、3人によるバック・トゥ・バック・トゥ・バックを2012年から披露している。この特別なパフォーマンスはイビザが最も盛り上がるサマー・シーズンのPachaでもおこなわれている。また1992年からスタートした自身のパーティーMushroom Jazzは、ジャジーなヒップホップからダビーなダウンテンポ・トラックを中心に構成され、同名のミックスCDとして現在まで7作品を発表する人気シリーズとなっている。ある意味、対極ともいえる二面性を表現し続けられるのも、幅広い音楽性を持つMark Farinaならではのスタイルといえるだろう。

-このミックスのコンセプトを教えて下さい。

これはロンドンのクラブBasing Houseでプレイした時のライヴ・ミックスだ。
300人規模の箱だったけど、素晴らしいFunktion-Oneのサウンドシステムが設備されていたよ。
ここでは1人のDJが一晩中プレイするというスタイルでパーティをおこなっているんだ。
このミックスは早い時間にプレイしていたMushroom Jazzのセットだね。
オープンから沢山のお客さんが踊りに来てくれて、楽しかったことを覚えているよ。

Solid Steel in association with Serato (20th November)In Hour 2 we welcome Session Victim to Solid Steel. The German House duo have released two albums so far on Delusions of Grandeur and a whole host of singles and remixes, with their last EP coming out on Retreat in September and a track is featured in the mix. We also hear a fine selection of music from Mark Hand, Skylevel, Romare, Henry Wu and The Dark. They told us; 
"We have been fans of Ninja Tune forever and of the Solid Steel radio shows for many years, so it's a huge honour for us being asked to provide an episode ourselves.  The mix has been recorded with a mixer and two 1210s, like all our mixes to date. Our intention was to put together music that you want to listen to at home or in your car rather than something you would freak out to at a party." www.sessionvictim.de

Solid Steel Radio Show 20/11/2015 Hour 2 - Session Victim

Going through some of our old external harddisks dug up in our studio basement annex wine cellar we came across this almost a decade (!) old Kraak & Smaak mixtape, inspired by the likes of Madlib and J Dilla. 
A blend of weird samples, lost and found grooves, it also features long lost Plastic People album demo’s – some of which made it on there eventually (spot ‘m if you can!) and some, well, didn’t.

Remembering the fact that we had good fun making this but never really did anything public with it, we thought it would be cool to share this with you after almost 10 years later after all.

So enjoy and be sure and listen from the top for maximum pleasure!
