Made a mix to accompany the "Quest for Details" release. Canadian country, Polish electroacoustic, a field recording of me sitting in a cabin, dearly departed Sakamoto, singer-songwriters, some questionably annoying 90s techno, and others are littered throughout this mix. Think it has a melancholic but hopeful vibe. Hopefully there’s room for more content.

Statistically, like most content (or our output), this will be mostly clicked through and skipped - with a small percentage of people who actually listen to it. It will reach more people than if I made a mix tape that I sent to a few friends but arguably will not be listened to as much. Something like 50% of music on Spotify is skipped before it ends (a lot of which happens in the first few seconds), a number that’s estimated to be much higher for independent artists, and certainly (maybe understandably) even higher for experimental and niche sound. Moving forward, it’s important to criticize what the corporate centralization of everything we make and absorb is doing to culture at large. People are aware but want to avoid the cognitive dissonance of hypocrisy. Under American individualism, we’re expected to align our thoughts and practices. In a world in which you don’t have much control, it’s okay to be a hypocrite. It’s more productive to talk shit about things being horrible than to fall for hypocrisy bait and disengage.

In the 80s, a lot of 30/40 somethings creative / “open-minded” people sat back as Reaganomics paved the way for this demonic stage of tech Neo-liberalism we’re entering. I think it’s probably a good time in history to acknowledge what the lack of regulation and data centralization is doing to our cognition and the way we interface with information and content. It’s objectively not offering a better experience and is subverting the way in which we are intentional. I will be taking all A_A off the big streaming services and am reconsidering using Bandcamp. If you know me, you've heard me rant about BC, even before it was owned by a large video game corporation that is union busting. It was inevitably going to be sold because of its increasing intrinsic value. These issues aside, it's a well developed platform. The problem is the platform needing to exist itself. My annoying tirade now over with, I hope you enjoy the mix.
